@BigCheese285 Well, Simon did say (though he didn't mean it) that he'd let Kaylee die if they didn't run from the Alliance. I'd say Mal wasn't too far in the wrong with what he did.

@Strongthunder19 Had it been even the next episode, it would be because he didn't want Kaylee dead. However, he's only known Kaylee for a short time at this point, so I believe it's because he didn't want his patient dead and he didn't want the only reason the Captain's keeping him alive to be gone.

But I'm a huge SimonXKaylee fan, so I like to use this as an example of the first time Simon realized he cared about her.

looking back, you realize the catch in his throat was actually him trying not to laugh and right before he turns, he stares at Simon for a long moment, soaking up his reaction before turning with the tiniest of smiles. He probably left so he could burst out laughing out of sight so he wouldn't give it away. LOL!

I fell absolutlely in love with Kaylee's character when I first saw this. I almost stopped watching when Mal said that and I was SO mad at Joss Whedon...thankfully, Joss has a sense of humor...as twisted as it is :p Amazing show, thanks for posting.

I've only seen the first 5 episodes but the moment when Mal tells Simon that Kaylee's dead and Simon's reaction is one of the best Simon moments ever, IMO.
