U Srinivas is the dude! What a performance, what accompaniment. You sir, are inspiration. I keep coming back to this video - have probably seen it a hundred times or more.
Always amazing musicians, but I don't think the camera person understood the music. One example (of many): Shrinivas was playing amazing stuff & the camera was everywhere but his incredible hands playing beautifully.
I've noticed I cannot keep my head at all still when this song plays. Its like one of those magical tunes (for want of a better word) which makes your head move at least a little bit, even when I'm in public and trying really hard not to. And I love Ustad Zakir Hussain's expression as they get right into the most delicate sections of the song - a godly song by a godly band!
I am not Indian and nor do I speak Hindi or any of the ethnic languages of South Asia but I feel bliss and contentment when I listen to this. Makes me hum. Simple and clean. You can feel an african feel to this, as well. Thanks for posting!
this may be the 100th time i am visiting this page to listen to this, and i just don't get enough of this. words are short to explain the beauty of this piece.
this is one of the best pieces i have ever come across! amazing. an all genius event. just look at the co-ordination between them. it is a set of geniuses at work!! mind blowing stuff!
I know Giriraja Sudha is harder to sing so they're trying it but I would LOVE to hear them perform Raghuvamsa Sudha. There's nothing more beautiful than that.
This is one of the best live perfomances I have ever seen, the ambience , the artists and the sheer unision of excellent music takes this to celestial levels of bliss. I personally felt that Shankar Sirs voice was quite drowned by the mandolin and other instruments , they should have adjusted the output for his mic better. Take a look at Zikr saab at the portions, 5:30 to 5:48,6:08 to 6:21 and 6:27 to 6:31. He seems to be in trance just feeling the unity with the music. Amazing ...
just annoyed with the camera man who's only focusing on the faces rather than instruments when it is being played.. would have loved to see Zakir Hussain's magical fingers on the tabla or John's playing with the strings more often in the video..
Potentially the best rendition i've seen post Nithyashree Mahadevan's version on the Explosions - I CD. I love how the guitar and the Tabla change the mood of the track.. and oh, the chord progression of John, man... how can this be possible? wow!
Ya khudaaa.......what bliss is that I feeel.......mere words cannot explain....Wish with all my heart that I am born as a musician atleast in my next birth ..
@allsfieldsreq...a friend works as ustad's zakir hussian's event management team...she said that the drum is custom made...designed by him so he can fuse tabla and drums at his performances together. It's the same as drum only suits to someone sitting on the ground...as one has to when playing the tabla
sounds that made me pass my graduation..Sounds that made me believe in my own jazz and become what ever i was...and live the nobody that i was blissfully...sounds that made me believe beyond roger waters david coverdale and jimmy page....the sounds that took me to miles and robert johnson..and beat poets..Thanks John ..thanks for eveything
He is definitely a properly trained singer ~ and I would love to hear this joker below sing, come on post something, anything before making absurd claims ~ I have ; )
bma852, when you post such derogatory words on such beautiful music/video it reflects very poorly on you. Easy on the profanity although I'm glad your enthusiastic about the music.
Love the vocals, nice seeing the one singing those vocal, Shankar truly is fantastic, again my tablas, the guitar, percussion, and the mandolin truly a fun piece to begin your work day. I was so thrilled and hated to have it end. Thank you for sharing bazonics, a great choice. Pease and Love!! : -) Namaste!!:)
This is a heavenly song orginally composed by Saint Thyagaraja in "bangala" ragaam and adhi tala. A great fusion with mastreos like Zakir, John, U Srinivas, Selva and Shanker.
I was sitting and making some notes for my software project, browsing the youtube in background...and I was just stuck leaving everything with the synchrony of these awsome guys..John, Zakir are beyond imagination..salute to you guys..
Naaa!!! They are all bound in their quest for musical perfection. That's why the group is so diverse. Not the the feckin' Black with their rap etc etc etc. Pagan Spudless Fuckers they are!!! Yo!!!
The title should be giriraja sutha not sudha. I attended one of the remember shakti concerts recently, all of them are amazing except Shankar Mahadevan, his shouting doesn't suit Carnatic music, he is good only with filmy stuff . Everyone else in the group is a genius!
i have heard Balamuralikrishna shouting. Now what? i can give u the link as well. If u r a great singer why dont u upload ur videos. I will subscribe for sure. By the way Shankar is best at what he is doing. May be u r just a cry baby knowing the fact that shankar is influenced wiith Pt Bhimsen Joshi who hails from Gwalior Gharna. Is it ur jealousy which is speaking?
LOL @ you to compare both of them and also to think Shankar Mahadevan is the messiah of Carnatic music. Why should I be jealous of Shankar's training from Pt.Joshi. Dont resort to personal attacks if you dont have anything else to say.
its not me who is comparing. its u who is criticizing. Or may be u r as great as Bharat Ratna Balamuralikrishna or some other carnatic music great. Is it so??Nothing personal anyways.
Who cares about Himesh Reshammiya, I cannot care less for his singing. Regarding Shankar, his singing lacks manodharma, one of the main ingredients of carnatic music and also, he cannot do any alapanai and he tries to compete with Shrinivas' speed. Shrinivas, the genius he is, can of course deliver both speed and accuracy and Shankar is no Shrinivas!!!
Asha, Lata and Ismail darbar have themselves personally said shankar is brilliant.
Im not classically trained like u r. But this is the 1st time in my life that ive seen sum1 talk like that abt shankar. im not saying u admire him coz others do.
But ive liked him for a LOTTT of songs and also LATA and ASHA have great words to say.
I like hariharan, srinivas, vijay prakash, vijay yesudas n some others.
Shankar Mahadevan is one singer who performs with complete soul. As far as Carnatic music is conerned, he is a professional Carnatic singer. Dont compare him with Balamuralikrishna. Not everyone can be him. What shankar has done for the industry is enough. He has taken Carnatic music to new heights, else your so called Carnatic music would have been restricted to SOUTH INDIA only. Hails Shankar. Jai Bharat
You Say "Shankar Mahadevan has taken carnatic music to new heights", Seriously, do you even have a clue of what you are saying?? And oh yeah just before you say yes, "justify" what you just said!!
Ofcourse yes. Carnatic music was restricted to South India, say thanks to shankar that he re-moulded carnatic sangeet in a manner so that everyone started loving it. Nusrat did the same to Qawwalis.

