one time i was watching this movie with my cousin and everytime Danny talked to his finger, me and my cousin would laugh our asses off :D it is like "Tony" is Danny's little finger puppet
Lloyd was so great in this.Imagine if you were cursed with that ability? And Lloyd conveyed it perfectly. Not the kid in the mini-series,who acted as if he was a normal boy,and showed no sense of dread or fear.He looked like he was about to laugh all the time, which ruined all of his scenes.
@MrKUBRICKIAN i know! that little kid pissed me off. first of all he looked a whole lot older than five, and he always sounded congested, and his teeth stuck out like a horse. ARGHH! If Stephen King's movie had had better actors and a bigger budget it would have matched up to Kubrick's Shining, but, well let's just say if I'm in the mood for King's Shining I'll read the book, which by the way you can't compare to the movie, they're too different.
@MrTiki7690 I think kubrick created more realistic versions of the characters.Nicholson truly looked like he would kill anyone in his way. That face he makes as he turns the axe in a certain someone's chest,is damn creepy.Weber just doesn't have a creepy edge,he's like a frat boy playing a joke.Danny Lloyd was really good,he looked truly disturbed.Mead never looked scared,he seemed to barely keep a straight face.Duvall seemed to act more realistic than demornay, and scatman destroys peebles.
@MissChantii15 yeah but i like him alot more than the Danny in the remake, the one in the remake is like a retard with those big ol teeth and annoying nasally voice
Apparently Kubrick was very protective of the actor for Danny, and didn't let him know that "The Shining" was a horror; instead, he told him it was a drama.
@eleonnoreTV in the book, a doctor who examines Danny tells the parents that they should know why their son calls his imaginery friend "Tony" and not "Dick" or "Harry"...and Jack and Wendy agree. I finished the book but I didnt find any reason
@lanja33 i sought to suggest that tony's name (spelled backwards) holds the answer to the question "why's tony called 'tony'?" i.e., "why not?" but according to wikipedia's entry on the novel, tony's name derives from danny's middle name, anthony. i never read the novel though, so i can't vouch for that.
@lanja33 I've wondered the same thing myself. I just finished reading the book though, and yeah, Danny's middle name is Anthony. Tony's probably part of Danny's own subconscious identity, so it stands to reason that he'd have his own nickname based on Danny's name. Something like that!
@beekneed That's probable. At the beginning of the book, Danny never really sees Tonys face. When he first does so, he notices that Tony looks quite like a teenage version of himself.
Because Danny's full name is Daniel Anthony Torrance. Tony was a part of Danny, Tony WAS Danny. But instead of being called Danny, he was Tony, or a shortened version of Anthony.
@lanja33 It's taken from Danny's middle name "anthony". They make Tony SEEM really creepy, and scary (like a demon/ghost spirit or something communicating through Danny), but Tony is actually Danny's self from the future talking to his past self due to Danny's "shining" ability to see the past, and future of what's in front of him (the shiny ability also makes him able to see spirits. You would know this if you've read the book. :)

@lanja33 Tony was given that nickname by Jack and Wendy because Danny's middle name is "Anthony", or "Tony" for short. It says so in the book.

@lanja33 If I remember right, Dannys full name in the book was Danny Anthony Torrance, so 'Tony' was a sub-concious play on his own middle name. :P
