I am not making any such claim that you are attributing to me. Vidushi Girija Devi is an amazing exponent of the Tappa ang. Pt Krishnarao Pandit is a doyen of that style. What I am merely trying to draw your attention to is that there is indeed a percussion beat pattern which is known as the Tappa Taal. The only one that I know of in thge sub-continent is Pt Lachhman Singh Seen. The others either do not know the taal or have willfully stayed away from it. Thats all.
I tried playing it with Sunanda once - telling her that the real punjabi thekka aka chhoti tintal is/was originally played. The sway of the thekka is a joy to experience and when played along with a tappa composition, one can make out that the composition and thekka are indeed made for each other.
There is a slight difference between the sitarkhani thekka (4-4-4-4) and punjabi thekka, which is actually 4-1&1/2-2&1/2-4-4! Now you see why tappa exponents talk of 1&1/2 and 2&1/2 matra patterns!
Jug Jug Jio! Even Banarasi Pan aka Banarasi Ras hasn't heard of this Theka, Bhaau. Bhai Baldeep, in case you do not know, is the best known exponent of the dhrupad ang and the lone authentic carrier of various musical traditions of classical music.
Shanky there is no such thing as the tappa based khayal gayaki. Go ask the finest musicologists of the Hindustani classical music. As for r8rd's comment about 1-1/2 daana etc may I remind the learned commentator that neither Ust Salamat Ali nor Vidushi Girija Devi ever used the tappa taal which is the typical contribution of the Punjab gharana & which has been so sadly forgotten. The one surviving disciple Pt Lachhman Seen can be usefully approached to throw light on this aspect of Tappa ang.
It's true that Vidushi Girija Devi didn't use the tappa taal while singing the tappa tappa composition. BTW, are you claiming that she was not singing tappa because it's not in tappa tal. The defn. that I have been given is that Tappa is a style of composition which based of complex taan patterns. This is how Mia Shouri, Ghulam Rasool saheb composed the Tappas. If you listed to Tappas from maestros like Krishna Rao Shankar Pandit, this definition gets validated.
Such utter nonsense - the example of Tappa ang is absolutely bogus. This is not how Tappa is sung. How one wishes he had heard the Tappas sung by Krishnarao Pandit, Girija Devi, Kumar Gandharva, Mallikarjun Mansur amongst the older maestros and from amongst the very young and talented ones the likes of Sunanda Sharma, Meeta Pandit, Shruti Sadolikar, Shubha Mudgal, Kaushiki Chakravorty may be cited.
Now don't misquote him, he said that he doesn't sing tappa. He sings Khayal, which have tappa style taans. So, what does it mean ? It means that the taans are of 1-1/2 daana, 2-1/2 daan etc. Khayal taans are not like that. Listen to one of Girija Devi's tappas on youtube, she gives examples of khayal style taans and tappa style taans.
you moron, do you even know who you are commenting about. even if he is wrong, he is right. moreover he clearly said he is singing tappa based khyals..
People like Ustad Salamat Ali, Nazakat Ali, Khansaab Mehdi Hasan, Nusrat sahab, Madam Noor Jehan are GIANTS of music and pride and product of PAKISTAN!!!
In namo hamesha Roshanara Begum ka naam kho jata hai. Akhir kyon ? Roshanara Begum ne Ustad Abdul Karim Khan se gayaki sikhi or agar bade gawaiyo se puchiye, to unse bada ganewala Pakistan se koi nahin.
This particular clip shows Khan Saab after recovering from a stroke he suffered whilst touring in London, 1978. It affected his speech and thus his singing, but his resilience, love of music and faith in Panjtan Paak(AS) gave him the strength to make a recovery
Ustad Salamat Ali Khan was a tremendous artist, who possessed a vast amount of musical knowledge. Alongwith his older brother, Ustad Nazakat Ali Khan, they were a formidable jugalbandhi team. Truly, he was one of the greatest exponents of North Indian classical singing.
Right on Bro. In my opinion This is music for musicians, not for usual folks .You need at least some knowledge of how this music works and how hard it is to master(but can't be).Its a sport for people who have dedicated their lives to this cause and must be respected.Besides U wont get another Salamat Ali khan or Ahmed jaan Thirakwa or Rambhau Kandolkar...So ignore people who talk nonsense.
