  • so beautiful it hurts...thanks lads.

  • Experts on the Moody Blues Facebook group tell me that this music is the two backing tracks created by Tony Clarke for the quad mixes done in the 70s. And Mike is playing a Chamberlin on this, they say.

  • Ah ha! Here is undisputable proof that the Moodies music could be re-released as instrumentals...and still be totally amazing. I know I would re-purchase each and every album if they were re-released in instrumental version....like this song. I LIKE IT...LOTS!

  • Very definitely the instrumental backdrop of "The Land of Make Believe". Smuugled out of the studio somehow?

  • This is very unique. I'm hearing a couple of songs in this, like "Living In A Land Of Make beleive" and "Who Are You Now",or am I way off. What is this. I don't know, but this is great. Thank you for posting. justinh

  • @yoga628rusk839

think you're right about the land of make believe, haven' t figured out the rest.. gonna have to put into my fav list and check it out later. probably not anyway to determine what time frame it was made.

  • The Moody Blues, the Sistine Chapel of rock.

  • Sounds like it's from "Octave." But I haven't listened to it for a while, so just a hunch.

  • @Wazabooz Land of make believe was on seventh sojourn then they broke up then octave then mike quit

  • This is a simply beautiful instrumental moment in the massive MB's history.

  • I heard this version of 'Land of Make Believe' somewhere else, a few years ago. Think it was on the radio. One of my favorite M.B.'s songs. So spiritually uplifting

  • This is the quad mix without the two front channels. Mike is playing a Chamberlin.

  • This is the quad mix without the two front channels.

  • Sounds like they recorded Land of Make Believe in stereo and played it in mono - without the vocal track.

  • great piece, thanks - great to hear another dimension of this glorious song!

  • sorta sounds like background expanded land of make believe... I agree with that stereo split thing.

    It's definitly 7th Sojurn

  • sorta sounds like background expanded land of make believe...

  • Sounds like "We're Living in a Land of Make Believe.."

  • This is the backing track to "Land of Make Believe" from Seventh Sojourn, 1972. Great to hear. On the SACD reissue of the album, they included the backing track of "You and I"

which I love, and this is a real treat to hear.

  • It's a stereo split of "The Land of Make Believe" originated as a 4-channel quadrophonic recording of 7th Sojourn released for playing on a quad 8 tape player- as 2- 4 track quad programs. A stereo 8 track tape has 4-- 2 track stereo programs You can play the quad 8 tape on stereo 8 player & get 4 programs. All songs had 2 programs of forward & rear stereo paired tracks. The other program pair contains vocals & instruments. I own quad 8s of Days, Question of B , EGBDF, & 7th Sojourn

  • Have to wonder how many MB songs would be equally this interesting if run through de-vocalizing software. I hear a hint of vocals? This may be a concert backing track?

  • Taranberk, where did you find this?

  • @DieselProductions11 it's a mystery - it turned up on a cassette years ago and I have no idea what the origin is.

  • @Taranberk Where did you get the cassette?

  • @DieselProductions11 This came from someone I used to write to about 25 years ago who got it from someone else. Sorry, but the trail is cold - no way for me to track it down. I never knew the original source.

  • I'm living in a land of make believe. What a wonderful song.

    Often I wish I were.

  • I believe the instrumental is living in a land of make believe

  • Living in a Land of Make Believe...

  • land of make believe???? instrumental version?

  • not just an instrumental version - there's no bass or drums or lead guitar in the mix...weird......

  • Ryan, is that you?

  • where's the mystery ? .. just Land of Make Believe guitar and mellotron tracks with everything else removed

  • It is the instrumental of Land of Make Believe!!!!

  • When I was 14, ( 1972 ) the year Seventh Sojourn' came out ( this release ), I used to Iisten to it tover and over ,and song ' Land of make believe ' over and over, so I still know the words by heart and can sing words to this cut that is without all the words ! I like Seventh Sojourn better than Nights inWhite Satin, Awesome - David

  • Suprised that I knew all the words and did a bit of YouTube karaoke! Thanks for posting such great stuff!

