I know I'm in a tiny minority, but I truly feel like Hold Your Fire is the best Rush album. It's the perfect blend of snappy, melodic songwriting with prog/technicality. Rush also had their best tones in this period, imo. Geddy with the amazing Wal bass. Lifeson with the jangly guitars. Peart with the punchy drums. Perfection.
This record, song had a really "clean" feel to it. I understand it didn't "rock" as hard as old Rush, but i liked it. And i was a very cynical young music fan back then, hah
O pai do meu primo tem 8 ou 9 discos do Rush, sei lá.Só sei que faltam apenas 2 discos!Quem tem toca disco e esse disco bota na velocidade rápida,a la alvin e os equilos, mt fooda!
Just read that Aimee Mann from Til Tuesday sang backup vocals on this...pretty cool. Can't believe how many times I've heard this song over the years aand never noticed it was her!
Aactually, and this is just one mans opinion, for myself it has more to do with the realization of my own mortality. Children growing up etc..You almost feel a sense of panic because no matter what you do you cannot stop the forward motion of time.It is in some ways an enraging feeling of powerlessness. The knowledge,no- bitter resigination that you are old, you cannot EVER go back, and there is NOTHING you can do about it.I AM going to die, and so is everyone else. ON ONE gets out of this alive.
@reine71658 Old age/death/an unimaginably-better afterlife -- let it happen. Live each day as if it will be your last. I survived a heart-attack and stroke in 2005. This tune is about the far greater things out there -- it's dynamic and powerful.
@SuperSixinches Sadly, we are all caught up in what we call "the business of life." This song says, "what if" we could slow it all down to notice and cherish the wonder of life and the universe. This tune is dynamic and thoughtful.
@jazzypatsan Great point. That's why, each year, I celebrate Christmas all the way up to the evening of Dec. 31. Merry Christmas 2011 to you and a Happy/Hopeful 2012 to you, as well.
@AHoodedDemon Listen to the lyrics and the music its intelligent..Wow im shocked that you just cant hear the genuis of this song??It is a incredilble lyrical play on getting older and time growing shorter..How to try to make your time slow down even thow you are loosing your battle with time and immortality..Not even close to Bieber..Bieber dose not write songs about life..Dont bother being a troll..I only gave you a different look at something..I never insulted you so dont go there...Peace out
@AHoodedDemon 16 year old kid is ignorant as fuck-,- i'm 16 too, bands are metallica, iron maiden, alter bridge and RUSH. just because this ain't sung by your idol, doesn't make this gay.
Yeah, I'm still waiting for a band that can carry the fire that Rush created. The perfect blend of creativity, originality and musicianship. I hope Rush can regain some of that fire with Clockwork Angels.
My dad says he thinks about me growing up when he hears this song. My old man loves Rush. He and I never were close until I grew up and went to college but we both loved Rush. This is still one of my favorite songs because it reminds me of my dad.
I generally do not like Rush's 80s period (post Signals, that is), but even with the 80s-ish production, this is just a gorgeous song, especially lyrically, I think. Even more poignant when you consider what hit Peart 10 or so years later.
People bemoaning the dearth of good new bands should be aware that it is the internet generation and the lack of long term attention spans that dictates a bands life span. No bands are given the time to develop anymore - it is quite litterally the 15 minutes of fame then burn out.
When this generation of superbands dissapears there will be a gaping void of mediocrity that will never be filled unless there is a monumental shift in music culture.
@truthemulator good comment, besides the fact that it's shit. Good music was around forever. But the point is that nowadays the music that is famous is crap. There are good music and bad music on all genres, rock has bad rock and good rock and so on. Today's music is just crap. It's the reflex of an artificial music made by everyone's computer and lack of creativity. There's nothing to "feel" on modern music because it was made without any feeling at all. (I obvisously know there're exceptions)
@am1933 Thank Clear Channel for the mediocrity. They have influenced mainstream music into packaged happy meals for the kiddies. I read a lot of comments from teenagers who love classic rock and oldies. They feel cheated....and they are.
@am1933 thats because your age group had bands like this! look what we have the jonas brothers bieber???? how could you blame us. nickelback staind i mean i could go on and on oh did i mention rap music hahaha keep rockin i know i will.
@am1933 Disagreed; there are plenty of awesome bands around today. Like Rush, they filter in and out of the public mind. There are some people in every generation who appreciate good music, and those are the people good bands will be supported by.
@am1933 And when theres mediocrity people will wake up and stop setteling for shit. I don't know if rock and roll will ever be popular again. But meaningful music will definatley be popular again.
@am1933 This couldn't be more wrong. The internet has done wonderful things for music. There used to be a huge level of intervention on the part of a record companies and there was a huge monopoly on the output. In the 1980s, 6 labels controlled 95% of all musical production. Barely any independent scene existed. You were at their mercy. Now it's more affordable to make your own music and to promote to a specialized audience which guarantees far more integrity to one's own music.
@am1933 this only shows that you know very littte about modern music. enjoy the past, don't dismiss the present. it's much easier for you to enjoy the hidden gems of the past because of the glory of the internet. You don't have to look on fanzines that promise to gain little attention. The internet is amazing for music. It's given music back to the musicians, away sfrom the record execs. Thank fucking god.
