  • This isn't a song, its an advert for a UK celebrity lookalike company. Michael J Fox on vocals, Blue Peters- Peter Duncan on Drums and Peter Sutcliffe doing backing vocals!! Quality! love the song actually, nice solo.

  • All those school parties in the late 70's...

  • I bought one of those stupid padlocks that had the combination 5705 back in the '70s. I think we're both being had.

  • err didnt the guy with the beard in the superman shirt play with the massonettes with the song heart ache avenue ??? up the brummies lol

  • @zicoaka Yes, indeed, after City Boy broke up, Lol Mason had that hit song, surrounding himself with lovely city girls.

  • err or is it michael j fox ????

  • am i mistaken or does this chap resemble luke skywalker lol great song

  • na its luke skywalker i think

  • Wow...why this song came to mind I'll never know.

  • is that a very young nicole kidman?

  • Unmistakeable backing vocals of Mutt Lange. Great song. Whatever happened toCity Boy anyone?

  • Heard it yesterday on Steve Wright show, fabulous - they knew had to make em in those days. Rampage.

  • what a great hit good old 70s 1978 best time of my life high school basketball grease i wish i could go 33 years back

  • to all you fans of CITY BOY i need help!!!!!!! my dad was the drummer at some point of their career a MR Robert Neal, if you have any info on this it would be much appreciated.

  • why wasn't the real singer performing the track?

  • i saw them two times in karlstad........sweden

  • Great song , forgot about this one . Harmonies like sweet

  • Mike Slamer! One of the most underrated guitars on this planet!

  • Was this the single version? My US LP version of this song has some noticeable differences. A couple of missing string parts, and the guitar solo is an octave higher, Interesting to hear this - thanks for the post!

  • funny thing... It is the drummer doing the lead-vocals... Steve is just "going through the motions"

  • @quazar68 Just like me lip syncing along every time i play this!

  • City Boy hit #27 in Billboard, 10-14-78. God bless ya, for postin' it. Thanx!

  • FYI, the girl in the video is producer Mutt Lange's second wife, Olga!!

Yes, Steve Broughton WAS miming to drummer Roy Ward's lead vocal....Mutt thought that Roy's voice was a better match for the song....but as Steve was prettier than Roy the decision was made to make it look as if he was singing lead when doing TV appearances.

  • Am I the ONLY 12 year old hear that knows REAL music!?

  • ooooooooooooooo so good !!!!!! its only so coll 5705

  • Can't really compare them to Queen... more like John Miles?

I must have listened to it a lot - I can still remember the lyrics. It was probably one of the best on offer at the time.

  • Such a great song..Dinner at the Ritz a great album also..This is whats great about UTUBE for all old stuff like this..Chilly Chilly take a walk on the Water.

  • Fantastic song with a good guitar solo, (nice retro Yamaha SG2000)

  • Since Steve is a lot older tha Michael J it must rather be the other way around.

  • Ah..What a fantastic year 78 was with music like this, listening to this again take me back to the garage i worked in, if this song came on the radio in a car i was working on, i used to turn it up a bit. nearly flattened a few batteries doing this, but happy days indeed...thank you for posting spookylorre

  • Lol Mason of the Maisonettes on keyboards.

  • Wanker.

  • i went to school with roy ward's son( also called roy ward ) at bilton high , rugby . they lived in anson close & he had a silver trans-am . roy ward also is the real singer behind tight fit's the lion sleeps tonight !!

  • The guy on the keyboards is Lol Mason of the maisonnettes"Heartache avenue

  • @beanster64 sorrry but he looks nothing like Michael J Fox! Maybe its only myself who thinks that though....

  • Thanks: I vaguely remembered this song which was irritating, now I know how it goes!

  • Oh boy, this brings back memories. And the things your learn on You Tube. I've always thought they were a one hit wonder. Never knew till now they'd had other songs. Anyway, this was a cute one.

  • No wonder there's no reply. He only dialled 4 digits.

  • Oh wait your all wrong! It's the other way around, Marty Mcfly looks like this dude not the otherway around.. Think about it.. This is 1978 and Marty Mcfly was created 1985!

