  • well done video. Very helpful commentary.

  • Sting played like a patzer! Kasparov tried to make things easier for him by not playing any crazy opening. He could have finished Sting earlier if he really wanted to! Nice video! Thanks!

  • he was doing allright, white was better throughout but black was holding out well .. maybe time pressure did for him

  • Very nice video ! Thanks !

  • tss..>.<

  • I've played chess for many years but I learn something fundamental every time I listen to your commentary. Great job!

  • sting is a cunt

  • @rankthis lold

  • why was Sting playing Kasparov is the real question here

  • I didn't know that Bishops are generally considered to be more valuable than Knights. I always believed they were equally valued.

But I suppose Knights can be more valuable than Bishops as long as they're close to where they need to be, right?

  • @G102Y5568 It depends on the position usually. At the beginning of a game their about equal, then their value increases/decreases depending on the position. If it's a tight, closed position knights gain strength, whereas if it's an open position bishops gain strength.

  • I bet GK never thought more than 5 seconds for any of his moves. Like taking candy from a baby.

  • playing as well as Sting is not an easy think... think of all the work needed to avoid the mistakes and beeing able to see what is really happening on a board... After all he played against a champion who makes no mistakes... Being a singer and playing so well is a great progress

  • I think sting should stick to being a musician

  • Good stuff

  • Thumbs up for your work from Finland!

  • Is the timing of white's e3 move important? Does it specifically prevent something? Thanks.

  • I know saying "I could beat this guy" is generic and probably untrue, but I just started playing this year and many of those blunder seemed pretty novice to me.

Maybe it was just the pressure?

  • In the beginning ,is Kasparov following the knights before bishop rule?By the way ,shouldn't the king knight on g1 move to e2 to stay out of the king bishop's way?

  • Hello Jerry, I watched quite a few of your videos, I have to say they're pretty good, to be honest, I'm learning a lot from your videos. I have started playing chess for like a month, I think it's an amazing challenge, at least as long as I still don't know the different major arrangement and strategies, so far I've been relying mostly on tactics. Would you mind telling me, how much of chess is knowledge/tactic/strategy/intelligence?

    cheers

    Mehdi

  • I wish Kasparov played like that against me in a simul...give me a break..Sting's rating based on that performance?..about 1500..

  • @johnnyzee383 I would think about 1600

  • Had some troubles with posting lengty comments. For some reason they are being denied. So I'm gonna keep this question short. Do you feel that there is any difference in online rating and club rating. Myself for example have always been higher in online rating. Cheers!

  • @Uffeman Yes. In person ratings are far more accurate.

  • 7:45 Not that "Sting" was really gonna beat Kasparov LOL

  • wow i could beat sting, and i mean literally beat him to death! lol jk.

  • Wow.... that bishop waz took outta play... haha... Gary really put the squeeze on him.... taking away all the squares'.....

  • this game is not very good cause Kasparov is much much much stronger than "that guy", anyway, i like it

  • Great video! Poor Sting, he made a lot of mistakes early on, then again he was playing against Kasparov.

  • Great video! Poor Sting, he made a lot of mistakes early on, then again he was playing against Kasparov.

  • lol. "...and this bishop is now officially a prisoner." Funny.

  • I remember this simul, it was in NY

  • Sting got stung!

  • every plan by sting is stopped by Kasparov!!!amazing:)

  • LOL I think that the fact that Sting thought he could defeat Kasparov is kind of funny.

  • @almoghh

I don't think he really thought he could beat him. Playing a match with Kasparov for a real chess fan (like Sting) is like an exhibition match with Mike Tyson for a boxing enthusiast. But less painful, of course.

Just a free lesson of how it should be done from a grandmaster and one of the greatest ever.

  • @DrSequoia Less painful ? Are you sure ? ;)

  • Yea, attack the defender. Nice!!

    Benson and Tonic

    myspace/bensonandtonicproductions

  • very very nice game. If I want to go from grade D to grade A, how many hours should spend daily studying chess games with books and online ? 2 to 3 hrs ?

  • Thanks Jerry for the explanation.

I am a beginner in chess (with high intelligence) . It is most educational to watch the best play with meaningful commentary .

