  • dude, you make the harmonica look cool as fuck!!!!

  • Hungarian Gypsy Scale, fantastic : )

  • the second scale sounds like a phrygian scale with a raised third. don't know what its name is though.

  • jeson .. I played guitar few years. A beginner in harmonica. I bought a 'Hohner silber star' just to find that its the cheapest and not suitable for the beginners (As found in net ). But i live in kolkata, India .. And found no better 10 hole diatonic in my city !!

    I wanna know ..

    1) Should I buy a more expensive 10 hole diatonic online before I begin, or I may stick to it untill I learn to play one note at a time?

    2) Can I learn note bending in Silver star?

  • 4:24 that's AWESOME DUDE asian blues!

  • Jason write a book! ;D

  • this absolutely blows my mind, i've never heard theses scales on a harmonica -- its like seeing a new color, its hard to phathom

  • I got my first 4 then 6 OB watching this video few months ago.

Now watching it again i can follow you,(the scales not the impros!)

measuring my work and progress i want to say thanks again: you're great inspiration to me.

By the way, i just bought my first Golden Melody this week, i fell in love with it instantly and it's already improving my beginner playing.

Thank you so much, i won't miss your next gig in belgium in May!

  • dude that all sound fucking awesome

  • now what?

  • You are truly an inspiration. What key harp are you using?

  • very impressive I'm going to see this man perform twice this coming week in Boulder

  • jason I listened really carefully on the last lesson and I think I understood everything all I have to say is WHAT?

no matter you are PURE inspiration. You are priceless

  • minor chords rule. Like nails.;)

  • Yes they do but not worth the price of fixation...like nails...But you rule any way you look at it.

Love you bro...miss you...BTW I need some seydel reed bolts and screws BAD! Can u mail me some on the road I'll paypal u.

    J

  • Give me a call when you get a chance and we'll figure out the wheres and whens.

  • YOU ARE SO GOOD

  • You know that minor scale at the end. The one with the tricky overblow. You can also add the four draw before the 4 overblow to make the classical "harmonic minor" scale.

  • This is still my favourite of your videos... I just love that middle easter stuff it's amazing. How do you you do that flutter tremolo flutterry thing? Are you just bending really fast? I can't seem to do it. It sounds amazing.

  • As a decent guitar player myself, who plays Harmonica as an additional instrument, Jason has inspired and taught me through his YouTube videos just how expressive the Harp can be. He is the Jimmy Page of the Harmonica world.

JR, you deliver more than most of us ever will. If we take only 1% from such tuition, it is still so inspirational. Huge thanks.

  • Thanks again for all the support here! I admire Page a lot and were both huge Croley fans too.

  • Alistair Crowley...ahhhh....

  • ahhh...what? Aleister Crowley rule. Read the books, he's not what they tell you he is. The crazy videos here on youtube are ridiculously unfair and much more evil with there motives than anything they said Crowley ever did.

  • I meant....

     Alistair Crowley.....ahhhh,

now I understand where you are coming from !

    Not

    Alistair Crowley ...ahhhh...that stuff !

  • the master,..hands down

  • OMG!! is this for real?!? this guy is gettin sounds outa that thing i never new existed!!! ....you must have to learn how to charm your tongue to play that one!!

  • Yes! I love that term "charm your tongue" Ha! That rules and thats exactly what you have to do.

  • 4 5 6 draw is a minor triad.on a c harp thats d minor

  • YES I figured that out shortly after making this video, I updated it in a newer video maybe a year ago? about minor vs richter tuned harps...but thanks for pointing that out here!

  • your off the scale guy,,,,tremendous ,,whats that harp by the way? cheers from uk

  • Wow dude, that was f**king mental. The little egyption style solo you did blew me away. I have played guitar for 12 years & I never once picked a Harmonica up. I am going out to buy one today.

  • the first is called ( Nihavend or نهاوند )

the Second is called ( Hicazkar حجاز كار )

  • How do you bend if you're tongue blocking, and putting your tongue toward the back of yer mouth?