  • This is a classic besides he looks like marty mcfly from back to the future

  • This is a classic

  • I remember this from my teenage schooldays at the Discos, this and Andrew Gold "Never Let Her Slip Away" The stuff those dreams are made of, love it!!! Thanks for posting this MAGIC!!!

  • still have this 45-Rock On!!!!!!

  • I live in the house where city boy used to live.......:-)

  • spookylorre, you forgot comparisons to ELO too.

This video shows Steve Broughton Lunt lip syncing lead vocals. I don't think he sang lead on this track though, right?

One of my favourite songs of the late 70's.

  • @collinsjamesl

Correct. Drummer Roy Ward actualy sang this one.

  • Peter Sutcliff on the keyboards 'Broadmore 5705...'

  • @pinkandjefflynne Actually, the keyboard player became a maths teacher after the band split up, and taught me for 2 years :~)

  • 1 hit wonder. HIt #27 in the US (Billboard). How'd it do in the UK? God bless!

  • @DaveWollenberg I could be wrong, but I heard 5705 went Top 10 in the UK.

Why 5705 wasn't a worldwide hit, I'll never understand. City Boy is one of the most underrated bands in the world. Have you heard any of their tracks from "The Day The Earth Caught Fire," "Dinner At The Ritz," Young Man Gone West" or the rest of "Book Early?" Do yourself a favour, check out the rest of their material. It's pure ear candy.

Robert "Mutt" Lange produced much of their materail.

    Enjoy!

  • @collinsjamesl I bought the "Book Early" album back in fall '78 here in Canada due to this great song..To me it was top 5 material, no doubt...still love it.

  • @dorn2100 Yes, I never get tired of City Boy's music

  • Beanster, you're probably the only person aside from myself who has noticed that resemblance.

  • phones ( cell ) don't even ring 5 times anymore ...but I still like the song....did we really think those clothes where cool??

  • Classic!

    ..

  • zaniac100 I stil got my records to, since the 70's play, I play them once in awhile, dont wanna warn them out.

andyveccyv6 He is a dead ringer of micheal J fox

  • Got the original 45 single somewhere, can't be many left now!

  • the lead singers a dead ringer for micheal j fox.

  • Classic. Great performance by the girl - the way she dials the number and then just stands there looking bored.

  • @ray3mondo lol i can't stop laughing

  • Comment removed

  • Wasn't this one of the first bands that Mutt Lange produced?

  • I like those microphones they had in the 70's

  • if i recall, the singer was really the drummer, everytime they appeared on telly, they played different instruments

  • is it me or does the lead singer look like micheal j fox??????????????

  • totaly dude xD

  • massively seventies-ish! brill.

  • wonder if the girl on the phone ever got through?? lol.....

  • Donno bout her but I normally hang up around 10 rings

  • I was born too early old enough to remember this hah ahhahaha

  • The keyboarder taught me science for a week- hes a substitute teacher in Wiltshire lol

  • Got as high as 27 on Billboard Charts for week ending Oct. 14th 1978.

  • i wonder if a lot of the backing vocals are sung by producer mutt lange? he can pretty much do anything with his voice

  • The B side to this was 'Bad For Business.' Its fantastic, anyone out there in cyberland got it???

  • I have Bad for business. want me to upload?

  • did they have a bass player called keith?

  • Man this is like the coolest. I was born to late! This sound is soo glam. I love it.

  • ragmonsta wot a classic , wot a year, never will be beat

  • Is this the brother of Michael J Fox?

  • NO.. this band were from Birmingham, England!

    I

  • @beanster64 thought the same thing even before i read your post :D.

  • @beanster64 lol it certainly looks like mjfox

  • lmao

  • is that the same guy on the drums??

  • this is awesome! i am 52 and this was never played where i live. (springfield missouri)

  • Didn't Mutt Lange produce this ?

  • Great pop track - very ELO / Jeff Lynne derivative too. Terrific post.

  • It makes me laugh how people watch good tracks then text negetive messages about them calling them wankers or some other insult. Only a wanker would listen to the track first then insult them. At least they get paid good money for being wankers.