Keep them coming . Once again, thanks.

  • lol the fact that it's sting makes me laugh for some reason

  • he might be 1400-1500 looks like

  • really nice video Jerry. I really taught my how important it is to take away squares for your oponents pieces. Sting really got squeased in. (profeleksis moves [not really sure about the spelling]) keep up the good work, you just gor another subscribe :D

  • hey jerry,i think you're better than sting=)

  • What is the ELO rate of Sting ? He seems quite strong ! :)

  • In 2:35 of the vid. you stated that bishops are better then knights. True in that particular position of the game, that bishop was very strong on that diagonal, and I myself prefer bishops more then knights. But, you should've stated in the vid that the rule only applies to open positions where bishops have long range effects on diagonals. Knights are considered equals to bishops in chess, perhaps better if the position is closed.Either piece can be better in any game if worked well with it.

  • Say, I think you are a better player than sting! LOL

If you a bit popular you could be playing Kasparov yourself :)

  • nicely done! both commentator and players =)

  • I would prefer it if you instead just played the opening moves without showing the obvious every time, and gave more of a general explanation of the main principles of the opening.

  • sting had to put on a red dress after losing, those were the terms.

  • Yo whats stings rating

  • @BdizzleFaReal judging from this game it may be around 1400

  • @BdizzleFaReal - You asked about Sting's Chess rating. He is listed with the USCF, but his membership expired in 2002, and he never played a rated game. If you go to the USCF ratings lookup page, you can search for SUMNER, GORDON and he will come up as GORDON STING SUMNER. Hope that helps. :P

  • Ya Kasparov crushed the other band mates like right away then it was just Sting left and the commentators were raving at how good Sting was doing before he finally trapped his own bishop. I believe they quoted (Wow, who's been training sting!)

  • @DionMarinos Ahh neat. I didn't know those details! =) thx.

  • I forgot about this game lol i watched it live on club kasparov :)

  • @DionMarinos HH cool ! =)

  • Hey!

What do you have in front of you when you comment those videos? I mean, do you have a sheet where all the variations are written or is it all known by heart?

By the way, your videos are great!

    1. What-ifs are perfect! That way, we understand why other moves aren't better than those that were actually played.

    2. All your comments about development are great too. Really helpful to understand how overtures work.

    3. Finally, your pronunciation is perfect for non-native english speakers.

  • @alexandreduf Hi. No sheet of notes. These game analysis videos usually take a few "takes" before being able to get everything covered successfully and under the 11-minute time constraint youtube has on my videos. Thanks for the many compliments. #3 was the first of it's kind. Thanks for taking the time to type such words. You're continued comments are appreciated. =) *handshake*

  • I would imagine if Sting and Kasparov were put head to head in a musical competition then the roles would be equally unbalanced :-)

  • @colster71 I think you're right! =)

  • Beautiful commenting! Very educational, especially (or perhaps even) for a novice like me.

  • Thank you. I appreciate the positive feedback. Thank you for the comment! =)

  • I really enjoyed your commentary, especially your explanation of the possible endgame. Surely Sting was destined to lose.

Very gratifying too are your concise descriptions e.g. the "one move threats by black that are easily stopped..."

I started playing only about 8 years ago it's taken me that long to learn to look for the move that makes two or more threats!!

Keep making more videos as they give me much enjoyment! : )

  • Great. Glad to hear of it. I appreciate the compliments. Please do continue to comment! =)

  • By the way, Kasparov was playing against Sting's entire band (5 opponents) simultaneously!

  • I did not know this. Thanks! =)

  • Great commenting, great pacing, great choice of placement for your what-ifs.

Other than that, how would you rate Sting as a chess player? Maybe that's a difficult question givne that he was vastly overmatched in this game, but I'm curious what you might think.

  • Thanks for the compliments. Not sure. Tough to judge from a single game. He knows the basics regarding development...knight..bishops out...and get castled. Was struggling during middlegame for a plan. d5 was a serious error. Really can't say what his strength is. I'd like to see Howard vs. Sting though. =)

  • Great commentary.

  • Thank you. I appreciate the compliment.