  • Wow, this is so cool. My band does a couple of Moodies songs, and it's great to hear the basic tracks of this great song!

  • WAY COOL ! - Love it - Thanks!

  • Remarkable!!!

  • Very nice, Love these photos ! 1992, Geez, i missed this one! They came to Anaheim in 93, on a circular Stage and it rotated very slowly, we have front row seats, That was a nice concert; This video is wonderfule Thanks! :)

  • Land of Make Believe, instrumental version...any LIFE LONG Moodies fan would know it with the first three notes! Thanks for posting!!!!!

  • Wow!!!

  • Insanely great--hard to believe it's 40 years old! Land of Make believe without vocals---beautiful--unbelievably pure, haunting mellotron! Terrific Justin Acoustical guitar!

  • Taranberk.. i have loved all your Moodys postings!! Thank you!! And the choreography of the pics with the music are perfect!! Fun, moving, haunting, a mosaic of emotions!

  • lol what are you thinking about mystery song??? land of make believe ring a bell?

  • Well if you follow the post of this to now, you will see that the poster KNOWS the song this is from.. the mystery is.. where did the instrument only version originate from... hehe

  • Question to Sutterjack:

Where did you hear instrumentals of "Visions of Paradise", "Lost...", etc.?

I can't seem to find them on YouTube...

    Thanks.

  • It's The Land Of Make Believe!

  • just superb !sounds like the basic track is this a twelve string guitar ?Where did you find this ..!God love Mike's Mellotron !Moodies Rule

  • Beautiful rendering of "Land of Make Believe" without vocals--really lets you hear the guitar and mellotron-- Just like some of the new instrumental releases of "Visions of Paradise" "Lost in a Lost World" and "You and Me"

  • Interesting fun...

  • i love this rendition

  • very interesting mix as soon as you recognise a track it moves on.....fantastic thanks

  • Thanks for posting..very nice instrumental take on this song.

Real possibilities here...like to here more like this.

  • A rendition of Land of make believe

  • New Horizons indeed.

  • Don't get me started. The R&R Hall and Wenner got to get their heads out of their ....This band broke new ground along with Pink and Yes and R&R has never been the same. Seminal work...Days of Future Past, Dark Side, and Close to Edge surpassed all old R&R and broke new ground. Moodies opened the door to classically trained geniuses to play R&R - art, prog and new age evolved from these guys...powerful people push their narrow view but this more powerful music will win in the end. - Sam Utah

  • I completely agree and wrote a letter to the R&R HOF a year or two ago, and got a BS reply, that was just a blah, blah, blah, yadda, yadda, yadda response. They suck.

  • @dgk1968

There are a couple of sites to vote: Future Rock Hall and Rateitall. It can't hurt eh?

  • If you like rarities and want to discover more gems like this, check out my new bulletin board--click on "more info" about this video, upper right.

  • So sorry to hear that Ray retired. What a talent and he'll be missed. This song is stupendous. They have to the best ever group to inspire our imaginations! They been my artist favorites since 1967. Has it really be that long?

  • It's an instrumental version of "Land of Make Believe."

  • I agree with jerry1736--maybe one track of The Land of Make-Believe. It's definitely on Seventh Sojourn, if you want to check it out. frausrs (Sue), MB fan since HS (class of '68)

  • I think this is a musical track of "Living in a Land of Makr Believe". Beautifully done and lends itself to a 'karaoke' sing along for those so inclined.

  • I have been listening to the Moodies for about thirty-five years. they are one of the best bands ever and deserve to be in the rock and roll hall of fame. If you listen to there music you will see what I mean with the different types and various lyrics and subjects. one of the great band of all time.

