Dave, you are an idiot.. The vehicle can't be placed in neutral when the vehicle is in motion, it's computer controlled. The brakes failed down to the burning rotors trying to stop the car, the hand brake failed as well. The only way to stop the car with a proximity key ignition system was relatively undocumented by Toyota. So from your answer, you would have died too..

This was a very sad day for everyone who knew the family. The car was a loaner car. The car had no key (push button ignition), the car had a safety feature which doesn't allow the car to be taken out of gear while the RPM's were high.
Their mistake was not knowing how to override the keyless ignition and the other safety features.
@StrikeRunners what kind of car was it. most push button ignitions shut off the engine when held for like 3 seconds as far as the cant take car out of gear while revs are high i have never seen that in my life tell me which cars do that. the prius has proven it can be shifted into neutral at any speed

First of all, have you ever tried to 911 in Southern California?? Sometimes it takes a long LONG time to get off hold, and actually speak to an operator. Know one knows how long the caller was on line before they got to speak to a person. The "EMERGENCY" shut down on these vehicles takes 8 seconds to activate. I doubt they had 8 seconds before the crash. Even if teh vehicle had been shut off it still would have had PLENTY of momentum to keep going at the rate it was and still crash.

As somebody else said, when you are suddenly thrust into an unexpected situation such as this, panic sets in and so does confusion so thinking straight can be rather difficult for many people.
@jaex26 The best solution was not to turn the engine off but to put the car into neutral to put it out of gear so the engine just revs out but isn't accelerating but instead gradually slowing down. You would just have to hope it slowed down in time depending upon the traffic flow around you.

@elementfreak1344 I have personally test drove the car mentioned (Lexus ES350). The automatic's shift pattern isn't any more complicated than other new cars. From drive, push the shifter to the side and push it forward and BAM!!! neutral.

For everyone saying shut the car off the type of computer problem that resulted in these sudden acclerations made it impossible to shut the car off. It also made neutral as well as the parking break useless.

First of all, have you ever tried to 911 in Southern California?? Sometimes it takes a long LONG time to get off hold, and actually speak to an operator. Know one knows how long the caller was on line before they got to speak to a person. The "EMERGENCY" shut down on these vehicles takes 8 seconds to activate. I doubt they had 8 seconds before the crash. Even if teh vehicle had been shut off it still would have had PLENTY of momentum to keep going at the rate it was and still crash.

As somebody else said, when you are suddenly thrust into an unexpected situation such as this, panic sets in and so does confusion so thinking straight can be rather difficult for many people.

@jaex26 The best solution was not to turn the engine off but to put the car into neutral to put it out of gear so the engine just revs out but isn't accelerating but instead gradually slowing down. You would just have to hope it slowed down in time depending upon the traffic flow around you.

this incident really should warn all of us that cars are not your coffee machine. we have to know how to control a car when its out of control. like putting the gear in neutral in this incident would cut the power to the wheels and the car would gain control.

@sunnyjason this is a newer car, obviously not user friendly if they could not figure out what to do in this state of manner. if anything its the complete opposite. everyone acts like its no big deal that if your car started speeding out of control you could just do it as easily as turning your car off. no, in a panicky situation like this, you would get scared, your heart rate would increase, you would become overwhelmingly oblivious to whats going on and you would practically become useless...

@elementfreak1344 I have personally test drove the car mentioned (Lexus ES350). The automatic's shift pattern isn't any more complicated than other new cars. From drive, push the shifter to the side and push it forward and BAM!!! neutral.
