  • non a house evaluation can reduce the AAA+ of that game

  • fuckin hard game

  • Psygnosis are responsible for my terrible school grades, and the fact that I work in games now.

  • this game had THE most amazing music of its time I swear.. I still get shivers when I hear it.. just amazing!!! Nothing will ever compare with this game to me.. not ever.. not to mention people underestimate how hard it really was..

  • @PokemonOz I agree with everything you wrote, amazing music and hard as hell. How can anyone who has played it think that it is anything but too hard? Man I spent hours over this game and never got far haha. But it was worth it just to hear the music and watch the amazing graphics and animation. It took me to another world and it was hard to leave. Amazing game really.

  • Punch...punch...punch...step...punch...punch...punch...punch...punch...punch.

it doesn't get much more complex than that :D:D:D

  • I used to be so pro at this as a kid, downloaded the ROM a second ago and lasted about 2 minutes... Then I find myself here.

  • good ol' games...thumbs up if you miss those old good times

  • Heureusement que la partie ne commence pas avec 3 vies...

  • Gotta love that snail on E... =D

  • was my fav game on my bros Amiga fanx for the upload

  • Loved this game to bits, watching it now, the music, graphics and scrolling were impressive.. Wasnt this made in 1989? A game which was greatly imitated but for me never equalled. Nice story/plot to it as well.

  • of the hundreds of Amiga games i had as a kid, this was the hardest one!

  • Amazing game, especially the parallax scrolling used to baffle me every time. Plus it has one of the most beautiful soundtracks in gaming history. Plus it is the only game ever where the final boss is a giant big toe!

    .

Suck on this, Call of Duty!

  • I've got all my EYES ON YOOOUU... O_O All 673 of them...

  • 6:53 They used the Psygnosis logo as an enemy??!!! :D

  • Doesn't matter if you're a green slinky or a red triceratops. If you're in the way, you will be punched.

  • A very intriguing game (especially music). Also a very hard game (in terms of difficulty level). Love it. ;>

  • At 3:13 in the enemy has been stolen from the Super Contra 7 pirate nes game.

  • @piratenesgames It feels like to me, Super Contra 7 Ripped that from this game.

  • those games had souls back then, I don't know.. just listen to the music

  • he would onehitpunch knock out klitschko brothers!

  • Graphically, this game was absolutely amazing for its day. The music was great too. I was just a kid and found this game pretty hard. Maybe I just suck at games....

  • @Flexfuel306 I think most people felt the same way, myself included. This game was harder than Chuck Norris.

  • I remember this game and especially the music ....

  • You Tube does not do a game like this justice. A real Amiga running on a decent CRT TV is the only way to see what a beautiful, silky smooth game this is.

  • one of the best games on amiga...I loved it

  • 6:02 Fastest snail in the world

    7:43 Demonic slinky

These are some of the fiercest creatures you will ever encounter in hell.

  • OMG, this music takes me back in time.

  • I MISS THOSE YEARS

  • 10 PINTS!

The parallax scrolling was way ahead of its time back then.

  • Damn this game was so badass back then =)

  • I want rows of bouncing eyeballs to guard my house too!

  • Als Kind hatte ich tierische Angst vor dem Spiel, wenn ich es gespielt habe. :D Sensationelle Musik!

  • God I remember hours and hours playing this game. It was awesome for the time. I remember having to "Switch Discs" over and over to move forward.

  • epic music and graphic... pretty hard game though :D

  • Collision detection sucks in this game.

  • so much nostalgia. my cousin and i played this game to death when we were younger. first beat it at around 10 years old.

  • one of the best amiga games, despite a lack of moves, this was one of the best games of its time, so ahead of its time also, insanely hard till ya know what ya doing :)

    Epic memorable music too

  • I remember having the Demo Version only. It stil rocked

  • I was 5 year old when i play this game for the first time...

It was scary as hell XD.

But this game i still a good game :D.

I searced a long time for this game.

I never beat this game XD.

  • Goes to show of the days when companys actually had pride and put alot of effort into there games.