  • I saw the Moodies in October. All songs written by Justin and John and they still left some of their best stuff out. Pinder and Thomas songs aren't even played. This is the most prolific songwriting band ever. They should be in the hall of fame. It is a disgrace that they are not.

  • Where did you see them? I have seen them an even 25 times now. The reason they aren't in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is because the Communist founder of Rolling Stone, Jan Wenner, who has great influence on who gets admitted, hates progressive rock. So you won't see Yes or Emerson, Lake and Palmer in there either. How can some of these brain dead simpleton acts get admitted when the high end prog rock bands are shelved year after year?

  • I have seen them all over the UK since 1979. I am even in the "Wildest Dreams" Video. they are great guys and incredibly underrated. But there are lots of real fans who appreciate their music. Thank God.

  • Your answer also explains the omission of Jethro Tull.

  • Can't forget Genesis and Peter Gabriel solo either. The music of musicians like the Moodies and the other art rock bands who dared to push the boundaries of rock and classical music will never be in the mainstream again, but their music will never die.

  • Who would like to support me to get The Moody Blues, i.c. Justin Hayward honoured by a NOBEL MUSIC PRIZE in 2009?? If support for my initiative is substantial, I'd like to spend quite some hours to realize that dream. I think they deserve such an honour because of their top class music for decades and more than one generation.

    Jan Goeijenbier (Rotterdam, Holland)

  • Ben jij Jan Goeijenbier uit Poeldijk?

  • Klopt!

  • Zoals gezegd, dat klopt. Gaat er een 54-jarige Poeldijker schuil achter sitting comfortably?

  • I think such an honour is long overdue

  • Why do you think?

    Jan

  • You're welcome. I have loved those two men (Dustin & John) since I was 16. I saw a video of them at that age and the talent gorgeous men HAD NO IDEA of their impact on our world's women. ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh. PERFECTION

  • Thanks Tarenberk for this video. Its their best looks isn't it!

  • gods gift to us!

  • You've hit the nail on the head.Spot on!

  • Whenever I fire up You Tube, this is always the very first video I watch. As a life-long Moodies fan, this is absolutely the most beautiful video there is of them, bar none

  • How nice to hear the rhythm parts to The Land of Make Believe. This shows that rhythm guitar can sound very beautiful on its own. Unfortunately, it is often underrated because many people focus instead on lead guitar(although I like lead too).

  • The song the way they performed it was beautiful....absolutely beautiful.

  • The Land of Make Believe (instrumental)- Seventh Sojourn

  • I have heard this before but can't remember where or what album.

  • this is truly remarkable i have never heard it before how did you come upon this recording? Its amazing and beautiful thank you so much for sharing i love the moodyblues music they really have something special the unique style and blend of there voices and instruments thanks thanks and double thanks

  • Video is great, but what got me here, Im sittin here listening to a 7`in reel to reel(tape) FULL of recordings of Moody Blues, I know nothing of them, but what ive heard sounds great.Their is a lot of musicals on the tape. Most of the songs ive never heard before, i believe from back in the 60`s. anybody that would like to mail me about it, just do my name here!!! @yahoo i`ll be glad to share.

  • im interested in maybe hearing some really old recordings or just talking send me a message sometime!

  • I had bought a reel to reel player from ebay, and the tape was included in the sale. I never knew who it was till i started looking on the net for the names of the songs which group it was.I`ll record them off to mp3 if you would like them , send me a email, be glad to share with ya.

  • ok job

  • ok job

  • To gaze at John is enough for me. Sigh.

  • Yes, it's the land of make-believe instrumental

  • All I heard was the first five seconds, and I already know. It's "The Land of Make-believe" from Seventh Sojourn.

  • wow, i don't recall this music. its great. makes me wanna trip out

  • The origin of this song is simple .. it's the rear channel of the surround mix .. vocals and drums/bass are in the front speakers. This has been captured apart from the rest of the mix. Very cool to hear it this way though!

