I worked under USAG-HI for a few years and watched millions of dollars in renovations occur for soldier housing. When I first got there, disgusting conditions existed in 9000 block. A trash strike had left every base dumpster overflowing right after thanksgiving. Maggots were in ant like colonies streaming out of them. Medical barracks all had this stuff before I left and most of 9000 block was renovated. Few 9000 block rooms remained occupied.

I was stationed Ft. Bragg 26 years ago, Smoke bomb hill had fairly new barracks then. 82nd Airborne and Coscom were still using WWII barracks wooden on stiits.

When I went to the !st Armored in Germany, that was pretty fucking bad. Half the toilets didn't work and in the Jimmy Carter days, the Army couldn"t pay their coal bill for heat or hot water during the winter. If people want comfort, you need to join the Air Force.

The Army isn't the Air Force when it comes to living accomadations. It makes you too soft. I was in the Canadian reserves from 1996-2002 and I remember once we got to go to Ft.Knox and play for a week on tank simulators. The barracks we were assigned to smelled of urine and looked like it had not been cleaned for a month. We cleaned the place as much as possible but it still had that damn smell.

That part needs to change not to anything fancy, but be brought up to a healthy standard.

When I served on FT. Campbell and in Germany from 84-88 we did NOT have these conditions. At what point did the Army stop requiring soldiers to clean thier individual and common living space? I can't tell you how many gallons of paint I applied to my barracks walls during those four years. It was not a contractor doing it, my 1st Sgt would get us the paint and brushes and WE did it. So what are these guys doing all day and night? Back when I was in the military (not that long ago), we were expected to maintain the barracks (in addition to our regular duties). That included sanding, scraping, painting, minor or not-so-minor repairs, and general cleanliness. And if that required work "after hours," than after hours work it was. Have to do same for a home, so why not barracks? These guys, on the other hand, seem to be waiting for the butler and maids to do it.

I have been in the Army now 6 years and I can tell you that there are places that I wouldn't want to stay ten min. let alone live in, but what you have to understand is 90% of the time the soldiers living in the Barracks are lower enlisted E-4 and down. Most of which are 18-22 years of age needless to say they don't take care of the building in which the army gives them to live. Also do to there low rank even if they complain it usually goes no were.

I have see the outside of those barracks, and those aren't the only ones that are messed up, however they could have taken some effort on their own and fixed up where they live. When I moved in town and visited friends from time to time they had really nice barracks too. Shipbard life can't really compare because that's a unique situation, but when you come ashore you have a nice barracks to go to.

Look at the "O" Club at Ft Bragg, they have Micro Breweris=es on site, teak wood Bar, elaborate and extremely expensive furnishings, then look at "ANY" of the "troop facilities and you will clearly see where the problem is and what the root cause of the problem is. The Officers Corps and the "Officers Wives" stealing all the funding and benefits from the troops for themselves. Yes it is easy to prove and verify.

This is the wonderful Thanks that our Countries wonderful Military Men/Women get as a welcome Home. The United States Government doesn't give a Shit about our Soldiers or this countries Veterans.... People who served our Armed Forces for 20 years or more don't even get the benefits that where promised them when they enlisted.... This is downright sickening...