  • ah great that the videos are flowing in faster. i like the analysis of these games that i otherwise would not understand at all

  • Thanks so much for letting me know. DO continue to rate and comment! =)

  • Sting played a pretty respectable game for the most part. Better than I would have thought.

It seems like the position is fairly well balanced after Ne2 but black kind of loses the plot strategically and makes some silly mistakes to boot.

What kind of strategy would you employ as black in that position? Does retreating the knight to d8 and playing c6 aiming for a d5 push have any merit? Maybe Ne6 to follow looking at the d4 square.

And those blitz videos sound like great fun!

  • @padperson Yes, some pawn break was needed. Maybe and f7-f5 move was called for or possible the c6 and d5 moves like you pointed out.

  • Hey, I really like your videos about chess.

Could you maybe feature a video of you playing sometime? That'd be awesome :D

  • @PolTehPwnage Thanks for the compliment.

I'm anticipating doing some LIVE BLITZ very soon actually.

    Keep your eyes peeled. =)

  • Respect man I learned something new. Kool vid.

  • Great! Glad to hear it. I appreciate the time you took to make a comment. =)

  • thanks to you and your videos!!

i really learn something from it!!^^

  • Cool. My plan is working then! =)

  • this is cool !!!

    is kasparov russian or armenian

  • Not Armenian. =)

    Thanks for the comment/rating!

  • I really enjoyed this! Thank you. One question: at 7:40 you said "Black had already resigned at this point". Where did the remaining moves come from, were you just guessing what moves Black would have made?

  • No...I said that Black "could" already resign at this point meaning the position is beyond hopeless.

  • it did sound like the words were "had already resigned" to me too though. Just sayin

  • I listened to it and could see how it might be heard as such. Sorry for the confusion.

  • You have a wonderful commentator voice, and these videos are very helpful. thanks for posting them!

  • @DarkKar Thanks for the commentator comment.

    Glad to help. =)

  • Great video as usual. I didn't think it was "to" long at all. I really enjoy commentary.

  • Thanks for the compliment/rating. =)

  • Very informative and to the point, i enjoy these vids, please keep making more. :)

  • Thanks for the compliment/rating. =)

  • Another awesome video thanks for posting :)

  • Thanks for the compliment. =)

  • I really like your commentary man :) I am a good player and these videos still help me. Maybe just to reinforce things. Much appreciated <3

Btw, I don't think enough youtube chess people do videos on endgame!!

  • Thanks for the feedback/suggestion. =)

  • to long of a vid

  • Thanks for the feedback. Unfortunately doing an analysis of a chess game takes time. 10 minutes is actually quite brief for the analysis of an entire game.

Any suggestions on how exactly to shorten this game analysis?

  • how long does it take to become a chess master?

  • Depends. One must, at least in the United States, accumulate 2200 or more rating points.

  • Great commentary & Video.. Thanks for the post.. Keep making them..

  • Thanks for the kind words topshonuff. =)

  • Ok, no doubt about the result... but surprisinly Sting shows to be a very decent player

  • Yeah...it's neat to be able to get a feel for a player's strength just from a game played.

  • Graat man! I am here all the time!

My rate on fics is 1450, but this videos helps a lot!

  • Glad to help. =)

  • Thank you for the wonderful video! As always the moves were well explained ... keep up the good work.

  • Thanks nulfinator. =)

  • sting played with kasporov and got raped , i wish i could play with both of them .

  • I think many would like to play one or both of them. =)

  • Nice

  • Thanks for the comment/rating.

  • Enjoyed the commentary. Kasparov was really quite effective in battering down Sting's defenses.

  • Thanks for the compliment. Yes, he's good at that. =)

  • Man your videos are seriosuly clear, they make alot of sense thanks! 5/5

  • Thanks for the nice words striker865.

  • I'm surprised Sting played chess at all! And he did make a few bad mistakes but I was still mildly impressed by his play overall. He seemed like he knew some strats, at least marginally.

  • Thanks for the comment badmephisto. =)

  • your videos are the best man!

    thanks!

    5/5

  • Thanks for the compliment/rating R0drigue55 =)

  • What a fun analysis. I wish I could play as good as Sting.

  • Thank you. =)

  • You find some interesting games. Howard Stern and now Sting?

