Life is full of ironies. Thatcher was a horrible, confrontational, vicious middle class snob. BUT she was right. Profit IS the most important thing. No profit, no taxes - eo ipso no welfare state, no pensions, no hospitals. Subsidising industries only puts off the inevitable and makes the crash when it comes worse. Socialism in all its forms always – in the end – fails because it simply cannot pay the bill.
@Masifun1 it was ironic, scargill was and still is horrible, confrontational vicious . At least Thatcher and conservatism is honest unlike socialism , scargill was on full bubble during the strike and done very well out of it. Most socialists , in the labour party, or anywhere are middle class snobs as you say. This guy is an obnoxious idiot it was his fault the strike failed, but he will never admit it because he is too arrogant
Arthur you are Lilburne Walwyn Winstanely--you are the levellers shot for refusing to fight in Ireland--you are Blake, Your are the Chartists, You are Robeson I don't like "great men" history" but you ARE a great man!!
If only we had listened to Arthur we might not live in such a greed ridden world where toss pot bankers and private industry seek to keep down the working man. We are poised to see the total destruction of public services to pay back for bailing out the banks money which should have been used to keep public services public and availabale to all. Welcome back to the dark ages and to all those who have turned their backs on trade unions you are about to reap what you have sown.
You can say what you want about Arthur Scargill but history has proven him to be right Mrs Thatcher did want to sell off the industries. Harold Macmillan, 'likened it to selling the family silver.' In my opinion anyone who is against unions is against workers having rights!!!
@gopconservative78 in the past unions methods might have been wrong but unions are a good thing. they give workers a voice and stand up for their rights.

Thatcher won, Scargill lost and ruined his union along the way. How this socialist (to most, this is a dirty word; and rightly so) generates respect is beyond me.
The 'heroic' strike. The one that lead to the dramatic decline in union power? the one which ended in the union giving in completely to the government? Actually, come to think of it, the strike was great!
This cretin help to destroy so many jobs with his Marxist attitude. After all that is why so many people voted against the commie Labour party of the 1980s.
@humphreys10000 new labour is scum but unlike us here in the USN you resisted--we justbowed to Reagan you can be proud of yourselves and you have not given up! I salute you!

The man who was crushed by Thatcher. The strike ended on the government's terms. Thatcher went on to be re-elected. Scargill is now rotting away in some insignificant little party, after he managed to destroy the power of the unions; in particular the NUM.
For all his efforts in destroying the power of the unions and helping to push socialism into the realm of obscurity, I would like to thank Arthur Scargill.

The inimitable and indefatigable Arthur Scargill!
The man who almost brought down Thatcher, had the Labour Party not already begun its journey into the sewer of the Third Way.
