  • yea. i'd say she's a little drunk... lol.

  • ..LAX ?

  • For a woman who was so into control and image, this is pretty sad.

  • Christina Crawford clearly says in Mommie Dearest that Joan's last public appearances were drunken disasters. This just gives more credit to Dear Christina. Joan Crawford was a drunken, mean, control freak. She seems to have a little too much fun when she states that Christina supports herself. Yes, Christina told us all about the neglect, the forgotten checks, and the pitiful allowance. This is upsetting.

  • @MrRJMGREEN Were you present around the time of the alleged abuse? So how can you say what you're saying with such certainty? There are two sides to every story. I think her "fun" about Christina supporting herself kind of makes sense, seeing that Christina was nearly 30 by this time and should have been supporting herself anyway. And so what that Joan is drunk in this clip? She seems pretty charming to me.

  • Is anyone else here insanely jealous of Carol (the little girl?) ARGH!

  • I dont care what anybody says, she is sweet and gracious (I didn't say she was perfect) but she seems lovely to me.

  • Theres a liquor store to the right.

  • HI how are u! XD! The way she said that is so very southern, she totally brought Texas back :) <3 Joan.

  • Notice how she gets very sad when she discussed Christopher. She said that he really hated her, flat out spat in her face once. :(

  • Best part: HI THERE DOLLFACE!!! XD! Damn where was I in 68.

  • I think Joan is beautiful. Her heavy drinking was clearly indicative of a deeper problem though, perhaps her difficult formative years. I have to laugh at the people knocking her for being drunk- shes not the first and wont be the last celeb to appear drunk in an interview. Get over yourselves.

  • @DiabolicalAngel I am so inclined to agree with you. BUT even if she was loaded on Percodan/barbiturates/or booze - consider TODAY's stars when they're F'd-up vs. what we saw here w/ Joan. Joan was fully CLOTHED, dressed beautifully, make-up well applied and dispute the slight slur, she was still coherant enough to manage her composure. NOT something we see with Miss Lindsay or Hilton. I'm just sayin'... :-)

  • @Dexie78 To even equate Lindsay and Paris with the likes of Joan and her contemporaries (not saying you did) would be laughable! Joan clearly could hold her alcohol, although she did admit she'd "Fall on her face" once she got finished with all the work she had to do. I love when she says, "I'm a stroonngggg Dame." And if you listen carefully, she says, "mmmkay?" after that. So sexy and bad ass! Have you seen her 1971 interview that she did in London? She's wearing pink and is so charming!

  • @DiabolicalAngel Oh no, I wouldn't even consider to equate Lindsay & Paris to Joan. Just drawing a distinction that Joan was pure class even loaded and it's sad b/c there aren't stars like Joan anymore and there never will be again. Today's stars are mostly trash. Are you referring to the David Frost interview where Joan wears the pink sleeveless gown w/ matching headwrap and the killer diamond necklace? I've seen that, but it it's another one, no - I haven't seen it.

  • @Dexie78 Joan could do loaded, gracefully. Only a few remain of her era...Liesbeth Scott, Lauren Bacall etc and once they've passed on all we can do is keep their memory alive by watching their films, reading about them etc. Yes the Frost interview is what im talking about! She's beautiful in that too and so classy. I love when she says "Clark Gable had balls," and when she's like "Oh My God they're hers! Not these!" *points to chest* These! *points to shoulders.* Yay for a new Joan friend!

  • @DiabolicalAngel LOL!! I know, Joan was SO friggin' funny. I don't know why it was ever said that Joan had no sense of humour. WTF?? She could have taken that act on the road - just telling stories about her days making films at Metro and Warner's. It could have been like what Bea Arthur did; something like "A Night With Joan Crawford". I would have LOVED to have seen her just talk - telling anecdotes for 90 minutes...what a DVD release something like that would have been. :-)

  • @Dexie78 What a crock of baloney!!! Joan definately had humor that was well ahead of her time. Mae West like in that regard. omg a DVD of just her talking would be amazing!!!!! I love how she handles Carol the little girl in this clip. She's so cute- both of them are! I'm watching a Joan Movie right now "The Women."

  • @DiabolicalAngel OMG!!! I LOVE "The Women". Outside of Joan "there's a word for you ladies but it's not used in high society...outside of a kennel.", Paulette Goddard & Roz Russell gave great performances. Never really thought all that much of Norma Shearer though.

