This is not recorded in Ulm, no never, Ulm was open air, this recording is made in a hall, whereever it is, but in spite of that it sounds fucking great
64 years old and still has a voice that after hearing, makes you feel as if you've been hit by a fuckin' train. And he's still built like one as well.
Why is everyone moaning about Daltrey? He's the best part of this rather workmanlike performance of the song. Townshend making mistakes around the three minute mark and making the guitar solos too technical completely ruins the feel of the song. The guy doing the acoustic guitar and backing vocals should stop singing. He's off-key, not Daltrey. Rog can carry the song on his own, and he does here.
Eh, I kinda have to disagree a little with such scathing criticism. I think Pete was just trying a few new things; they didn't work, and you don't see them in any of the later performances, so I think he figured that it was better to just work with the subdued musicality of the piece. Can't help getting into a groove with the guitar work, I know how that works all too well, heh.
No-one said anything about getting the same thing on stage as they hear on the record, exactly the same. You're assuming that's what people think, but in my case at least it certainly isn't.
I think a band doing things differently live is a great thing - if it works, and if it isn't the result of some terrible mistake.
The hardest thing is getting the right balance - change it too much and you lose the original motive, motif and groove. Too little and it's too much like the original record.
Roger once said that he'd go for a note even if he knew he couldn't hit it. That, my friends, is the true meaning of rock and roll, just giving the song every bit you could possibly give it. For those of you who say Roger's out of tune, I say the intensity that he gives this song more than makes up for it. For those who say EV is better, well, that's you opinion, but imo, there's no way. LLR-LLTW
Impresionante The Who,depues de mas de 40 años siguen con esa fuerza...deci q falta John Y kEITH SI no serian la potencia mundial!...discaso Quadrophenia.
i'm not really a fan of The Who, but i respect the hell out of them for everything they've done and no one can deny their legacy. i for one prefer the Pearl Jam version, but the original is great and this is a good video. i just wanted to respond to the stubborn old Who fans' comments... and i'm just comparing studio versions of the song from both bands. live performances are always different, too many variables to really judge, you just gotta enjoy
3, whoever said Eddie can't hold the notes long enough is out of their mind. Roger doesn't sustain the high note even on the studio version. Eddie, on the other hand, kills it. Eddie's voice is much more powerful on this song, and more moving.
Are you listening to the same studio version? Rogers voice is perfect and legendary through the whole quadrophenia album, I like Eddie Vedder and he is a good singer but he could never match Roger in his prime. I would like to see him sing some of the other songs on quadrophenia, i dont think people realize how high some of those songs are sung because Roger sings them almost effortlessly.
i agree, other songs had him singing well even higher. and when he would scream it was really powerful and like nothing else i've heard from that time. but, on this song, he didn't put much power into his performance, and when he did it was only for a second and then he'd bring the note down. Eddie sustains beautiful vocal power at the top of the note. it's just a more moving vocal performance to me.
Are you talking about this performance or the studio version? I dont really like this too much and Eddie sings it better than Roger does here, but hes like 60 here lol.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
no i mean the Who's studio version. compared to Pearl Jam's studio version. what Eddie lacks in range compared to Roger in his prime, he makes up for in power on this song. i also just think Eddie's voice plain sounds better, regardless of who's the better singer.
ok :) usually when it comes to judging people who are this talented it comes down to personnel preference I prefer Roger you prefer Eddie, but at least we can both see they are both talented.
Are you listening to the same studio version? Rogers voice is perfect and legendary through the whole quadrophenia album, I like Eddie Vedder and he is a good singer but he could never match Roger in his prime. 2, yes, Roger goes out of key here and there in the vid, a lot actually. perfectly common of a rock vocalist, don't worry about it. Vedder, as far as i can tell, doesn't do it as much, but that's just because he's younger.
1, it's not that hard a song to sing, it's just a matter of range. Pearl Jam tuned down half a step for their version. probably just their prefered tuning, it's not likely they did it for Eddie's voice, because after all it's only half a note difference.
Why does it have to be The Who vs Pearl Jam? They really like each other and both bands kick ass! Eddie would be tha last person to claim he does it better that Roger (even though I think Ed's voice is stronger)
no he doesn't.eddie isn't better at this song, and he can't do it perfect because eddie can't keep the notes long enough and doesn't have enough range in his voice
I agree that the original version of this song is the best. Though, i think pearl jam's version is way better than i expected. Vedder deffiently blew out his vocal chords and McCreedy's guitar playing sounds great.

Townshend has become such a hack, a joke of himself.
He overplays now, as if he's afraid he's going to be forgotten.
He's insecure about his music standing as it should.

you want a 'robotic' treatment every time?
You think everything should sound EXACTLY the same each night?
The JOY of seeing a band LIVE is that they do things a little differently each night and ALWAYS for the better!! (In My Opinion).