This is music that transcends this experience we call "life." No one can travel through time, but it's great to use our minds. Thinking is the BEST way to travel (so sing The Moody Blues). Summer 2011 is gone. Man, where did it go? Time/experience/innocence slips away. We can do nothing in the face of Time (except wait until Time is no more). RUSH is one fantastic band!
And to think, the Rock Hall failed to nominate RUSH (again). I just don't understand it. Can it be that we still haven't escaped the clutches of greedy record company execs who employ commericalization/exploitation to generate huge profits? Maybe Frank Zappa was onto something, eh?
@fietsvriend I won't argue that point! I went to the Rock Hall only once. I wasn't impressed anyway. Bowie was right -- Rock shouldn't be placed in a "museum" -- it should be listened to in private, and performed live in front of the masses.
my teacher used this for a 9/11 tribute yesterday, and i have to say its a pretty good match. 9/11 was a day that changed the lives of thousands of people in this country, and around the world. that day, time really did stand still.
Music for standing on the edge of Eternity. Live your lives to their fullest. We have such a short time in this life. I survived a heart-attack and a stroke. I wish my beloved wife could have beat cancer. My Darling of Heaven, Barbra, I dedicate this tune to you! I love you forever -- W
I have looked at the Rock and Roll hall of Fame comments and I ask you - Does the court of common opinion not mater more? Let the labels play their games. They know better than the fans...RUSH speaks for itself!
So many great bands originated in previous generations, why don't we have anything special these days? I mean the 90's had grunge, and love it or hate it, it was something special, 80's and 70's brought a slew of rock and roll and prog rock musicians, and the 80's brought thrash metal. 60's, i dont even need to say anything, it was when zep turned blues into rock n' roll. 00's and 10's brought us nickelback, disneypop, and justin beaver... Where's the magic, people?
@Nercrophage the magic people? its all in the machines now. they take out all the feeling when they replace artists and their instruments w/ computers and turntables
I agree that contemporary music has been over saturated with "auto-tune" and mindless electronic beats instead of heartfelt art there is still a great deal to be said about electronic music in general. Aphex Twin's songs rival Rush's in complexity and originality.
@richarldluva124 "I disagree with what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it" Franscois-somethingorother aka Voltaire. I don't hate people who like nickelback, but i do hate people who think nickelback is more important to rock music than bands like rush, or Zep. And i assume you understand that Rush is inherently better than nickelback, more unique, and more artistic.
@Nercrophage i know that rush is better than nickelback. i didn't say they were important to rock music or a trend-setter or anything of the nature. i merely stated that it was a good band
@Nercrophage Don't Forget Lil Wayne And Eminem, I don't think people in 30 years are going to be hearing all these 2000's artists I mean Little Kids hear rush, Damn I wish I could be born in the 1960's so that in the 70's
and 80's I could have loved Rush and not feel weird It sucks that you tell a girl about a rush song and she say's who is rush, I love the new lil wayne song by the way, Fuck It!!
@String2112 May I humbly beg who Lil Wayne or Eminem is? Latter is candy, correct? M&M? Of course I know, useless experiment. I would suffer a painful death if male or female did not know who RUSH is? And yes I remain of the "old" white guys? And?
@Nercrophage It's about the money bud. In the 60's you had to buy records cause that's all there was if you wanted to listen to music or the radio but you had to wait hours to hear a song you wanted. Musicians got a percentage of the record sales and the money went straight to them at least enough they could make a living. Nowadays, I can download nearly any music in history for free with a torrent. That's why music production has decayed.
@Nercrophage we have metalcore bro! nu-metal has kinda died but that was back in the late 90's early 2000's. stop being ignorant music has changed but that fact has NEVER changed. their is good music your just lazy to not look for it.
@Nercrophage The magic is yet to emerge my friend. Trust me, someone will step up. I was fortunate enough to grow up during the evolution of music. Our old friends are still ridin' round, hence Rush, Def Leppard the 1-armed bandit is still the thunder God, come on now, we OK until the next magician steps up.
@Nercrophage Nickelback is good. Sure they have nothing on Led Zep, Rush, or anyone like that, but I don't think they belong in the same class as Disney pop and Justin ruddy Bieber.
not everything is bad, really some of THE BEST SONGS ive ever heard have been released this month.saying that the 00s brought us nothing is just stupid, and just bc pop/ electronic has become the more popular genre does not mean music is complete shit.. just bc your opinion is shared by many does not mean it is right or true... btw Rush still kicks ass
I'd consider the dubstep genre as demonstrated by artists like skrillex the current generation's contribution to music history's greats. This is the opinion of a 23 year old member of the generation and a classically trained musician.
@Nercrophage might want to take a bigger sample there bro, don't you think there was shitty pop in every generation? revolutions are happening in metal and like @zickle3000 suggests there is a lot of innovation going on in dubstep, trance and drum and bass right now as well.
dig a little deeper bro. there's always been shitting music. it may be harder to find then during your time, but there's great things happening. there's a lot of new bands bending genres. i listen to everything from metal, jazz, pop punk, emo (real emo, not that suicidal shit), dubstep, and i can assure you real music still exists. i could give you some great original modern bands to look into if you'd like.