  • @djasbo

The Home Computers presented the chance for even a single person to make a decent game, and development costs we're practically nothing. It was affordable to experiment and try something new.

Sadly, today's game market is more about marketable content, than the actual game itself. Its now another Hollywood.

  • its just a moody super mario bros really but lovly atmospheres

  • So after about 2 months of searching I found it finally, I was at a club and heard a techno song that reminded me of a video game I played over and over when I was 11 years old. I did not think I would ever remember what game it was until I searched all of the sega genesis titles A-S. Anyways someone used a part of this song and it really sounded amazing. Great game for its time though thats for sure!

  • Holy hell. I remember this when I was a kid... I always kept trying to go right at the start, to see how far I could go! I vaguely remember it being pretty crazy.

  • Im just watching oyu play this game, and seeing you INSANELY hard it is! The level of diffculty in this game is crazy.

  • How did you not get hit by those god forsaken rocks at the start? My friends and I commonly referred to this game as 'Shadow of the Impossible' because it's probably the hardest game in history. At least on the Genesis.

  • WOW!

  • Beautiful graphics and the music was great... The gameplay is so so, but the cheer visual effect of this game is just gripping. It sucks you in and you want to see what's around the next corner.

  • This is the best game in history!!!!!!!! they need to remake a platform of this in xbox or Ps3 and just create ultra real graphics, keep the music styles and pan flute, have massive bosses.

  • This game had a distinct, otherworldly feel that games these days can't really match.

  • @ReverendSyn Oddworld has always done it very well.

  • Game still gives me nightmares.

  • does this game have any story?

  • @y2kize Yes. Here's the game manual online: tinyurl dot com slash 25eq8gc. It includes the back story of the main character.

  • @y2kize Yeah... run around, punch rocks. That's the story.

  • did this come out on the amiga 600 also

  • @zachthezombie There's a patch for this game which makes it A600 compatible.

  • My reflex and timing skills got leveled up by this game.

  • 7:47 Hey! That's the jerk that keeps eating my marbles!

  • This is what I had growing up as a child, these kind of games. And even if I died over and over, I would play over and over. Because of the wicked music in it, I loved it so much I still enjoy messing around with it today. Although I've never beaten it lol

  • a fabulous amiga game

  • the music of this game was inspired of the Vangelis album "Direct"

  • wtf, this game is beautiful!

Amazing to think this is running on an Amiga, stored on a medium with 1.44mb of storage...

  • @boeoz ...and no option to install it onto a hard drive. :)

  • man,my brother let me play this once when i was 8 and it scared the hell out of me. fortunately i didn't get too far..

  • damn i played that game before 10 years when i was young and had an sega megadrive and its still so awesome the music ist just godlike

  • what a good game that was...and i especially love the soundtrack....

also, 6:52 attack of the psygnosis logos... :))

  • fucking miss this game!!!

  • @KimIsIll You could emulate it... As My son does he likes to see where all gaming comes from he even emulates the zx spectrum

  • @TheBoozeFairy I know, I did emulate Amiga a couple of times but as a Amiga player you know it too :-) Its just not the same fucking feeling. Even though I play XBOX like crazy I miss the old games and machines. By the way, Commodore got alive again, they work now with SEGA since 2002. As far as I know they are planing a new combination between Gamer PC and Console. If thats true, I would support them rightaway.

  • @KimIsIll Well emulatings good enough.. My mrs face would be a picture if I brought an amiga in to set up somewhere lol (to go with my xbox and pc)

  • what always amazed me was how these games were good for the small amount of memory they used as today 20gb games are normal i wonder what games would have been like on the amiga if it had never went away and been updated over the years like pc,s are today /why did we let the amiga die

  • parallax scrolling - how beautiful

  • I remember being blown away by the graphics, I was like 13.

  • Seems to basic now, but this was cutting edge gaming back in those days! :-)

  • The game that proved everything can be solved/defeated by punching it.

  • My game always glitched at that grey boss that moves backwards and forwards in this clip. I was quite frustrated because the game looked quite promising,

  • One of the hardest games ever....fact!

  • Parallax scrolling man. I used to dream of being able to code that shit.

