That earthquake your referring to was centered in Salem, IL. Felt it here in St. Louis around 4:30am, April 17th. I don't that is part of the new madrid though, not according to the news.
The new madrid fault spans all the way up next to the town where I live in about 20 miles north of the epicenter of the earthquake. Usually following rivers and streams. It shook the hell out of us.
How come the New Madrid fault is only mentioned in Geology books, While the San Andreas, and Hayward faults get larger Media attention. besides that most bloggers in Silicon Valley and San Francisco are there. I heard that if a 7.1 or Loma Prieta size quake took place in New Madrid the Damage would be worse than a quake taking place in Hayward and mainly because most buildings in the New Madrid area do not have established earthquake building laws like California.
