Growing up as a kid here in Argentina i remember in the dictionary under the definition of motorcycles there was a picture of a 40´s vintage Indian chief. truly the most beautiful motorcycle ever made. Sir i take my hat off in reverence!
i'd watch that truck more closely next time you back up if i were you, other than than it is a nice looking bike and you are lucky to have it. Ejnoy it
Yup! Talk about durability... My '47 Chief has NEVER been head-open. Same bottom end, pistons, valves and all. A modern clutch pack (tired of that damnedest babbling jump) and goin' always fine. Contrary of my restored ULH-46, the Chief starts ALWAYS 1st. kick!
Finest bike of all times. The Chief. (The real ones, not the transvestite skirted Victories made today).
i know that its probably not cool of me to say it but man i like to just push a button to crank it up, i'm too lazy to work thqt hard...great looking bike...great sound
As to the questions about the left-hand throttle, it was interchangable from left to right, but Indian had the standard hand shift on the right, so the throttle would normally be on the left. If the owner opted for the left-hand shift, they would change the throttle to right hand. In 1950 left shift and right throttle became standard.
I didn't know Indian motorcycles had a left hand throttle, I wonder if it's because they are kick start and you have to hold the right hand grip for your own balance? My cousin has an Indian Scout from about 1930 that his grandfather gave to him. The handlebars are huge! They are about three feet across, and it also has a suicide shift on the right side. It's a beautiful bike even all dirty and ratty looking. I want it!
Indian is the motorcycle of my dreams (of course, a Chief one). That 42° V-Twin sounds fantastic! I saw that at the starting-warming there is a choke-starter control that you handle, is it original or you added it? In the other hand, what do you think about new Indians, are they ok?
indian built the first american V-Twin in 1903, the year Hrley just went into business. harley's first V-twin was in 1909. Think indians run a 40 or 42 degree vee angle
I own a 2002 Chief with the new Powerplus engine, it is like a member of the family!!! It is good to see more people respecting the pioneer motorcycle! They are coming back in 2008!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I aggree. I'll never forget the first time I saw one on the road. This was long before the "new" ones were made. I was impressed at how it sounded like a thumpy v-twin but more refined in a way. It was as if it was constantly thumbing its nose at any harley or copycat it might come accross. There really is no better.
Ai cara tu ta muito gordo nem consegue ligar essa moto....de dua uma ou voce faz um regime ou vende ela pra mim.........pago U$ 250,00

That's why police departments in the 1940s' favored Indians; thier right hand was free to draw thier service pistol easily if they had to.

Opps missed you shift on that one.

damn i love that bike, old school indian.
tonkanamagarcu 4 years ago
They were left hand throttle as the shifter was on the right. I have a 1940 Chief myself.
The military and Police like Indians as you could pull your gun and keep a hand on the throttle.

Well, the constructíon is the exact same thing, at least compared to a flathead in a WLC.