  • Had this happen when speakers were "out of phase."(?) Could hear only instrumental and main vocal track...no back-up voices.

  • Mystery Song????? This is " The Land of Makebelive" as any good moody fan will tell you

  • exactly...and some medley improvisations thrown in

  • I adore Justin, and agree that all women would be hard pressed not to!!!

  • Valzoom, I have to agree with you. I belong to a message board dedicated to just Justin and indeed all of us there love Justin!!!

  • LOVE him??

  • ?

    Speak only for yourself

  • What's this all about? I put in stop moody blues and this video came up instead.Actually it was pretty good but I was looking fir their early 60's hit "Stop"

  • Being a huge moody fan, I really don't think they did a hit called 'stop'.

  • They had two songs that got a lot of air play on the radio in about '64. One, of course was "go now" The other was "stop"-not nearly as big a hit but it was played.Check out their first album "The Magnificent Moodies" (U.K.)release and find both songs.

  • maybe you should research some old moodies... there is/was a hit called stop... pre justin and john. or did you not know that they werent originals?

  • yah i actually have the album with that song its good the name of the album is true life story which is also a song its really bluesy i like it i didnt know at first untill i listened to it that justin and john were not with the blues its kind of funny that they joined the blues later on and led the band to greater heights and proportions

  • You are a very talented photographer, but you must know that already. Thanks for sharing.

  • (7/28/07) at The Saratoga Performing Arts Center. I too was there. They were Fantastic! I have seen them about 6 times over the years and they always give it their all, each and every time - like it was their first time. I adore Justin! Don't all women???

  • Berry-O-Baby-O-Mine, (or thine if Mr. Lodge is nearby)

I was noting that he was correct in his identification of these track partials. I went and listened and synced LP version of Land-O-Make believe up to this and it stuck. Still fascinated by how many lil partial hooks and bits of other Hayward works seem "almost recognizable" when "over listening" to these homeless melodies.

  • This is MOST amazing to hear. WOW! You did exactly what you set out to do and it is incredible.

  • I won tickets to the Moody Blues on a local radio station and saw them Saturday Night (7/28/07) at The Saratoga Performing Arts Center. The seats were magnificent...Front row and center. The show was phenomenal and they played great. What a great experience...I am so happy that I got to see them live and full of life! Also, thanks for the video...it was great.

  • And that "lush string arrangement" is Michael Pinder's Mellotron. God, how I miss him....he was the dark heart of the Moody Blues. They are still good, though.

  • Jake is right: The song is "Living in the Land of Make Believe" from "Seventh Soujourn". The vocals are left out. It's a GREAT song.

  • Where are the Words? This is a great instrumental, but I want to hear the words

  • The melodies of the Moody Blues brings the "secrets of our souls" into unspeakable view in the church of mind and heart.

A source of inspiration since my early youth. Upon first hearing Tuesday Afternoon,I was hooked. I indulged in philosophy and theology and made this my life. Thank you Moody Blues! You are good people as is your music.

  • living in a land of make believe

  • never heard it before but realy enjoyed it. Thank you

  • Can you hear a little premonition of a Justin solo tune.... "In my world, Heaven is near me when I'm close to you"....???

  • The Moody Blues are still a breath of fresh air to me!

  • DAMN EXCELLENT!! It's funny how certain parts of the music which were covered up by the vocals, came through in this mix. AWESOME!!

  • It took me about 5 seconds to figure this out. What an excellent thing to hear it in a different way. Thanks for posting!!!

  • Beautiful song and my all time favorite group.Long live The Moody Blues. Excellent!!!What a rich, lush string arrangment!A feast for the ears!!!Thanks for posting!!!

  • **** AWESOME *****************

  • Listening to this song in my convertible on a summer day... all is right with the world...

  • I sang along to this perfectly, I was suprised I still knew all the words. Land of Make Believe is a Moodies hidden jewel, can we all have the words on the video for a Kareoke session ?