  • @caxfingers I hear ya brother! BUT, I wish everyone else would. Billy Gibbons. UK

  • @caxfingers Just took me back years is all :)

  • @caxfingers Precisely. Shit or shit-hot, any band, then or now, doing their thing is alright by me. Too much negativity on this channel. But when the clip is concluded by that hopelessly unfunny dog's knob Steve Wright attempting to take the piss, what can one expect from random ignorant viewers?

  • @MapsOfJupiter "hopelessly unfunny dog's knob Steve Wright" <-- that just about killed me. I'm probably not going to stop laughing all day :)

  • Well, you should know, being one yourself. Did you ever see this band live all those years ago....they were brilliant

  • So damm good song !!!

  • Is that Michael. J. Fox as the lead singer. hahaha

  • lol,,does look like MJF!!

  • ...Family Ties style?

  • michael has a great voice, tho. listen to "light of day" by him and joan jett. it's from the movie of the same name.

  • This song is really good!!!

    Super remix!!!

  • Unfortunately, this song was turned into a naive pop jingle. Was originally Turn on to Jesus.

Now imagine if the full version of The Day The Earth Caught Fire would have been in a movie...

Moving in Circles is also stronger than this. Dangerous Ground...

  • Mr Thomas is my music teacher in bristol. i go to monks park school. he told us all that he played in a band called city boy and i didnt believe him. but then i googled it and i found out he's really cooool :D

  • Lucky girl! Send our best wishes to him!

  • wow :) awesome!

  • oh ! the late 70's pop-rock. that is so great to remember

  • very average and nowhere near as good as i remember.

still, time distorts memories, and where

would we be without a little nostalgia??

  • the 80s chick on the phone rulez!

  • i guess she would be a 1978 chick.

  • this song was renamed because of the jews.

  • Thanks for posting - from back when "pop" was sometimes decent - and even had guitar solos! I was about 14. Nice blast from the past:)

  • Telephone songs rule!

  • Telephone songs! I was playing my LP "One Hit Wonders of the 70s" and was wondering why they didn't also include "Hello This Is Joanie."

5705 is as good as ELO's "Sweet Talking Woman".

  • fantastic love this tune summer of 1978 ,great memories love city boy, there other single oh what a night a classic loved it ,5705 BUT THERES NO REPLY I KEEP CALLING,SING IT.

  • 5705 is the best song EVER

  • Yep, lead singer could pass off for Michael J Fox :)

Nice looking bloke (and no, I ain't gay) :D

  • Steve Broughton, not sure what he's doing these days.

  • Apparently, Steve Broughton goes by Steve Lunt now. I've heard he's doing quite well working at Warner Music. He co-wrote Cyndi Lauper's "She Bop."

City Boy still remains to be one of my all time favourite acts.

  • I bought this record when i was 15 love it then and do now ...wayne

  • That ain't Michael J.Fox, take a look at there homepage dude

  • Have been looking for this for ages - loved the song at the time and still do! Thanks

  • The chunky guy with the dodgy beard in the background later re-appeared as lead singer of short-lived 80s band "THE MAISONETTES"!

  • Lol Mason, don't know what happened to him.

  • I used to drink with Lol in a pub called the New Inns in Harborne B'ham, he has since won a couple of songwriting awards

  • He formed the Maisonettes and they reached number 7 with Heartache Avenue in early 83.

  • this got to number 1 in my chart and i was so in love with steve broughton at the time

  • I didn't know Michael J.Fox was a singer!

  • He looks more like Micheal J Fox than Micheal J Fox does,,Pete

  • City Boy's drummer Roy ward sang lead on this. I guess it looked better for the video with Steve up front lipping it. Ward had a great voice and was very underated as a drummer. Great band.

  • Remember seeing this group perform in a nightclub in Torquay in 1978/9

Beleve it or not Freddie Starr played the drums for a couple of numbers.

  • Birmingham, UK boys?

  • I loved this when I was 13, but I have never seen the video before and I didn´t know that City Boy was compared with 10cc! Interesting!

