Bible camp was easily the worst experience of my life. I remember my grandma wanted me and my sister to be catholic but my parents didn't want to force us, but my parents convinced me that it would be fun so I agreed. Boy was I mistaken. My sister loved it but I was so miserable all the singing and retarded stories, I mean I was only like 8 but the bible stories killed me. Next year my parents asked me if I wanted to go back I said NO and they just laughed. I'm so glad my parents are Athiest.

This in my mind is a profound point. If you choose to leave a religion you leave your whole identity behind. So in actual fact the choice to believe in God or not is not a choice, but something profoundly social. You can't choose to be social or not. You are born into a social world, and thus if you reject God or the institution of religion or society or government or whatever, you reject your identity as a social being. Religion is society, community, family individuality ect... Not that easy.

I can state, as a former Christian who has done the whole 'speaking in tongues' thing, that it is indeed bullshit and I felt like a complete dickhead in doing it, whether the hundred or so people I was with were doing it too or not. It was one of the main things about the church that made me wonder what the fuck I was doing there with those nutcases, and why I was doing the same thing as them :p

They won't understand it, because it's just gibberish. I don't doubt some people really believe speaking in tongues is not ridiculous and that they actually are communicating with the Lord, but in reality, they're not. I never felt it meditative in any way, just a bit annoying