  • I would have named this game "Punch Man" if I'd made it

  • the music is just awesome, amiga really had great music in alot of their games, even the presentation/greeting screens from the coders in the beginning had their unique music

  • @Altah1

    16 layers of parallax!!!!!1

    *head explodes*

  • 7:47 - SLINKY ATTACK!!!!

  • one of the best games soundtrack of all time. Amiga and SOTB forever...

  • Deadliest foe of the game @ 06:04 *LOOOOOL*

  • I only had a brief moment with Shadow of the Best but the tree level music has stuck with me and is the memory that stands out the most when i think of this game since i was about 8.

  • I remember playing this on the Amstrad CPC, it was very slow, the graphics were ugly (all green) and the music was sapped of its life. Controls were a nightmare too. The difference in games is like apples and oranges. Not all games were as bad on the CPC, just this one. I see now that it was Amiga or bust. Love the atmosphere.

  • What does that switch at 4:45 actually do?

  • @poorliljeffy It's been about a billion years since I've played this game, but I'm pretty sure that was for disabling an electric force field of sorts that prevents you from collecting the power-up at 8:45. You can see the gizmo for it at the top!

What's more, I believe that power up is required for beating the boss and I'm not even sure if you can back track to the switch from there, making the game impossible to finish if you didn't hit the switch earlier. Good old times!

  • does anybody know where i can get an Amiga 500 and this game?

  • @tuRtLemAn064 ; I have one at my parent's attic... including three old dusty floppies containing this game. I'd sell it to you if you would offer me a million euros ;)

  • who made the graphics for this game? Whitaker gets a lot of credit for the awesome music, but you never hear about the visual artist. Anyone know his name?

  • @autofire07 Two chaps worked on the graphics and programming: Martin Edmondson and Paul Howarth (credited on the title screen of the Amiga version).

  • I need this music for a ringtone. Ah the memories.....

  • still got this game and my amiga fab graphics and music.

  • *sighs* they just dont make them like they used to.....

  • kinda crap gameplay but visually this game was a showstopper on display at any tea party or down the computer shops.

  • Amazing game

    amazing game

    amazing game

  • Good old times...tears in my eyes...

  • Man this takes me back! Now this was a golden age of gaming. Nowadays you have games with high production values etc but without the spirit and soul they had back in those days where when new awesome games came out you would just be in awe.

  • I agree. This game on the amiga was a graphical and audio marvel. On the atari st it was a graphical and audio fuck up.

  • I love the music and the art, but the gameplay's not rudimentary so much as essentially nonexistent.

  • I loved the amiga. Shen I got the Genesis verzion I thought it was great with the preserved graphics and the music was almost as good, I was really pissed when they had a really wimpy punching sound instead of the mighty "kreaAACK" from the amiga

  • yet again anouter amzing game

  • the music reminds me of a mellow version of Finnish humppa.

  • graphics at the time...awesome as i remember....gameplay however.....shite

  • one hit kills..those enemies arnt very tough or your main is super tough

  • I think the people who made this were on Salvia or DMT or something.

  • I still say to this day that if Salvador Dalí, the Father of Surrealism, would be alive when this game was made, he would've given it his total blessing! EVERYTHING on this game screams Surrealism... the shape of the mountains, the trees, the clouds that look like blimps...hell, even the last boss looks something out of

    "Persistence Of Memory", Dali's master-

piece! EA should SERIOUSLY reclaim this license from Psygnosis and remake this Gem...A.S.A.FRIGGIN' P.!!!

  • Actually, it's better for EA to not even get close to this awesome game, otherwise it'll just turn into a mainstream turd, like it's doing with almost everything they make.

  • the reason I'd mentioned EA is because 1)they were the ones who distributed the SegaGenesis version here in The States & 2) I'm not sure if Psygnosis is still running or if they closed thir doors. point being: this game deserves a modern comeback, regardless of who does it!

  • Psygnosis were bought by Sony. Reflections the development team that wrote Shadow of the Beast are now owned by Ubisoft, so I guess the copyright lies with Ubisoft as the game belonged to Reflections.