  • OMG! I never thought I would see this again. I was the "top of the pops bopper" in the white shirt, groovy seventies hair and glasses who gazed adoringly at the lead singer. Dreadful song which I played over and over to my family who would turn the electricity off at the fuse box. Ah memories

  • i loved this song and had crush on steve at the time.

  • Reckon their best albums were Dinner at the Ritz and Young Men Gone West. They could rock with any band.

  • i keep calling.........

  • Theres another clip from the same era without the lead singer and the drummer sings it ??

  • You're right. Actually, the drummer IS the singer on this cut.

  • Wasn't Robert "mutt" Lange involved with this band? They weren't the best looking band, but the lead singer is hawt. I remember this song when it still came out, and I thought it rocked.

  • That's right! Mutt producen their five first album. City Boy was his first major act.

  • city boy's problem was their image wasn't great. What did they have in their favour?

Great songs and I'm one of the lucky few to have the lot including their best of, which wasn't a good compilation and their last LP its personall. The most underated band ever.

  • I've never been able to find It's Personal anywhere !!!! Could you tell me where I (or any City Boy fan for that matter) can get our hands on a copy? I have all of their stuff, including the Anthology which like you said isn't so great. I just put Young Man Gone West on a CD from my old vinyl today. I agree, City Boy is the best. Please let me know about It's Personal if you could. Thanks !!

  • It will be coming out on CD soon. Give it a few months.

  • Thanks a lot. I scoured the web last night and some guy in Sweden had a copy for sale ...? I appreciate the update.

  • It's Personal is out now. Renaissance Records released it a few weeks ago. You can get it from them or on eBay.

  • That's great. I'll have to check it out and finally purchse a copy. Thanks again.

  • Cool. I brought my first record when I was 13 years... And it was City boy.. But I was looking for "change in the weather"..

    Just love the old music..

  • My mate had this on a tape called 'Bop While You Mop!' and i bought it off him...shame! What a tune!

  • That bearded man sung heartache avenue, just thought i'd fill you in.This song was always a great song and still is.

  • fantastic song from my youth, wish i was back there!

  • Right, Lol Mason led The Maisonettes circa 1982. "Heartache Avenue" was their hit.

  • He also did the vocal on Tight Fit's No. 1 "The Lion Sleeps Tonight" but they got a dopey model called Steve Grant to mime to it on TOTP and in the video

  • my favorite song ever. better even than MUSE!!

  • You sure that's not Michael J. Fox on lead vocals? Looks just like him!!

  • It's interesting that the audio on this version is different to the audio on watch?v=9SiuhGv10nk which I believe is the original version. The difference is in the pre-solo and the guitar solo itself, which is played an octave lower than in the original version. But the lead vocals sound exactly the same throughout the song.

  • Thnx ever so much for posting this...Absolutely fantastic...Cheers!I Still LOVE this band! Happy Canada Day!

  • amazing, thanks for posting. One of the most underrated bands ever.

  • Saw them in Amsterdam in the mid seventies. Great underestimated band. The original song was called: Turn on to Jesus.

  • Get the SAS and then its done for sure

  • wow my sister had the single. i was only 5. always thought they were from america!

  • Yes, the band had 2 lead singers (Steve Broughton and Lol Mason) but Roy Ward sang lead on this one (I mentioned it in my notes, top right). Anyone know what Steve or Lol are up to these days?

  • I'm confused... the drummer Roy Ward sang this song on the recording.. guess it wouldn't have made good television as drummers can't move around.

  • A great band, if you think this song is good you should hear their albumns, superb stuff like Walk on the Water, Cigarettes, Dear Jean and Ambition. An awsome band.

  • one of those classic tracks that stand out over the years.

  • The keys player from this band , was a maths teacher for 9 weeks in bristol, at my school!

  • its so strange, my uncle was with this band for a short while, but unfortunately he dies last year before i got the chance to ask about it!but a couple of the band members were at his funeral

  • Love this song and remember being turned on by steve broughton!

  • Earlier City Boy where rocking much harder, but this was still great!