Rush is the ultimate good mood band!

At this point, NickelBack will get in the RnR HOF before Rush. You know what that tells me? The RnR HOF is an ABSOLUTE JOKE.
Rush doesnt deserve to be in there, they deserve at least 10 times more then that. They deserve their OWN Hall of Fame.

Nercrophage 5 months ago 33
@Nercrophage the magic people? its all in the machines now. they take out all the feeling when they replace artists and their instruments w/ computers and turntables
Livinglifehigh 5 months ago
@Livinglifehigh all this machinery making modern music can still be open hearted, to borrow a quote from Rush.
Fitzybabe65 5 months ago
@Livinglifehigh
I agree that contemporary music has been over saturated with "auto-tune" and mindless electronic beats instead of heartfelt art there is still a great deal to be said about electronic music in general. Aphex Twin's songs rival Rush's in complexity and originality.
DarkCaduceus 4 months ago
@Nercrophage wait, i like nickelback. they're pretty good!!
richarldluva124 4 months ago
@richarldluva124 "I disagree with what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it" Franscois-somethingorother aka Voltaire. I don't hate people who like nickelback, but i do hate people who think nickelback is more important to rock music than bands like rush, or Zep. And i assume you understand that Rush is inherently better than nickelback, more unique, and more artistic.
Nercrophage 4 months ago

String2112 4 months ago
@String2112 May I humbly beg who Lil Wayne or Eminem is? Latter is candy, correct? M&M? Of course I know, useless experiment. I would suffer a painful death if male or female did not know who RUSH is? And yes I remain of the "old" white guys? And?
superunt43 4 months ago
@Nercrophage It's about the money bud. In the 60's you had to buy records cause that's all there was if you wanted to listen to music or the radio but you had to wait hours to hear a song you wanted. Musicians got a percentage of the record sales and the money went straight to them at least enough they could make a living. Nowadays, I can download nearly any music in history for free with a torrent. That's why music production has decayed.

@Nercrophage Arcade Fire. I'm sure there's more but I'm too busy rocking out to this song to really give too much of a damn.
Cheers!!!

@Nercrophage we have metalcore bro! nu-metal has kinda died but that was back in the late 90's early 2000's. stop being ignorant music has changed but that fact has NEVER changed. their is good music your just lazy to not look for it.
357magtoyourface 4 months ago
@Nercrophage well we still have tons of great old musicians but crap we need a new hero :/
Royart142 4 months ago
@Nercrophage The magic is yet to emerge my friend. Trust me, someone will step up. I was fortunate enough to grow up during the evolution of music. Our old friends are still ridin' round, hence Rush, Def Leppard the 1-armed bandit is still the thunder God, come on now, we OK until the next magician steps up.

@Nercrophage One of these days, somebody with a real and amazing talent will shine through, and then we'll all be amazed, just like back then :)

@Nercrophage Nickelback is good. Sure they have nothing on Led Zep, Rush, or anyone like that, but I don't think they belong in the same class as Disney pop and Justin ruddy Bieber.

@Nercrophage Justin Bieber doesn't deserve Canadian citizenship.

not everything is bad, really some of THE BEST SONGS ive ever heard have been released this month.saying that the 00s brought us nothing is just stupid, and just bc pop/ electronic has become the more popular genre does not mean music is complete shit.. just bc your opinion is shared by many does not mean it is right or true... btw Rush still kicks ass
lilrockable 3 months ago
@Nercrophage There's a lot. It's just hard to find.
ifightaliens 3 months ago
@Nercrophage
I'd consider the dubstep genre as demonstrated by artists like skrillex the current generation's contribution to music history's greats. This is the opinion of a 23 year old member of the generation and a classically trained musician.
zickle3000 3 months ago
@zickle3000 Agreed.Dubstep and controllerism like Ean Golden (Midi Fighter mix)
fietsvriend 2 months ago
@Nercrophage might want to take a bigger sample there bro, don't you think there was shitty pop in every generation? revolutions are happening in metal and like @zickle3000 suggests there is a lot of innovation going on in dubstep, trance and drum and bass right now as well.
JackieChan173 3 months ago
@Nercrophage
dig a little deeper bro. there's always been shitting music. it may be harder to find then during your time, but there's great things happening. there's a lot of new bands bending genres. i listen to everything from metal, jazz, pop punk, emo (real emo, not that suicidal shit), dubstep, and i can assure you real music still exists. i could give you some great original modern bands to look into if you'd like.