  • even better! imagine the remake running on the Splinter Cell engines...total PWNAGE!!! thanx a million for the info,

    Galahadfairlight.

  • I used to love this game when I was REALLY young. Haven't seen it in honestly about 20 years. Looking back the gameplay is shockingly bad and the sprites are laughable. The parallax scrolling was good for the day tho.

  • music has bewitched me. character scares me more than the enemies. is that a beak?!

this game looks like a ...disturbing experience.

  • @KRG11988 the main character has been turned into a beast (therfore the title of the game) you see him better in the intro and death scene, he looks kinda like a purpleis grey satan.

  • The eerie settings, the multitude of bizarre creatures, the difficult gameplay make this one of the darkest & maddest video games ever

  • This and "Populous" are the two games that really made be decide t go out and buy and Amiga immediately.

Very hard, mostly because of the flawed hitting-control, but still this is one of those "must have's" of the Amiga.

  • This game was so fucking hard!!

  • The music makes me happy!

  • @putridbeing :) mee too. Music back then was awesome, Turrican II, SuperCars 2, Xenon 2, Lemmings.. all had brilliant music.

  • I had this for my Amiga 500 back in the day. Gameplay sucked IMO, but the music was awesome plus I got a "Shadow of the Beast" t-shirt that was included in the game box. Score! Thanks for posting!

  • I have the Sega Genesis / Mega Drive version of this game (and the sequel) :) Looks very similar to the original Commodore Amiga version.

  • The C64 did a good job with the music.

  • Awesome music and graphics, HORRIBLE gameplay.

  • Hard to believe this is 20 years old.

The graphics, scrolling and music looks impressive for its time alright.

  • I just heard of this game on a blog, and heard that the music was the most awesome part of it-- IT IS!!!! Of course, it looks like you can pretty much take out anything with one punch, but whatever! Great graphics (especially for the time!)

  • this game scared the hibby jibbies out of me!

  • This game was SO far ahead of its time when it came out. My jaw was on the floor with the music and the scrolling. I'd never seen anything like that even in the arcades at the time.

This brings back so many memories, thanks for posting.

  • was a bloody hard game, i completed it on Commador 64 but not on Amiga but max health was 25 on 64!

  • Immense game, bring a tear to my eye :')

  • back in the day i was stunned by the graphics and music this was the first game i played for amiga

  • i played the whole game <3 *__*!

  • Sweetest punch sound in videogame history.

The paralax scroling still looks nice after all these years.

  • Heh. It sounds like someone slamming a thick, heavy book.

  • Music is this game is the best - that way i was scared when i was young

  • i love how up until the end of the video he plays it careful, then for the boss he's like screw it PUNCH PUNCH PUNCH. As a kid, i could never figure out what to do in any of the games in the trilogy, i think i remember being stuck in this forest level and never playing further as i never realised you could punch that ball in the guys hand and get the power up... difficulty aside i still loved these games purely for their sound and visuals.

  • omg...never thought i see this again :D

this game scared the shit out of me when i was a kid

    GREAT!!!

  • yesss... i don't see this game and good music19 years...biggg nostalgi for me

  • Back in the day when games were solid.

I loved this game on the Amiga but they made a mess of the Atari ST version.

For some funny reason Psygnosis games on the Atari ST were terrible compared to the Amiga versions.

    Were they biased?

  • I think the ST just didn't have the same kind of graphical flexibility the Amiga offered.

If you want to see a really bad Psynosis port, take a look at the Megadrive/Genesis versions of Shadow of the Beast.

  • indeed. Nowadays its more about the profit than the fun of making a good game. +1 for you

  • most 16bit games were designed for the ST as the lowest common denominator.. 16colors, no hardware scroll or sprites,

psygnosis were one of the few companies to make amiga specific games (which they had to butcher to fit on an ST)

st was a bit faster at 3d though :)

  • No, the ST was just an awful computer.

  • @TheKidDoc81

If you take an Amiga 500 and remove a number of nice features (graphics and sound silicon) from it (and speed up the CPU marginally), you get an ST. Simply a less capable computer.

