It's hard to put ANYTHING up against Surfer and Doolittle, but Trompe is an incredible album as well.... Frank Black on a bad day is still better than virtually anything out there.... And having been a huge J&MC fan since the mid-80's (right between Psychocandy and Darklands), I was incredibly stoked to hear them cover "Head On"... No other band should attempt to cover J&MC, but Frank Black can illuminate anything he touches. Great cover.
Some songs have the ability to take you back to a certain place and time. I used to listen to Bird Song every morning on my drive to high school on cassette tape. The song would put me in such a good mood and would be in my head all day. I never saw the live until 2004 vodoo fest new orleans.
I love the audience. On these type of performances the crowd is ussually quiet and maybe even not allowed to cheer like this and the majority of the crowd ussually dosent care about the band playing, they came to see the host. But this crowd reaction warms my heart.
There's a lot of hate for Bossanova and Trompe le Monde because they didn't have as much power and rawness as the first three albums. They were great . Listen to songs like Alec Eiffel and Lovely Day, then to songs like Bone Machine and Tony's Theme. There is no comparison.
I like all Pixies albums but definately my fav ones are the last ones BOSSANOVA Y TROMPE LE MONDE. I wish they played more some of those albums in their gigs.
Trompe was the first thing I heard by them, I hated it at first but couldn't stop playing it! Soon enough I was in LOVE with this band, still am! All they're albums are awesome. And Kim is my dream woman!!
i heard so bad opinions about bossanova and trompe le mound ...but y cant decide whats better if bossanova or dolittle, and trompe le monde is fucking great!! ... PIXIES just simply doesnt have a bad album !!!
It says a lot that the pixies worst albums, bossanova and trompe le monde, are kickass. Even the pixies' most terrible works were the best works of those years.
i have never heard dennis miller say anything that makes more sense
and i know people think he makes a lot of sense, but i find myself finally finding something to respect in the fact that through out his bullshit line, he could still recognize the good in music. only the worst villians are senseless to the influence of music. i wonder what bill maher listens to? i bet he's into billy bob thorton's whole music (ob)scene. silly old men fall down go poof...
@lesxejets I was a huge fan of his work on SNL, his Off-White Album, Mr. Miller Goes to Washington, and his HBO talk show. Then he went off the deep end.
Charles and Joey put an ad in a Boston paper for a female basist and who shows up? Kim Deal.
Karma, Fate, Destiny, God (pick your poison) at work my firends. Proof that there is a grand design at work that occasionally deigns to put precisely the right people together in the right place at the right time.
Any of the three missing -> and I bet this unique sound never quite comes to pass in the form we've come to love. The perfect human recipe for an overdue rock revival.
Great to see this clip, since I can see myself in the audience. Right after Head On, the audience is panned. I'm the guy in the brown standing up just before it goes to commercial. I'm famous!!! You can also hear me scream out for Joey, my rock idol.
Know what would have made this performance perfect? If Black had smashed his guitar to bits at the end of the song. Smashed it to bits on Dennis Miller's face.
wow the legendary pixies! bird dreams sounds like a jesus and mary chain song... even palace of the brine or the intro of lovely day. hmm maybe they listen to automatic alot before recording trompe le monde.... what do you think?
Thanks so much for editing & posting. More vintage stuff is always welcome. Does anyone else get the feeling the drummer & BF were on speed &/or more nervous while Kim & Joey maybe weren't? Wish there was a video of that shrine of the sea monkey song (can't remember name now) - amazing r&r.
I was watching the night it first aired...I remember really liking "Bird Dream of the Olympus Mons" but I'd forgotten Andy Summers was the show's musical director. 1992, right? Wow...
Same here. Had just got home from work. Was channel surfing. Stopped because the crowd was going nutz (on the DM show ... ??? Hey what's up here this seems odd). Instant Pixies fan.
Like DM says the next night - "they burned the place down last night so we had to have them back".
I had forgotten that Andy Summers was MD ... no wonder the music was the only good thing about the show.
did any one else notice that they clapped really hard for everyone but Dave Lovering (the drummer) which is pretty fucked up seeing that he matters just as much as any of them and kim is cool but i can't say what i really wanna say or i'll get spammed and bad reviews. Seriously though 1 or 2 string for her songs there i said it.
If you're referring to the fact that the bass lines are simple, I don't think that has anything to do with band politics. The Breeders had similar bass parts. I think that just comes with the songwriting.
tienes razón, ninguno fue malo. No entiendo por q la gente dice q Bossanova y Trompe Le Monde son malos, A mi me encanta oirlos tan igual como sus primeros 3 albums.
He actually had them on for a second night. The crowd was so loud that he asked them to come on the next show the following night and they did. Do you have that video as well?
This video is especially noteworthy when you consider how incredibly loud the audience is, and the difficulty of finding live audio or video of 'Bird Dream' (this is the only live performance I know of).
i totally agree. i first heard trompe when it came out and i was about 16. i never listened to any pixies again (no idea why) and reintroduced myself to them when i was about 30 (31 now). trompe le monde doesnt even seem possible to write. theyre almost not even like songs. like artwork for the ear or something. impossible to deconstruct or make any real sense of...
I am in love with Trompe and Doolittle equally (first and last works).
Many dismissed Trompe because it was more complex and not as minimalist as their earlier work. The band themselves admit to it being much more difficult to write and record. "It was more like work" to quote Black. Of course, it was also the beginning of the end for the band.
