No. Long shows are terrible. I hate it when people complain that a show is too short. I've seen more story, and better written story in anime that are 12 episodes than in the entirety of anime such and Naruto and Bleach. No anime should outstretch 50 episodes AT THE MOST.

Honestly, if you go on longer than normally 26 episodes, you start getting badly written arcs, stupid plot twists, and unnecessary dragging on.

The thing is that with shows based on long-running manga, this is inevitable (and sometimes beneficial). Look at YYH and Rurouni Kenshin, their first 26 episodes were ordinary but they hit their stride in the second season.

I disagree. Maison Ikkoku was 96 episodes and it's one of my top favorites. Hajime no Ippo is another favorite of mine and it's rediculously long. You're right about the bulk of the long runners though.