  • WHey Arc Try using the back of your throat...Keeo at it you'll get it it took me a while too.

    J

  • I'm gonna keep at it, but my Huang...um, busted. Are you using a Golden Melody in this vid? If so, this is my next harp!

  • hey! JASON This is wonderful, I really charming with error included,

do not speak or write in English nor understand it but what is music

has no boundaries, I'd really like to know how you got to play harmonica

for an idea which may lead reach the level that you got to run and

improvise. back to tell you're a monster of the harmonica .. many greetings

    from Argentina .... The TANHO

We wrote through a translator so I can not be very understandable.

  • Wow! That's really something.

  • THe gypsy minor one is called Phrygian dominant its a harmonic minor mode, but iv never hear any thing like that on a harmonica mate you have opened my eyes to the harmonica being played in a less cliched manner plus that is my favourite scale on guitar thank you for your insight and ownage.

  • awesome man!

  • this is awesome, but i can't bend at all. did you do any vids on bending for absolutely dumb newbies? cause i think i'm a part of that crowd and i'd appreciate it xD

  • you just have to experiment with moving your tongue around. start on 4th hole draw then work onto 3rd hole draw. just bring your tongue back into your mouth. it comes with practice haha it took me a while as well!

  • thanx mate. i kinda can bend with my lips (weird ain't it =)), i just change the angle of how i hold the harmonica, but it's surely the wrong way =)

gonna experiment with tongue position! thanks for that tip!

  • dude ur really good

  • Great stuff. What do you think of trying Tango? Do you like Joe Powers?

  • im talikng about round midnight

you are a real great player by the way

  • because the beginning is in 2nd pos

GCDG Eb and the Eb is the minor sixth related to the root

  • in fact you know what that general scale is just brilliant. I'm just gonna have to steal all your ideas I'm afraid......

  • that thing you mentioned with the major 3rd there- I use that when playing acoustic guitar all the time. like 1st flattenned 2nd then major 3rd. It's nice someone else thinks it's as cool as I do.

  • YOu should study maqams (arabic scales)

  • Your right I should! And will! Thank you sir!

    J

  • That's absolutely unreal. I'm new to youtube, so I'm clicking through lots of yours and ronnie's videos.

Almost chilling, I've never heard that sound come from a harp before.

  • "Um...Chris, but it sounds like shit" LOL!!

I will never forget our very first conversation on the phone when I was into doing octave bends.

  • wow i love that Middle Eastern scale -

  • I believe you were playing a harmonic minor. In melodic minor you will raise the 7th on the way up and then on the way down you do a minor 7th. And the Egyptian scale you mention is the phyrigian mode. Its great because it has a minor second. Nice playing though

  • actually the melodic scale would have a raised 6th and 7th and on the way back it becomes a natural minor scale

  • another comment: I notice that egyptian scale you talk about is much easier (for me)on the upper octave b/c you can avoid that hard 3 bend and the 4ob!! Thanks you for the scale.

  • Jason, i love the theory, you should do more like these. I was wondering if you use these scales in any of your youtube vids or cd's so I can hear them used over a band

  • Your vids are fantastic Jason, thanks for sharing the knowledge!

  • Oh My Gosh!

  • That improv was fuckin amazing!!

  • that first part in the video when you hit those two notes together, to get that blues vibe, that reminded me of a song made by led zeppelin, "when the levees break".

  • its when the levee breaks, not levees break

  • Awesome stuff! Making me want to get a Golden Melody for OB.

I manage to using tongue blocking with one side bend and release the other side. However I haven't got my way of using this technic.

  • wow man i thought harmonica was just blowing and sucking, dang man

  • This is me after two months of growing in playing the harp. Damn, the one with bending 2 and getting playing the five together is my next goal. WOW, playing splits with tongue blocking is difficult enough then adding the bend! I can get the bends and blowbends pretty well. Now I understand the implications more now then when you put this originally up. Shows good to replay these lessons as don't outgrow them. Thanks doc dc

  • That sounds very sweet Jason. How realistic is this sort of thing on an uncustomised harp though? You've got such an amazing touch on those overblows, it's just astonishing. I'd love a detailed lesson on overblow technique so that I can start nailing those suckers every time I reach for them.

