  • 何と老練なんだ、とても素晴らしい。名手だ、素晴らしい、将来が楽しみです。

  • that woman is so large that she turned the cello to its side and played it as a viola

  • i don't like her sound very much

  • @finconnaiseur111 you play violin? If you play the violin so I do not understand the problem of hate this I am 12 years old and I play violin for seven eyears now and I study music for 10 years

    And this is magnificent

  • sarasate always has the most crazy entertaining and fun pieces :o

  • wow,i want to play perfect,but noow i play bad,thanks,you a re very ,very good,perfect,azerbaycan

  • I got to see her play at my university :)

  • great performance..

  • Go figure...

  • last movement is an absolute bitch to play. just want to hang myself after trying to do those double stops :| lol

  • Dont hang yourself its bad technique :) practice them sounding only one note at a time, at a very slow speed where you can play every note in tune. then put them together and speed up one notch at a time on a metronome. Be patient you wont learn it in one day :)

  • @Violincrazy I don't feel like Midori or Sarah Chang EVER played one note at a time on a low speed to the metronome.. They popped out the womb with their fingers flying over the neck of the violin. And for we mere mortals it's just so discouraging having to play one note at a time, and then watch these videos and know that we'll never get there. My name is Negative Nancy.

  • @heathersvan It's actually counter-intuitive. When you can play it slowly, you can do it easily faster

  • Bowing at 2.24 As the Harmonics begin the bow tilts away to give a narrow hair contact and a purer tone . All carefully thought out stuff.

  • AHH i love when she does the kiss motion to bernstein and he does it back!! epic

  • great birthday present

  • wooow she was 17 back then! very very nice

  • Amazing !!!!! So clear and beautiful !!! The best performance of "Carmen" I've ever heard !!!

  • lol she came to our high school and conducted our orchestra last year...she's so old now

  • she over does the movements

  • No standing ovation?! Wtf.

  • He performance is incredible but the orchestra is quite lacking. So often the other musicians are out of tempo, namely the percussions near the end.

  • She's so tiny, it looks like a viola!

  • 小澤さんの踊るような指揮は初めて観ました。みどりさんの最後、投げキッスのやり取りがとても微笑ましいです。

  • Wow she's so talented; that was some fast playing!! And I loved watching the conductor too, he was like almost flying there haha very very into it!

  • WOW.

I have never seen such a young violinist as talented as she is.

    She's genious!

Does anyone know what kind of vibrato she has ?

( Wrist or arm.), please !

  • @SolangeMGMahoney

    Wrist vibrato.

  • @MultiMelon12

    thnx :)

  • For a minute I thought she was playing a viola. hahahah

  • oh, but i like itzhak perlman's version a lot better than this one...oh well ! they can all play a gajillion times better than me haha

  • honestly, i like midori's version better than sarah chang..sometimes i think sarah chang plays too rough? idk how to explain, just not light and sweet enough. but things like shostakovich, she can play very well.

  • @vivl0x0ian3 I don't get why people like you always compare things like this with others. They both are amazing, and have great talent that suits their style. But I do agree that Midori is better suited for pieces like this. But don't insult Sarah, because she does her best, too.

  • @hmblah wth, people like me? theres nothing wrong with comparing. it's not like im saying sarah chang or midori SUCK or that sarah chang doesn't do her best. All of them are great violinists. i just prefer different versions...jeez

  • Wooooooooow.... i have never heard violin played like that.... Im more of a piano guy, but this was simply mesmerizing!!!

  • While Midori is an incredible force of nature, Sarah Chang plays as if possessed by an otherworldly spirit in this piece.

  • YouTube the Great Great Grandfather in Composition of Peter I. Tchaikovsky:

    Iosif Andriasov

  • when did it take place? how old was she?

  • 2:27 and beyond is harmonics on the strings. I remember watching this in 1998, at Lenny's 70th "birthday bash". He absolutely adored Midori.

  • how old is she there??

  • Sorry guys, but Gil Shaham owns this piece.

  • @agw87 Precisely, I agree, the best interpretation of the piece is held by Gil Shaham. No offense, Sarah Chang.

