I travel to OZ lots and from my observations, an Asian DO get a 2nd class treatments from the immigration offiicers, we kiwi usually get a warmish greeting most of the time, but if u are an asian, u don't get an greetings most of the time and their passports are often "slammed " back to them instead of "placed" down on the counter.

I still think that foreigners are extremely misinformed before entering a new country - they have no idea what they can and can't bring in. If they don't know the specific items that are restricted, they are aware that there are tough guidelines. When you travel, it is your responsibility as the traveller to research the places where you are going. The main tourism site has all the info...

They are citizens, they can't be deported, by law. The fine was fair. I do think the fine should be increased, to achieve its deterrent purpose. And, I guess when they became citizens, there was no citizenship test in place. Apart from a computer based multiple choice test, I would also suggest a spoken English test. I'm not anti-immigration, as I'm a first generation Australian myself. I expect less backlash from the local born and raised people if at least the language standard is raised.

These couple deserve a big punishment for sure for bringing undeclared food.
that aside,
I travel to OZ lots and from my observations, an Asian DO get a 2nd class treatments from the immigration offiicers, we kiwi usually get a warmish greeting most of the time, but if u are an asian, u don't get an greetings most of the time and their passports are often "slammed " back to them instead of "placed" down on the counter.

Cool down guys. Food can bring disease that exist abroad but not in OZ, which is an island. It has NOTHING to do with racism. Pork coming from either Sri Lanka, Tanzania, China, UK or USA is not allowed. Informe youselves before using the "racist" label when it has nothing to do with it.

The trouble is Australia - we go too easy on new Australians. They open up shops with signs in their own language for heaven's sake. I still think that foreigners are extremely misinformed before entering a new country - they have no idea what they can and can't bring in. And they probably can't understand the declaration's card, either. It's hard for them - I'm not saying it's right or JUST, I think that even for myself, as a Canadian - there wasn't much information there for me regarding restrictions and whatnot for a simple working holiday visa!

It explains clearly what you are, and aren't allowed to take into Australia. I don't think they think it's as secure as it is [EVERYONE gets their bags scanned and most get it searched] they probably think they only check every 5th bag or something.

Firstly, the officers in this video are QUARANTINE OFFICERS. Quarantine officers are SEPARATE and VERY DIFFERENT from Customs officers.
Secondly - most Australians - white or not - are very aware of what they can and can't bring into Australia. If they don't know the specific items that are restricted, they are aware that there are tough guidelines. When you travel, it is your responsibility as the traveller to research the places where you are going. The main tourism site has all the info...

Think about it this way: When your around friends, do you "let loose" with your words, wherein you'd shock/confuse any other "normal" person with those same words?
Simply put, the folks probably got by the test, but once they "integrated" with the other culturally-similar folks in Aussie-land, they revert back to speaking their native tongue.

They are citizens, they can't be deported, by law. The fine was fair. I do think the fine should be increased, to achieve its deterrent purpose. And, I guess when they became citizens, there was no citizenship test in place. Apart from a computer based multiple choice test, I would also suggest a spoken English test. I'm not anti-immigration, as I'm a first generation Australian myself. I expect less backlash from the local born and raised people if at least the language standard is raised.
