Might have worked out OK, if they had managed to drop the lid on the pot after putting the turkey in. By starving the fire of oxygen, it would've simply gone out. But with a flare-up that big, you probably would've needed an asbestos suit to even get close enough to it.

@logik316 chances are there wont be enough time to cover it and also there is the fact that the turkey, if not thawed, it much cooler and the temperature difference it self could cause explosive circumstances.

Yeah, I was also thinking the boil-over might likely just shoot the lid off. But I wonder whether putting a frozen turkey into boiling oil causes the explosion because of the temperature difference, or only because frozen turkeys tend to be covered in ice frost and water condensation? Maybe if you partially thaw the turkey and pat it down with a towel just so the skin surface is dry, it would be OK?
