In order for small providers to provide the same service as a national system for the same price they have to reduce quality.

and the begin to raise prices, someone will build another school with lower prices in the same district. No big deal.

Problem is that the market runs on limited recources. Walmart lowers price by having a nation wide distribution network (impossible to have when you are small) as well as reducing quality, by bying products from shabby manefacturers. This is the problem with private education. A nationwide system is cheaper. Private schools also have to maximize profits. In order for small providers to provide the same service as a national system for the same price they have to reduce quality.

Some people dont have a car, and no bus lines near where they are or where they want to go. They will not be able to "choose" their school. If private contractors or firms take up loans to pay for the building of schools, then the parents who pay for education is paying for three things: Education for their kids, profit for the company as well as interest on the company's loan.

Fact is that some costs of running an operation go to manage the operation and towards the building the infrastructure of the operation. These costs are "fixed" meaning they differ little from provider to provider.

More on the school example... IF build a low cost school in an area where you already have a high cost school, then the high cost school is just going to lower their premiums for a while, and run the school that is being built out of business before it is even built.

That is a problem. In fact, I do believe Walmart does that, but it is canceled out by other big companies who also build stores.

I assumed we were talking about the problem of price gauging, but maybe I was wrong. If there is a school that is price gauging, someone will build a school next to it that does not price gauge. I realize that you cannot lower the price bellow a certain price. I was only saying that schools would cost less money to run than they do run by the government.

The dark ages weren't that dark. Problem was that christianity became the established though system. For 1300 years people sensored their own thoughts while breakaways were burned at the stake or executed.
The roman empire itself was pretty dark. I think generally people respect the roman empire too much, and forget the accomplishments of the surrounding cultures, such as the Persians, Carthagenians, Gauls/ Celts, Dacians, Germans, Goths etc.
