Sting played like a patzer! Kasparov tried to make things easier for him by not playing any crazy opening. He could have finished Sting earlier if he really wanted to! Nice video! Thanks!
@G102Y5568 It depends on the position usually. At the beginning of a game their about equal, then their value increases/decreases depending on the position. If it's a tight, closed position knights gain strength, whereas if it's an open position bishops gain strength.
playing as well as Sting is not an easy think... think of all the work needed to avoid the mistakes and beeing able to see what is really happening on a board... After all he played against a champion who makes no mistakes... Being a singer and playing so well is a great progress
I know saying "I could beat this guy" is generic and probably untrue, but I just started playing this year and many of those blunder seemed pretty novice to me.
In the beginning ,is Kasparov following the knights before bishop rule?By the way ,shouldn't the king knight on g1 move to e2 to stay out of the king bishop's way?
Hello Jerry, I watched quite a few of your videos, I have to say they're pretty good, to be honest, I'm learning a lot from your videos. I have started playing chess for like a month, I think it's an amazing challenge, at least as long as I still don't know the different major arrangement and strategies, so far I've been relying mostly on tactics. Would you mind telling me, how much of chess is knowledge/tactic/strategy/intelligence?
Had some troubles with posting lengty comments. For some reason they are being denied. So I'm gonna keep this question short. Do you feel that there is any difference in online rating and club rating. Myself for example have always been higher in online rating. Cheers!
I don't think he really thought he could beat him. Playing a match with Kasparov for a real chess fan (like Sting) is like an exhibition match with Mike Tyson for a boxing enthusiast. But less painful, of course.
Just a free lesson of how it should be done from a grandmaster and one of the greatest ever.
very very nice game. If I want to go from grade D to grade A, how many hours should spend daily studying chess games with books and online ? 2 to 3 hrs ?
really nice video Jerry. I really taught my how important it is to take away squares for your oponents pieces. Sting really got squeased in. (profeleksis moves [not really sure about the spelling]) keep up the good work, you just gor another subscribe :D
In 2:35 of the vid. you stated that bishops are better then knights. True in that particular position of the game, that bishop was very strong on that diagonal, and I myself prefer bishops more then knights. But, you should've stated in the vid that the rule only applies to open positions where bishops have long range effects on diagonals. Knights are considered equals to bishops in chess, perhaps better if the position is closed.Either piece can be better in any game if worked well with it.
I would prefer it if you instead just played the opening moves without showing the obvious every time, and gave more of a general explanation of the main principles of the opening.
@BdizzleFaReal - You asked about Sting's Chess rating. He is listed with the USCF, but his membership expired in 2002, and he never played a rated game. If you go to the USCF ratings lookup page, you can search for SUMNER, GORDON and he will come up as GORDON STING SUMNER. Hope that helps. :P
Ya Kasparov crushed the other band mates like right away then it was just Sting left and the commentators were raving at how good Sting was doing before he finally trapped his own bishop. I believe they quoted (Wow, who's been training sting!)
What do you have in front of you when you comment those videos? I mean, do you have a sheet where all the variations are written or is it all known by heart?
By the way, your videos are great!

2. All your comments about development are great too. Really helpful to understand how overtures work.

@alexandreduf Hi. No sheet of notes. These game analysis videos usually take a few "takes" before being able to get everything covered successfully and under the 11-minute time constraint youtube has on my videos. Thanks for the many compliments. #3 was the first of it's kind. Thanks for taking the time to type such words. You're continued comments are appreciated. =) *handshake*
Great commenting, great pacing, great choice of placement for your what-ifs.
Other than that, how would you rate Sting as a chess player? Maybe that's a difficult question givne that he was vastly overmatched in this game, but I'm curious what you might think.
Thanks for the compliments. Not sure. Tough to judge from a single game. He knows the basics regarding development...knight..bishops out...and get castled. Was struggling during middlegame for a plan. d5 was a serious error. Really can't say what his strength is. I'd like to see Howard vs. Sting though. =)
Sting played a pretty respectable game for the most part. Better than I would have thought.
It seems like the position is fairly well balanced after Ne2 but black kind of loses the plot strategically and makes some silly mistakes to boot.
What kind of strategy would you employ as black in that position? Does retreating the knight to d8 and playing c6 aiming for a d5 push have any merit? Maybe Ne6 to follow looking at the d4 square.
I really enjoyed this! Thank you. One question: at 7:40 you said "Black had already resigned at this point". Where did the remaining moves come from, were you just guessing what moves Black would have made?
Thanks for the feedback. Unfortunately doing an analysis of a chess game takes time. 10 minutes is actually quite brief for the analysis of an entire game.
Any suggestions on how exactly to shorten this game analysis?
I'm surprised Sting played chess at all! And he did make a few bad mistakes but I was still mildly impressed by his play overall. He seemed like he knew some strats, at least marginally.

I didn't know that Bishops are generally considered to be more valuable than Knights. I always believed they were equally valued.
But I suppose Knights can be more valuable than Bishops as long as they're close to where they need to be, right?
