That quote says NOTHING about the earth being an orb. It clearly states, that the earth is a kind of "bio-dome" where God can see all from above.

I think space travel is a great idea. I know people say we've screwed up this planet, but imagine if we could build a green infrastructure from scratch. This, plus the construction of the spacecraft etc needed for that project, would create jobs as well.

If they find a planet with liquid water, with relatively high amounts of oxygen in the atmosphere, that pretty much means that there has to be life on the planet, due to the high absorption of oxygen in rocks.

also, what life besides microbes could they be really sure of?

I would guess a combination of spectrography, measuring the distance its nearby star and knowing the output of the star.

They cannot be sure about any lifeforms beyond knowing that it as a by-product produces oxygen (like our plant and some bacteria do). We can however make some assumptions about the inhabitant's intelligence of nearby systems: Should they exist, they have yet to send out radio-waves for us to detect.
