have you heard The Fire of Eternal Glory? It is an incredibly famous song he wrote that is played constantly at the Stalingrad memorial in Russia from WW2. It is a slower piece, but it is played very often by professional symphonies and the Phantom Regiment had it in their show once. I love it.
@achillesian yes, over the past two years i've come to appreciate more and more of shostakovich, but it takes a while to appreciate his music. I would say that this is one of the more palatable shostakovich pieces for someone who has never heard his music.