Also, your voice is very calm and clear. That's the way it should be - so many otherwise great players on YouTube are difficult to hear. Appreciated.

  • Thanks for the compliment/rating Mr. Axe! =)

  • hey chessnetwork... why not have a live commentary from other youtube chess players who post live commentary or analysis ^^

  • Maybe...=) Thanks for the suggestion.

  • Great stuff -- as always! I loved your clear analysis.

Heck, why does the game look so pure and all the moves appear so obvious when it's a master playing and another one commenting? ;)))

Also, it's great to hear celebs play chess! And not all that terribly either :))

Thumbs up, big time, for this one!

  • Thanks for the kind words barsorrro. They are appreciated.

  • You're great with these videos. Best chess videos on youtube. You should make videos more often! Maybe post more of your own games.

  • Thanks. That's a great compliment, especially coming from a genius! =)

  • kasparooovv :o

  • Now we need Paul McCartney vs. Kasparov....if Paul even plays chess

  • That's the next one on the agenda! =)

  • nice commentary! you should upload some games that you play online!

  • I might have to do that.

    Maybe LIVE games. =)

    Thanks for the suggestion/compliment.

  • Great video Jerry! 5/5

  • Thanks for the compliment/rating dude! =)

  • Can you play a game with jrobichess? He's the other chess commentator on youtube but you are much better of course!

I'd love to see this game!

  • Are you going to be the organizer for such a battle?! =)

    I'm open to a game.

    Thanks for the comment/rating.

  • yeh and he should play against greencastleblock too :D

  • And you're going to be the organizer for that one!? =)

  • There's many more than just jrobi and ChessNetwork. Kingscrusher, TheChessWebsite, Greencastleblock, Gunj17, SeanGGodley, GeniusProphecy, Me, jamesdd, vorojtsov, chessvideos, ChessQueen, Manju2006, ChessVideos, ChessLectures Just to name a few.
  • lovely how kasparov keeps the bishop trapped.

    nice clear commentary.

    thanks

  • Thank you for the compliment/rating spaghettionetime. =)

  • I'm sorry, but from the commentary posted in this video I find it very hard to believe that you are a national master.

  • You don't have to be sorry. At what playing strength do you believe I'm at? Thanks for the comment and I hope your day has been a good one. =)

  • The stronger a player is, the simplier they make chess appear!! ChessNetwork is clearly national master level. I'm around a 1950 player, and I appreciate his strength. Jerry your commentary is excellent, keep up the good work.

  • @BasicPawn My comment is in response to

    ponchojani comment

  • Thanks BasicPawn. Great name! =)

  • thanks for making video helps me alot :)

  • You're welcome. Thanks for the comment/rating.

  • so sting plays chess. Never knew that! Nice vid

  • Yes! Thanks for the compliment/rating sharkbait!

  • Well, I can't say I'm surprised by the result... I bet Howard Stern could have played better in this situation. Anyways, thanks for the interesting game and analysis. It's good that you are making more videos.

  • I'd like to see Sting vs Howard Stern! =)

I'm not surprised by the result either.

    Thanks for the compliment/rating! =)

  • very cool, never knew Sting played chess. Interesting game even though it was apparent who was going to win and the commentary was great. Glad I subscribed!

  • Great! Glad to have you as a subscriber. Thanks for the rating/compliment. =)

  • was kasparov opening weak? could sting have taken advantage of the center?

  • No, the opening is good. It's a King's Indian type setup. I doubt Sting could have taken advantage in any way in this game.

    Thanks for the rating/comment.

  • Really nice, Sting plays better than I thought he would.

  • Thanks for the rating/compliment TimeFreeze1. =)

  • Just a WAG, but is Sting around 1400 or so? Either way, this was a serious mismatch whether it was simul or not. :)

  • I agree. He had no chance. Thanks for the rating/comment. =)

  • good game!

  • Thanks for the rating/compliment. =)

  • Sting played Kasparov!?!?

    (Not watched video yet)

  • Okay, nothing surprising, Sting got steamed.

  • Yes he did!

    Thanks for the rating/comment. =)

  • Yes!

  • nice video

  • Thanks for the rating/compliment medra1980. =)