Of course I know about Shakti's existence from 70s. Do you realize they are playing a carnatic song in this video? There are a lot of carnatic singers who will do more justice than Shankar Mahadevan. His pronounciation of the Sanskrit words is just killing the song. Just because you are Ustad's Shagird doesn't give you the right to name calling. Watch what you say.
Dude ~ not only am i his shagird I also am a professional musician. And Joker is not name calling Silly Man ; ) Lighten up ~ just because you have no clue what you are speaking of don't blame me. Yes of course, John and Zakir-Ji obviously do not know what they are doing when they made this choice. You are Silly. That is not a bad word
Of course I know what I am saying. I even gave the reason in my response. I cannot comment on why John and Zakir chose Shankar, but, I feel this group would be much better without Shankar Mahadevan. His style of singing has a lot of filmy influence in it. Its not just me, there are some others who have commented the same. You should have known it, u moron (Just to lighten up things!!) :D
He is not a permanent member sir... Also Joker and Moron are not the same. Moron is a true insult, Joker is funny. Hey next time I will be sure to ask Zakir-ji to ask your opinion okay?

Out of tune is overused. What does out of tune mean? A little out of tuneness at times brings creativity and a full ness. Specially if you know what you are doing.
indian classical music teaches about embellishment or in simpler terms playing/singing a note a micro tone out of pitch to further colour a single note.
Great...really great..no words to say...Amazing performance..i cont type properly bcos drops are coming out from my eyes....thankyou shankarji, zakirji, and johnji...u r all really great..
Shankar's singing takes me to a much better place..Thanks Shankar Mahadevan...I love this music made by the consumate masters of music on this planet!
It's one of the greatest pleasures to watch and hear Shakti in concert. Thanks for sharing this sort of videos. Nothing more inspiring and moving than this sounds from the heart.
Awesome music, simply awesome. I saw this lineup perform in Kuala Lumpur. They are amongst the greatest musicians on this planet. The interplay between discipline and total abandonement is of the highest levels.
Spectacular !!

Nice, but the vocal is quite out of tune at times in beginning

Out of tune is overused. What does out of tune mean? A little out of tuneness at times brings creativity and a full ness. Specially if you know what you are doing.

indian classical music teaches about embellishment or in simpler terms playing/singing a note a micro tone out of pitch to further colour a single note.

@mehfil3 This is not Raag Hansdhwani.. it is a raaga called Bangala . It is a child raaga (janya) of Dheera-sankarabharna.

Awesome music, simply awesome. I saw this lineup perform in Kuala Lumpur. They are amongst the greatest musicians on this planet. The interplay between discipline and total abandonement is of the highest levels.
