i'm confused, what does competition have to do with education? I know so many people that have dropped high school because their schools were constantly quizzing them.
It means that people have a lot of choice on what school they go to. Public, Private, Religious, Charter, and homeschool. Many want this because it gives them an option if their public school is crappy.
Proponents of competition want less red tape invovled in changing schools so it would be available to more people.
The only result that comes from tests in school, and especially nationwide standardized tests, is that the teachers teach for the test and not the subject in questions. We don't send our kids to school to learn how to pas a test, we send them there so that hopefully they come out in the other end understanding the world that they live in just a little bit better. NCLB was a disaster from the beginning
theiamania, there are a couple of points you are missing: a) NCLB only tests students on basic reading, writing and arithmetic skills. Teachers should be teaching to these subjects, whether their students are being tested on it or not. b) Schools have always tested children. You don't teach a child to pass a test, you teach them and then test them so you know whether or not they have learned anything.
One area that no one seems to address is how do we lure more qualified students into teacher education programs especially in math and science. Right now salaries for people with math and science skills are much better in the private sector then they are for the teaching profession so we lose many to business and industry. But $ is only part of the problem, there needs to be an initiative to encourage students to enter the profession.
if you take away money from schools, the schools have less funds to get the things that they need to teach, like textbooks, other supplies.... explain to me then how are schools supposed to rise above when they do not have the needed supplies to teach?
Obviously this man needs to be more specific on what he intends to change, and also as obviously he needs to give more details than he has given on this issue.
Why would you support it? You musn't have kids in public school, or you'd know how terrible NCLB is. If the kids don't do well, they just change the way the scores are "interpreted". It has made the Texas school system one of the worst in the nation. Teachers have to quit teaching class work for weeks to prepare for these tests, so kids miss much needed info. Who'd let a poor student (Bush) choose educational programs? Your vote helped ruin our school system. You went to public school didn't ya?
"Teachers have to quit teaching class work for weeks to prepare for these tests,"
One of the biggest flaws with NCLB is the reliance on standardized tests. Assessment needs to be formative and not summartive in nature to assist teachers in developing the appropriate materials for remediation.
First of all, what do you mean by market incentives. Second of all, most Asian countries, the UK and most former British colonies give kids a placement test at 11 or 12. Those who pass go to an academic middle and high school, and those who don't go to trade school. After that, any testing that is recorded are for those who take the academic route. Here in America, we record everybody's results, and even with that we do a lot better than most right wing pundits give us credit for.
not exactly - because i am also considering the successful schools who will loose money with vouchers. it's like any other political topic - no one is addressing the fact that each situation and school is different and one generic rule like allowing vouchers doesn't work in MOST situations. only SOME. i also don't understand when someone is going to hold parents responsible.
Well, all I can say is that your poor mom is not getting the pay nor the benefits that she should be getting. And by the way, the public schools are doing a great job-It's just that they have to accept everybody-charter schools don't.
What would McVain know about education? He hasn't been in school for decades. Children were not all born the same. Let kids find what they love and what their good at, give them options and let them learn for life not for a test!
Believe me, charter schools are private. They have owners, and they don't have the same restrictions as public schools. Parents are made to sign contracts as agreeing to put in a certain amount of time volunteering at the school, and the students must maintain a certain grade point average or they are out. Try doing that in a public school, and all the libertarians will start screaming government tyranny.
NCLB is a joke. All it does is create pressure to "teach to the test". Public schools will never improve as long as money is taken away from the public schools.
Why do we have to have charter schools that are private? why can't we have magnet schools that are still under the umbrella of the public school system? I'll tell you why. Because the Republcans want to bust the union. The NEA is one of the last big unions in this country, and that pisses them off.

I support No Child Left Behind. In fact, that was one of the main reasons that I voted for Bush in the last election instead of Kerry.