  • @Dexie78 That was a GREAT quote. Also, when Norma Shearer looks at Joan's outfit and says something to the effect of "My husband would never go for that outfight," and Joan is like "Oh honey, when a man doesn't like what I'm wearing, I take it off!" I was like ooooohhhh shit FANTASTIC come back. Norma just walked out of there defeated. I think she's okay, but Joan rocked that part! Mildred Pierce too omg!!

  • @DiabolicalAngel *outfit lol

  • I just realized her hair is rather reddish here. Did she dye it?

  • @DiabolicalAngel I think red was her natural colour, though by 1968 she may have been coloring it or wearing wigs perhaps.

  • @Dexie78 Red really? I always thought she was blondish for some reason.

  • No offense but Joan is very reminiscent of Baby Jane Hudson with the slurred speech and white face makeup!

  • @jaazdadiva hahah that's what makes this clip especially ironic and funny! I wonder if Bette Davis ever saw this? If so, she must have died laughing.

  • yes ,,anotha pall mall please...thenx

  • she sounds very southern at times

  • I like this interview, she is wasted, but a genius!!

  • She's drunk as a skung lol

  • She's DRUNK! LOL!

  • @sweetcharlie63 I know and I hate to say it but it's kind of hilarious XD!!!

  • @DiabolicalAngel....what's too worry about? it's true she was a drunk. and yes, it is kinda hilarious!

I've been in a wheelchair at the airport before, the combination of liquor and altitude does not mean "getting happy"

  • @sweetcharlie63 I would have loved to ger drunk with Joan! Then I'd let her do what she wanted with me lol I'm bi and i think she's beautiful (she was bi too :))

  • @DiabolicalAngel....Me too!!! LOL But, I'm not Bi, I'm Gay. Hmm, we should be friends! She was exquisite beauty.

  • @sweetcharlie63 Well Joan is a gay icon so that's perfect! And her first two husbands were bi apparently, Douglass and Franchot. Did you know she had a one night stand with marilyn monroe? Marilyn talked about it at length. I accepted ur request. Yay for a fellow Joan fan!

  • @DiabolicalAngel.... yes, and I believe Marlene Dietrich also. Thanks for accepting my request. Did you know that JC was about 5'4'' tall? What do you think of Christina? Mommie Dearest is about as Gay campy as you can get.

  • @sweetcharlie63 Four of my special ladies-Dietrich, Garbo, Crawford and Bankhead were all bisexual, Bette, sadly was straight. I say unfortunately, not because I have anythign against heterosexuals, I just think it would be fun to fool around with her! haha. Yes Joan was quite adorable..you can see her shortness in the episode of the Lucy Show where she pretends to not be interested in acting. Gah, so sweet. Christina? I think she's appalling. She and BD Hyman.

  • @DiabolicalAngel I love the random kid in Joan's arms. Kid in one arm, cig in the other. What a diva. Maybe we will meet in another life! :P

  • I love Joan in this video :)

  • Ineresting how she talks about her daughter... saying she supports herself

  • @RodTalon0000 As well she should, she was nearly 30 years old lol.

  • How fascinating, I had no idea this footage existed. I agree with the others, Joan still looked great and does seem to radiate fun and kindness here. She was very professional and seeing her so candid is very interesting. As for the drinking, why not? She had been through a lot and knew all the happy years were behind her. That said, she soldiered on with glamour, polish and class...take a lesson, 21st century hippies and slobs!

  • her ankle is samshed and so is she...but I guess its tough to be a movie star...

  • Light my cigarette and wheel me to the airport lounge. I need a vodka and Pepsi!

  • She is fierce, even loaded she remebers what to say. Just like my grandma. I adore her!

  • chiiiiildren!!!

  • "HI DOLL FACE!!!" Haha! Love her =)

  • high as shit

  • It's OK Joanie I have to get drunk to get on a plane too!

  • hiccup!

  • @brooksp1202 LOL I laughed out loud at your "hiccup!" comment. :-)

  • Light my cigarette and fix me another vodka and Pepsi! Drunk or sober, I love old Joan! She was a great actress and a great star!

  • your the best joan!!! rip

  • "I'm a STROOONNNG dame."

