Considering her age, I think the issue is more about the parents of the 17 year old and the educational system in the area, not the mother or even father. Clearly the 17 year old felt that she would have been stuck trying to take care of a kid she couldn't afford. That's hardly an excuse to attempt to kill the baby, but if put in her position, it's difficult to say she is entirely in the wrong.
She was looking out for her own future.... it was a good intent, but was far too late....