  • It's two tracks of four - meaning it's from the old quadrophonic tracks of the early seventies. If you have any of those old albums try listening to only part of the recording and you'll hear this. At least that's what I was told, I never tried it myself, I don't have any of them! It's still an neat way to hear the music.

  • I just did and you are RIGHT ON IT!

  • This is quite nice, I have been a fan from the beginning...way back in 1966n 6th grade. They still make great music.

  • A lovely instrumental version of a lovely song. "Land of Make Believe" is such a great song with so many interesting little hooks and major/minor changes. I started to go to the Caesar's shows the following September - always had a great time there. Thanks for sharing this interesting version - too bad the Moodies have never released this themselves.

  • It is the back channels. Interesting to hear this on YT great video well done . Thanks.

  • What was so mysterious about that? It was clear to me from the first couple of notes, Land of Make Believe. Interesting to hear it instrumentally only.

Yes, Justin is a gorgeous blonde guitar god with the voice of an angel. Hottest 60-year old guy ever.

  • 60? Good gourd, I hope *I* look that good at 60. Not much hope of that... I'm a chubby brunette at 42. ;-)

  • Ah, yes..."The Land Of Make-Believe", from "Seventh Sojourn". Needs more Mellotron, IMHO, from Mike Pinder himself. But this is good enough. Good addition!

  • Great pictures! Great song! Thanks!

  • beautiful!! and now i want "for my lady"(the best song for sevent sojourn)instrumental, please

  • Suggest you put it out as a karaoke tune, its easy enough to sing along to!!!

  • so flyyyyyyyyyy up into the clear blue sky.... love's the only reason why....what a beautiful song from the 7th album...interesting hearing it this way! thks

  • Quad WAS surround, of course, and the DTS and SACD Moody releases all use the Quad masters. Someone simply recorded the rear Quad channels to stereo, as was stated earlier, though the version you have has obvious phase problems. I have SS & DOFP ripped directly from the DTS discs, and the sound is pristine.

  • Everyone, this was a very old recording (pre-surround sound stuff). My theory is that it actually came from the ORIGINAL QUAD! I have recordings of six of the first 7 albums, and Blue Jays, split up this way. I posted this hoping the "creator" of these recordings will trip across this one day and come forward!

  • I love the stuff that you have posted. Maybe Mike and the guys can put history behind them and do one more song.

  • taranberk,

This is pretty darn cool stuff...can you say how it is you found it - or how an average schmoe like me might get my own copies?

  • Oh come on folks, the name of the song wasn't the mystery, especially since Taranberk put the words "Make Believe" in the tags - it was the origin of the incomplete mix that was mysterious, and cheerfulhamster provided the correct answer.

  • This is that sound that they need to find again before they finally and at long last call it quits. What a heavenly sound from Mike Pinder's chamberlain. Keep up the good work. You should offer to produce just one song for them.

  • Its "land of makebelieve" from Seventh Sojourn, I think.

  • Rats!! I wanted to be the first one to recognize the song. Itsagrape is right: it's the backing tracks from Living in a Land of Make Believe from the 7th sojourn album, which I think is one of the best pop/rock albums of all time. Mike Pinder's Lost in a Lost World is the song that best describes the evil and horror of the present world, especially if you are living in the U.S.

  • this is "Land of Makebelieve" from the Moody's album the Seventh Sojourn. It's definitly one of my favorites. One of Hayward's best in my opinion.

  • Blond Guitar God!

  • Oh no, that's so true but it makes me think it was him that was being referred to in the e-mails going around at the time of the UK tour. Not nice.

  • Seven hours later and my comment still hasn't shown up (thanks YouTube), so I'll try again. The mystery song is just the isolated rear channels of the surround mix. Cool pictures by the way.

  • Isn't Justin the cutest guy ever?

  • Nice. But poor Ray. Oh well, at least it wasn't a dinosaur on stage.