You certainly are, Miss Crawford. Stone cold sober, or stinking drunk -- doesn't matter. She was a Movie Star from the top of her head to the tip of her fingers.

I also find it interesting, since alcohol supposedly reveals the "true" nature of a person, that Joan seems genuinely pained about her separation from Christopher, and also truly proud of Christina ("I got news for ya... she's independent!").

  • I'm gonna take the cast off and walk in like a soldier! HAHA I almost shit my pants hearing that!

  • "Dislocated??? It's kinda smashed!"...Almost as bad as Joan! LOL! I love her...I pick up Children wherever I go! She has a cigarette going in one hand and a little girl in another. Somebody needs to get her another drink! LOL!

  • Is she drunk, or high on painkillers? What a messy interview.

  • "I pick up children everywhere." Classic

  • @Mikeyt369 I cringed when she said that line.

  • I love this woman...if u look up the word star her photo should be right there..i dont believe all the crap her ungrateful kid said..she musta 4got 2 include how she would flash round her moms name n have bitch fits n get fired from production...rip joan...burn in hell christina.

  • she is so drunk! :-) how many vodkas did she have on that plane? :-)))))

  • Gosh I would love to have met her and just gushed how much I love her!! To this day there is not one star who loved being a movie star so much and truly loved and appreciated her fans!

  • @elwoodsn ---You are ABSOLUTELY RIGHT! It Drives me crazy when her name is mentioned and people think they're funny with the "hanger" jokes! No one loved their fans more!

  • This is to die for!!

  • Joan Crawford doing the very first hit of E

  • That's sad...I don't like her drunk. It makes me sad.

  • And I bet she screamed all the way to the Hotel! What a trooper! Love it!

  • She was so drunk she could hardly talk!

  • What a cool clip! Even though she's clearly drunk, she's every inch a star, looking glamorous and treating her fans & the press with courtesy and kindness. And as has been commented on here, she sounds VERY much like Bette Davis at times! THANKS for posting this fabulous footage! :)

  • She oozed saccharine and spit venom.

What a nasty old cow she was.

  • remarkable footage

  • She sounded like Bette Davis at some parts of this clip. Great upload tho! She was still poised and classy!

  • are you bowred???

  • She was still in poise saying "You wanna see it???" LOL Maybe the effect of the pain killer was this making her look like drunk or maybe she really is drunk. But still glamourous! I'd imitate you when I'm drunk Joan, still graceful and with poise! A star!

  • Joan Crawford embodied the classic Hollywood star stereotype. her entire adult life was a stereotype.

  • i wish i was that drunk

  • what a bitch all i got to say but a good actress

  • i love joan but was she drunk she sounds like it

  • Who couldn't love this woman? I never thought I would be able to call Joan Crawford "adorable" but she sure is here! She appears to be drunk (as I have been..which *most of us* have been at one time or another) and she absolutely radiates fun and kindness. Notice how she fumbles when she tells a little white lie about hearing from Christopher. Bless her heart. A great lady.

  • @nonbreeder ---I totally agree with you---I just love this amazing clip!!!

  • The 60's were fun weren't they kiddies? Booze everywhere and no one gave a shit.

  • @DA90027 --So true!!!

  • Crawford was clearly on SOMETHING here -- alcohol, painkillers, a combination of the two. But.. DAMN! Some inner working of her brain still made her want to perform "like a SOLDIAH!" and play the Great Star. And that, my friends, is tarnished Klass with a capital K. Sure, she's bombed; sure, it's slightly embarassing -- but goddamn it, SHE'S A STRONG DAME! And she's giving her BEST. Even smashed, the true Greats were, well... GREAT. Today, a drunk Lindsay or Britney is just a another drunk slut.

  • if joan was in pain because of her accident to her ankle's, then she was probably on painkiller's as well as drinking! Boy! Seeing her in color is very different to black and white~A very mask like visage!

  • Interesting but sad -- Crawford was obviously drinking during her flight and is obviously drunk. Her speech is very slurred, yet she still plays her role as a star (and she was, in my opinion, a great star) like the professional she was. I'm glad to see this unusual interview. It's a reminder that Crawford, like anyone else, was a complex person.

  • She's totally sloshed here! I love how she tells the interviewer getting into the car...."I don't need any help!" LOL~

  • @MommieDearest67

If I had to suffer a kid like Christina, I'd drink alot too.

