It's hard to put ANYTHING up against Surfer and Doolittle, but Trompe is an incredible album as well.... Frank Black on a bad day is still better than virtually anything out there.... And having been a huge J&MC fan since the mid-80's (right between Psychocandy and Darklands), I was incredibly stoked to hear them cover "Head On"... No other band should attempt to cover J&MC, but Frank Black can illuminate anything he touches. Great cover.

Some songs have the ability to take you back to a certain place and time. I used to listen to Bird Song every morning on my drive to high school on cassette tape. The song would put me in such a good mood and would be in my head all day. I never saw the live until 2004 vodoo fest new orleans.

I love the audience. On these type of performances the crowd is ussually quiet and maybe even not allowed to cheer like this and the majority of the crowd ussually dosent care about the band playing, they came to see the host. But this crowd reaction warms my heart.

There's a lot of hate for Bossanova and Trompe le Monde because they didn't have as much power and rawness as the first three albums. They were great . Listen to songs like Alec Eiffel and Lovely Day, then to songs like Bone Machine and Tony's Theme. There is no comparison.

i totally agree. i first heard trompe when it came out and i was about 16. i never listened to any pixies again (no idea why) and reintroduced myself to them when i was about 30 (31 now). trompe le monde doesnt even seem possible to write. theyre almost not even like songs. like artwork for the ear or something. impossible to deconstruct or make any real sense of...

I am in love with Trompe and Doolittle equally (first and last works).

Many dismissed Trompe because it was more complex and not as minimalist as their earlier work. The band themselves admit to it being much more difficult to write and record. "It was more like work" to quote Black. Of course, it was also the beginning of the end for the band.

But out of internal strife and conflict often comes genius. To me - Trompe is just that. A final, desperate, brilliant creative gasp.