  • @M7SFH

That may be, but the colour palette for this game was just awful on the Atari ST. Everything was either green or brown including the main character. There wasn't even any background music. If you compare the versions of Blood Money, you will see that there are minor differences, but with this game and Leander (another Psygnosis game that looked great on the Amiga) they were both a mess on the Atari ST.

  • @TheKidDoc81

Just had a look at the ST version, and you're right, they were just lazy with that port. The ST can do much better than that. (The only reason I popped in the Beast game disk was for the music and graphics, so if you don't even get that.... )

  • @TheKidDoc81

No atari just wasn't as good as the amiga period.

  • @MrYossarianuk

I'm not saying the Atari ST was a better machine.

I'm saying that Psygnosis or Reflections Interactive made a terrible port for the Atari ST.

  • @TheKidDoc81 The Amiga was more powerful. They optimised the games for the best platform. That's what made Psygnosis games stand out.

  • @TheKidDoc81 Not only that - Psygnosis's games were originally made FOR the Amiga, THEN ported to the Atari ST. The only real competitor of the Amiga was the IBM PC.

  • Beautiful looking game - the parallax scrolling was amazing back then. The music is legendary.

    Nice posting!

  • the music use to give the creeps back in the day when i was a youngen...

  • the graphics and scrolling were fantastic, i loved my old 500 plus amiga, that for me was where i really got into games, i had the master system, atari 2600, spectrum etc etc but the amiga was where it really all began for me, superb

  • I Think this and the FM Towns Marty/PCE CD versions are probably the greatest soundtracks of all time for me.

  • I think Beast 3 is best playable of all beast games. For some reason Psygnosis never did better graphics than here.

  • omfg i loved this game^^

  • played this game about when i was 5, almost 20 years ago, i always walked to the right, and beat the stages. after the flying level and never came trough the door and never foudn out why^^

  • Damn, this was my fave game of all time...the music damn good too. Normally peoples perception of old games means we tend to think the graphics were better than we once thought.

Niuce to see this is not the case with this game. If only I could find it on a Amiga emulator. I remember it being a flipping tough game to complete (a task I never did), so I do owe this game a slap.

  • this game must have had the best graphics of its time!

  • Ótimo!!!!!!!!!

    Você joga muito bem!!!!

Esse jogo é demais e essa música é muito legal.

    Perfeito!

    Parabéns!

  • great graphics (and music) from Psygnosis. Amiga was very powerful in graphics. Thanks for posting this, beautiful memories...

  • Fantastic game it was brings back memories. 15 years ago I played and completed, well worth it, especially in those days, makes me feel old lol. The games in those days were brill for us

  • this game showed what the amiga was all about. the graphics and audio was just stunning.

  • nice playng man, i have still amiga but i dont play it anymore, i remember when i was a little kid and i played this game.

  • Man this game creeped the hell out of me when I was a kid. I probably only ever got like 2 minutes in.

  • Aha, so... I'm not the only one! :) I used to play this, but certain parts of the game were just too creepy. My favourite was the part when you enter the well.

  • Haha I thought I was the only one scared of this game when I was a kid. My mom would play it all of the time and I would sit and watch her and be terrified from the music. Hahaha. I still find the music to be unnerving. It's amazing.

  • creeped the hell out of me too!!! lol, but completed teh game in the end though 15 years ago, brill game!!!!!!!

  • stunning gameplay and visuals at that time. nothing came close to competing with amiga. i played the game only to listen to the awsome soundtrack and watch the crisp visuals. gameplay was crap, unrealistic, and poorly executed. one punch fits all sizes!

  • Wow i remember this game the music made the game what it is a CLASSIC.

the second level music is very eary

  • I remember playing this game on the C64 when I was a little kid...

I found this game to be so unnerving... It was mostly the music that did that.

    Never got very far though.

Once I made it past the skeleton boss with the wall, but I died in the part after that. I was so mad, I gave up and never played it again :P

Nice to see this game again, brings back memories :)

Although I still find the music still upsets me somewhat, hehe

At least now I get to see the rest of the game :D

  • I think I had this on the
