Lewis was a joy to watch. I would've like to have seen the rematch w/ Vitali but to Lewis's credit any man atop the sport at 39 deserves to retire on his own terms. Lewis was a joy to watch. I would've like to have seen the rematch w/ Vitali but to Lewis's credit any man atop the sport at 39 deserves to retire on his own terms. After the Spinks fight he became a head hunter. Stopped being the fighter Kevin Rooney and Cus trained. He would have been one of the greatest fighters in my opinion but he was an idiot and fucked it up for himself. Either way he's still going down in history as the youngest Heavy Weight Champ.

Shannon Briggs is talking shit, he went all the way with Vitali at 39, against Lewis when he was 27 or 28 he was knocked down 3 times and only got to the 5th. Foremans last fight was against Briggs when he was 48 he wernt exactly the big hard hitter he once was and Vitali isn't exactly known for his good hand speed !!!

@zh1992 Vitali destroyed Lewis throughout the fight, it was only a matter of time before he'd have stopped him. The cut came from a slice punch. That means that the friction of the glove caused the cut, it's almost like a graze or a deep carpet burn. Vitali wanted a rematch, Lewis promised it, then saw the re-run of the fight and retired. What does that tell you? Lewis might have edged out Wlad, MAYBE, but Vitali would have beaten him

Huge boxing figures, like everyone on HBO (Foreman for instance), and Sky (McGuigan) recognized that Vitali won that fight. A true champion would have wanted to silence the critics. Instead Lewis carried on running his mouth AFTER the fight, only to retire. True boxing people know the truth and deep down so do and Lewis. Oh &it was 10 months after Tyson fight

If the fight had gone on and Vitali's eye got worst, which it would of due the amount of big punches Lewis was landing he wouldn't be allowed to fight again. It was a year, Lewis vs Tyson was 8th of June, and Lewis vs Vital was 21st of June.

@zh1992 he won because the dr deemed the cut too severe. It was clear Vitali wanted to continue and was not hurt. It was simply a bad cut caused by a graze type punch where the friction of the leather tears the thinnest skin on the human body. It doesn't mean anything. Yes it was a year, so what? It was the very next fight. Mayweather has been out for a year too, do you expect him to lose to Ortiz? Lewis said himself "i'm like a fine win, i get better with age"... then he bitched out & retired

It doesn't matter if he wanted to continue, 'the dr deemed the cut too severe' it would be irrisponsible not to stop the fight with a cut that bad. @zh1992 It was a grazing right hook when in the clinch, followed by Lewis pushing his head into the cut. Of course the cut then went on to open up further but the intial damage was not caused by a power punch that hurt Vitali. Furthermore we're not discussing the result, we're discussing who was a better fighter. Forget that 1 punch (the same way that Rahmann isn't better than Lewis based on 1 punch). If they fought again Vitali would have killed him, hence Lewis' decision to retire.

@quezcatol If the fight continued Vitali would've gone blind in his left eye and never boxed again and since both men were tired and had taken each other's best shots, I didn't forsee a knockdown until at least the eighth by which point the ref, if not the doc definitely would've stopped the fight so Vitali still would've lost.
