This phenomenon occurs (an ant mill) during migration of a colony when the main body of ants loses the pheromone (homrone) trail produced by the 'leader' ants. They then start following each other and can form a circle in which each ant follows the ones in front endlessly. This can result in the death of the colony.
i feel like this is a perfect metaphor for life. Constantly walking around in a circle following the rest of ur people......wishing to be able to just break from the crowd to do something different..before you get stuck and die before you find ur real home....dam if one ant could just leave the rest would follow.....*single tear*
um, thanks, i just quoted a website, because someone wanted to know what this is about, and I thought they might be interested. Dont worry people like you remind me why it's better not to spend any time on the internet.
Don't excuse yourself to people like firewake who are offensive for no blody reason. He is just angry because he was not the first to share the information. No joke.
I on the other hand thank you for enlightening me and sparing me the time to look for the information.
So with all this said, I hope people like me will remind of the opposite, that information sharing is what made the human species evolve.
altish you are an idiot! i hate when people act like they know what their talking about. please if you dont know what what you're talking about you just make yourself look even dumber for saying it. and believe me you look pretty stupid.
@altish Thats true, but only in smaller numbers. This colony as a whole is doing this... Ants are very sensitive to the frequency of the Earth... I believe this has something to do with the frequency changing...
The "never ending circle" theory makes sense to me. Ants follow each others chemical trails and if enough of them left strong signals in a circular pattern then they could potentially create a perpectual loop. Perhaps they were hunting a bug that instictively continued to veer off at a 45 degree angle to the chasing horde.
"Sometimes ants following the scent of other ants get locked in a never ending circle called a circular mill. The circle of ants, each one following the ant in front, may continue until they all die." A bit like lemmings I suppose? If I saw that in my backyard though I would still just assume the world is ending, despite what the internet might say.
@altish you sound like an idiot. you have no idea what you're talking about do you? please in the future just keep your mouth shut because you just made yourself sound dumber than are, and by the looks of things you're pretty dumb.
I've seen single ants run in a circle, but that's when they are ill or in some way a danger to the colony. They run in a circle until they exhaust themselves to death, but thousands of ants doing the same thing... no idea. Google doesn't help me either!
@ffaall The ants leave a trace while they work, so the other ants can follow a singular path. It works like a fluorescent light for them, but we can't see it with bare eyes. So probably in this video, some ant screwed up and made a circular path that the others started following making this never ending spiral.
i thought it was a black hole
