Here's a singer who is shrill, wobbly, overblown, off-pitch. And a manipulative, phony actress. Yet people work so hard to defend her, carrying on with these elaborate explanations about her native intelligence and unmatched musicianship. It just seems like a lot of high-flying excuses for these painful, embarrassing performances. What I don't get is why - why this kind of mass denial? Why is it necessary to pretend?

@fullbuck50 I came to this performance with no preconceived ideas and I was actually quite moved. I have a very keen ear for pitch and Scotto's didn't bother me. The top is a bit wobbly, but no more than Callas'. My impression is of a singing actress who is intensely inside the drama.