This performance is a bit bland for me.. it is still wonderful Wonderful WONDERFUL but I like a little more fire.

  • @Mecinimi Gil Shaham sounds rushed and and careless to me. It's not enough to look happy while playing, the notes have to be there. About her sound, keep in mind that microphones play a big part in this. I've been recorded by bad microphones and it was dreadful.

  • a verygood violinist,excellent performance.i very enjoyable!!

  • she moves soo much...no homo lol

  • very good!!!!

  • code is not clear

  • I don't know anything about violin but is that technique at 2:27 what you call flageolet tones? She seems to be very adept at those. Are the hard to execute? Thanks in advance.

  • @efzt artifical harmonics...yes, very hard to execute and be in tune.

  • So sweet and so delicate, so refined it's like a warm and passionate love affair with this wondrously intricate and enticing fantasie.

  • I said bravo bravo bravo again along with the crowds noticably unanimous abrupt appraisal distinguishing this performance a notch above so many other great performances where the reaction from the crowd may be there, but not quite comparable to this one. Can anyone find any thing critical to say of this blessed Midori's performance of Carmen Fantasie?

  • @SsteinwayS Please tell me you're not serious. Is she supposed to sound unrehearsed? Is she supposed to feign sloppiness just to please snobby listeners like you who ejaculate idiocy and think it intellectual?

  • すごい躍動感!すばらしい。

  • as she finished i was saying bravo bravo aloud as she finished i knew i had found a new elite. she is just unbelievable. i have never hear violin played like that before. wow wow wow wow and wow. bravo!!

  • amazing amazing amazing, so amazing. she is the cleanest player i've ever heard in ways. wow.

  • sarah sucks compared to her. how could you like sarah chang better. this is so much more.

  • My orchestra just accompanied her playing Mendelssohn Violin Concerto and she is amazing!!!!! And she is so nice!!!

  • i like sarah chang better. I think if midori had a better violin she would sound better. She plays well, dont get me wrong but her violin has no resonance.

  • This is a live performance, lacking audio enhancement. The sarah chang version on yt is professionally recorded, obviously seen by the changing backgrounds, that made me dizzy :PP

  • and, sarah chang plays her detache a little un clean.

    too many scratches.

  • I think it's because of her violin, which a Baroque one...

  • @SsteinwayS Well, no wonder she consistently has trouble with the top notes...her violin is Baroque! Maybe she should get it fixed :)

  • @Elainelps0421 hehe...I think the Baroque violin she uses has a gorrrgeeous sound...but she decides to push it to its limits in the Romantic repertoire (and even in Shostakovich!!) is quite beyond me :O

  • @iamemod They are all good...but I think Leila Josefowicz owns them all:)

  • Rocked it! Atta girl!

  • she's fantastic....but there's a small problem....she doesn't feel the music!i mean she doesn't dance the music well!u know what i mean?...btw they forgot a piece from it you can hear gil shaham playing it...but she is absolutely fantastic!

  • A godess.

  • awkward movement

  • why don't my thirds sound as good as hers

    =P

    What a great player!

  • very good

  • Truly magnificent.

  • btw this is not the best of midori's carmen. her other video of carmen is better than this one. this one is kinda okay. it's not strong enough and doesn't have that much tone into it.

  • Lucky you! I think that I can see this this very clearly from this video, that Midoris double jointedness gets her everywhere with ease. of course she had to practice also, but just look at it! How can someone move so easily without her particular physique? I've watched many great violinists on youtubes.

  • She has lost several times her connection with the orchestra, playing faster. Of course a great performer but I like sarah chang technique and precision better

  • That's true but Midori is good too. but i like sarah chang better too

  • She seems to have double joints in all her fingers (left hand). I used to think this was a kind of weak hand, not ideal for the violin.

But this video (e.g. at 6:16) makes me wonder if the opposite is the case. (not only slightly, but very much so!) Any experts please?