  • joan crawford rules

  • Her publicist must've been on a separate flight.... I can't imagine allowing her to interview in that condition!! This is just wrong on so many levels.

  • A few vodkas go great with Precodan!

  • She was sauced!!!

  • LOL at 3:39 the exchange and expression of the blushing little girl and Joan after she says, "I have to earn a living to support children". You just wanna say, awwww golly gosh geee"

  • My God, was Joan Crawford the ONLY celebrity who ALWAYS took time for the fans? NOBODY replies to fan mail or signs an autograph anymore. I wish I had been around while she was still alive just to have gotten an autograph. God bless Joan for always remembering her fans. What a woman!

  • @Dexie78

    Seriously. a true star.

  • @Dexie78 --I tell people that same thing all the time when every time I mention her name they all say "NO MORE WIRE HANGERS!" Only thing they know about her....drives me crazy!!!! That little girl was so lucky!

  • @SHRINA17 I know! For real! Faye Dunnaway totally screwed Joan's legacy via that movie (not that it was her fault - it was just an over the top script) among people who don't take the time to dig deeper to understand who Joan really was and or who are much too young to have known of Joan during her prime. IMO, and I'm 32 years old - I take Christina's allegations of "abuse" in context with the times. My parents were beaten with switches from a tree. Today, that's abuse - back then - not.

  • I swear, EVERY time I watch this, I enjoy it more and more. I feel like Miss Crawford was being VERY real and that we got a very good peek as to how Joan really was and she's absolutely enchanting. When she's asked about Christopher, the look of pain that sweeps over her face and in her eyes is just heartbreaking. She seems at one point like she's going to cry when she says "Once in awhile, yes." in response to the ?: "Do you hear from him?". I wonder if Christina has seen this footage?

  • @Dexie78 I know the Christopher part was hard to watch. Joan once said that he spat in her facce once. Terrible. Love Joan.

  • @DiabolicalAngel OMG, I know. I believe that back then, what is considered now "child abuse" was good parenting. I think Joan did the best she knew how and I believe she truly loved her children. It sounds to me like Christina and Christopher were a bunch of ingrates. I know that's terrible to say, but - - it happens. Love to Joan...God bless her soul.

  • @Dexie78 Exactly. Definitions of "child abuse" vary. Back when my mom was a small child in the 50s, a spank on the ass was no big deal. I think Joan was a product of her environment and her era and much like BD Hyman, Christina especially exploited Joan's fame in order to make a profit. I think Joan is lovely and I'm positive the two of us would have gotten on amazingly well. Damn her for so predating me :S

  • @DiabolicalAngel Hell, I was born in 1978 and I had a healthy fear of the wooden spoon and I don't feel I was abused. But you're absolutely right - BD Hyman (ugh, what a pig) and Christina both made money on their mothers' backs. Disgusting. And I think I'd get along with Joan too. I LOVE shoulder pads! ;-)

  • She had a few drinks on the plane but i still love her,she was one of a kind actress, one of my favs.

  • woman is blatantly FKED up on somethin! oh, and she reeks from an evil wicked child beating witch

  • "How are you gonna do it with your leg in a cast?"... "Take the cast off and walk in like a soldier!" What great determination, she inspires me.

  • We need MORE Joan Crawfords. Have you seen the kids nowadays!?

Take a tip from ol Joanie-beat the little fuckers!

  • Just a little factoid. In the movie "Mommie Dearest", she say, "No wire hanger", not "no MORE wire hangers". It's stupid, yeah, but it's bugged me for a while.../

  • @ccipollini1984 she was brought up around wire hangers due to her mother doing laundry. hence. "No wire hangers!" It reminded her of poverty and maybe abuse! The same abuse she went onto repeat.

  • @travelogue200

what I'm stating is she never said "No MORE" in the film. Just "No wire hangers."

  • @ccipollini1984 You've made that clear already.

  • "it's just shattered, that's all..." priceless....

  • She seemed to be flying the friendly skies....gulp gulp gulp.keep em coming stewardess!

  • "I never laid a hand on those F@*king Kids" - Joan Crawford

  • What a trooper Joan was! She sure looks exhausted and confused from being so doped up on pain killers. I know that there's always so much bad stuff out there about her, but I honestly don't think that we should be remembering her for the bad things that have been said. She was truly a great actress who should be remembered for her beauty and talent. It's a shame that most people only know her because of Mommie Dearest. I think there's more to Joan than that.

  • "walk in like a soldiahhhhh" that's my Joan. Doped up and hurting but hell there's a camera there so she's still going for that Oscar.

  • LMFAO she is smashed

  • What is wrong with her?? I love her but is she on pain killers for her legs or what's up? she is talking werid and slow =(

  • Fake old drunken bitch.

  • @travelogue200 yo momma

  • She was a pathetic embarrassing DRUNK making a fool of herself... The very so called "children" she was pretending to adore and talk about that she so called had to earn money to support... ended up fucking her over in the end!

  • I am a lifelong Crawford fan and I absolutely love this footage!! No doubt a healthy mix of Percodan (the pre-Vicodin era "go-to" RX painkiller) and Joan's infamous 100-proof Smirnoff at play here. She is smashed!! I like how the guy doing the interview keeps coming back for the sound bite, prodding her to say this or that...

LOVE THIS!! Truly a rare gem!

  • @TrumanHugh Percodan was around back then? Oh! Wait a minute - maybe I'm confusing Percocet with Percodan...Percodan has aspirin & oxycodone and Percocet is acetaminophen & oxycodone, right? And Percocet came AFTER Percodan. I think. Either way, I can totally buy the 100 proof + narcotics or barbiturates combo.

  • That child is a lucky lady now!

Please, anybody here says, you can hear southern accent - I don't speak English naturally, so I can't catch it, what's the difference, where can I hear it, what's typcial for southern accent?

  • I got newwws fer ya...

  • oh she is high foh tha GAWDZ!!LoL!!

  • "ill make it i dont want any help! im a stong dame...mmkay!?!?"

  • i kinda love her, in a comical way. yet just her face alone comes across and VERY very hard, cold, and wicked witch mean. doesnt seem like a stable woman at ALL.

  • This is where Jack Nicholson got the makeup for his Joker

  • She was very nice about Christina. She complimented her acting and said she supported herself and she was kind to her fans.

  • What a BITCH!

  • @rure1968

    we love her for it!

  • at least she was still friendly and willing to sign autographs even at her drunk stage. ha.

  • I'll always love Ms Crawford no matter what.

  • Yup. Blotto. Probably her "white water". At least she wasn't beating Carol, that child she picked up to make her look better and distract attention from her inebriated state.

  • Joan was tireless and always found time to keep in touch with her fans, no matter how busy her life was - she WAS a soldier and a wonderful actress besides. As far as being "tipsy," so what? Lots of people have enjoyed a glass of wine or two on long flights (myself included) and what's the crime (for as long as you're not hopping into a rental car and driving yourself somewhere!) Thanks for keeping her memory alive!

  • Crawford was born in Texas, and spent her earliest years there. She worked really hard to speak "cor-rect-ly" but it was said that her natural southern drawl would appear randomly if she was tired or "under the influence". This is certainly true here--- one of the very few times when you can really hear the southern accent coming through. She was probably tired and medicated, and she doesnt't really seem to make any big attempt to hide it. Interesting.

  • Joan was afraid of flying for years, so she might have had a few just to calm her down...None-the-less she's still the best...=)

  • WTF IS DIS REAL

  • If I was with Miss Crawford having microphones and cameras thrusted in my face everywhere - I would have probably been drinking too!!

  • great futage!

  • What an amazing piece of history - who gives a flying fuck if she was pissed or on pills - she was a STRONG WOMAN - is that such a fucking crime?

  • What a great video!!!!!!!!!

  • Poor Joan, she was sweet, but they should let her be,keep this level of respect to her and just let her be...

  • ah give the lady a break....

  • After watching this and comparing it with other people's accounts of Joan while drunk its obvious that she was NOT an angry drunk... if anything she was overly happy and kept talking about the children. Her daughter would always say she was a raving maniac while drunk... I don't see it here. Proof?

  • @OCEANLINERBABY The only prob with that is that she's not drunk, she's loaded/baked...She prolly took too many pills for the pain from whatever happened to her leg

  • "Where did you find her?

"Oh, I always pick up children."

    She was definitely drunk.

  • the old bitch is loaded ah!ah!