  • Mmmm... I don't really think there that one perfect form of hands for the Violin... there is an advantage and disadvantage for every different kind of hand... I think what makes a good player is how he/she adapts to his own hand and balance it's own advantages and disadvanteges... Sarah Chang for example has very short fingers and small hands, but she plays good

  • Hmm not even the full version... did it cut out the Habanera?

  • HAHA~dont know why, girls always quite good at carmen or phantom of opera~

  • i don't know why, this verison of mordori doesn't have much sound to it. it sounds really quiet.

  • I worry about the fiddle here - it's the 'ex-Gibson' 'ex Hubermann' 'ex-Ricci' del Gesu' of 1734. An instrument with a truly massive tone. My question is has Midori the strength to bring it out?

  • so is her violin bad, is that what you're saying. well it's the same violin that sarah uses it too.

  • I believe Midori can, she is a amazing player just like sarah chang. she can bring out the beautiful tone of it. just watch her play the prokofiev concerto no. 2 it's amazing. Her tone is absolutely beautiful mostly the third movement it's so powerful.

  • In this video, she played the Jupiter Strad. She started to play the 1734 Del Gesu from about 10 years ago.

  • well this performance was a long time ago, im sure shes matured enough to use her del gesu to its full potential

  • does ProudKoreanGuy know that its Seiji Ozawa conducting? If not, then its evident that he's ignorant. if he does know, he still has no idea what he's talking about.

  • She play just like it's part of her body, very pleasure to watch and listen.

  • okay

  • best.

  • ah i wish i could ever play this piece...

  • yup!!! agree with firebreathone2

  • I think it is a good performance. She manages to convey the emotions whilst demonstrating her cogent technical skills

  • Mr. Bernstein looks very happy.

And how could he not? To be bequeathed with such excelent performance on your birthday...

  • ezt a szégyent....:)

  • im in love with her violin

  • she let me puck a string on the 1734 Gesu when I met her!!!!! It's definitely one the highlights of my life!!!!

  • Astonishing....so young and so virtuoso @_@

I begin to become excited, because in 10 days I'll play (in orchestra) with her, the Mendelssohn concert....Wow, I wonder what an experience for me....

  • How did you feel to play with her?

  • Of course she was great! She's a little person (she's 37 now) but very determined. And she plays very softly, we had always to play piano to not overcome her...but she has a lot of musicality!

  • Thank you for reply.

I feel she is very determined as you did when I am watchnig her playing movie.

  • i think she was 17

  • What a treasure!

  • Awesome talent

  • what's the name of the conductor again?

  • SEIJI OZAWA.

  • sorry, this was the answer to violinova.

  • Seattle Symphony orchestra?

  • how was she when she did this? she looks a lot younger than she is now

  • 15.

  • aww... she was a cutie :-)

  • bravo

  • her bow seems huge to me for some reason.

  • woah she looks so young how old is she in this performance?

  • Thanks for posting this! What year was this recorded?

  • too bad that she skips the 1st, 2nd mvt.

  • those two movements are the easiest, so there's no need to play kids' movements

  • i disagree. even though they're easier than other mvts, you need to play them in order to complete the carmen. if you don't need to play the easier movements, why do players play the 2nd mvts of concertos?

  • I second that. :D

  • Ok, i would agree with that. But, i must say, 2nd movements have a different type of diffculty. Especially in romantic music, like say bruch violin concerto or mendelssohn.

  • I agree. Why must everything be "DIFFICULT". This piece was written as a violin showpiece, certainly, but it was also written to bring the fabulous music of Bizet to a wider audience.

  • Hah you think Meditation is easy??

Sure it's easy to play; I had it memorized within a day. But I practiced it for 3 years under the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra concert master until I finally got bored and gave up. It's an easy piece to play but NOT an easy piece to master.

You're right that difficulty is the essence, but only insofar as that pieces which have strong genuine intent by the composer are noteworthy, and incidentally, understanding this intent is often as difficult as it is deep.

  • Comment removed

  • Don't agree.

  • I take it you can play the Meditation on a violin held behind your back.

  • I hope you don't play any instruments yourself, because you really shouldn't with that attitude.

  • amazing!

  • in der tat..... verdammt gut

  • Thanks!