    Anyway. Again, wow.

  • Hey adam Thanks for writing! as long as your at least gapping the reeds you should be off to a great start...i didn't start using cusom harps really untillast year...i have done my own work mostly just gapping for years and I was overblowing before even gapping. Thanks so much!

    J

  • Wow these video's are so awesome. Wish I could play like that :P.

i have to say i really like the dorian scale and the round midnight sound

  • Totally! Those scales are so ominous, regal and mysterious!

  • Hi Jason.

Thanx so much for the videos.

I am a guitarist just started to learn on harmonica.

    First - You rock!!!!!!!!!!!!11

Second - The second scale you played

is actually a C Harmonic Minor.

so it's an Harmonic Minor and it is really used alot in Egyptian and Gypsey music.

    Thanx for the videos,and again...

    your playing rocks!!!!!!!!!11

    keep it coming...

  • The C Harmonic Minor Scale that begins from G,that means it's a G Harmonic Phyrigian (which is actually a C harmonic Minor satrting form G ) :).

  • Wow! Thanks for the help and the contributions! these are the best type of comments so I can learn too! THANK YOU!

    J

  • THANKX 4 THAT, JR !now here comes my silly question of the day : Do you play stock minor keys AND have you ever considered having a minor harp custumized for OB's ?

  • Harmonimonster Just read the responce below ...No such thing as a stupid question...I would probably not order a minor tuned harp unless to play chords on....

  • As always- great lesson. Do you often play minor tuned harps? I would love to see a lesson on the differences between natural minor, melodic minor and harmonic minor harps. By the way- have you ever thought of setting up a paypal 'donate' button? people could express apreciation with a tip if they liked. Anyway- many many thanks.

  • Dear Venger. Thanks for watching...I dont play Minor tuned harps so far. I actually don't own one. They are great for chords but I don't need them for anything else so far. As far as Pay pal these lessons are free! and will stay Free forever the only thing I ask is that you all go watch the you tube videoes of MY BAND! Cone see the Band and if you like attend one of my actual real life instructional seminars!

    Thanks for watching!

    J

  • I really appreciate the lessons that you've posted, Jason. Both masterful and mortal. I could (and will) study this one video for hours. Thanks.

If you're surfing around for some new harp music check out my band "cccome?". Although the catoriztion wasn't one of the available myspace choices, we call it "Harmonicore". myspace com/cccome

  • Thanks HD! I appreciate the kind words and I'll check out your myspace page when I get a better internet connection (Hotel)

  • getting all middle eastern on that damn harp. nice.

  • yeah, it's a little tough getting the 4 ob to the 5 ob, but i'm still working on my overbending. the only set up i've got is gapping cause i'm a little in the dark on other mods. a lot of time i'll do blues in third though, because the phrygian dominant come much more naturally in second pos.

  • Hey Jason, thanks for all these vids.

The first scale in this one is natural minor or aeolian. In G (if that harp you have there is a C):

    G A Bb C D Eb F G

    ...

  • The second one is sometimes called Spanish Phrygian (5th mode of C harmonic minor):

    G Ab B C D Eb F G,

although if you mention the term Spanish Phrygian to jazz guys, they will often think of it with an additional minor 3rd - to give G Ab Bb B C D Eb F G.

Sorry about the theory talk! It's the playing that counts of course, and that sounds great what you're doing there...

    Eugene

  • Wow cool noone ever knows that one! I've asked about that one a bunch of times! Thanks adain.

    J

  • Wow cool noone ever knows that one! I've asked about that one a bunch of times! Thanks again.

  • Hi Jason & Eugene, in the context it's used here - oriental sounding - it's called Hiçaz in Greek & Turkish music (pron. Heechaz)

Great idea to put these videos up - gotta love you for it :-)

  • Hey Ludo! Hope to see you soon thanks for the informative comment!

  • Thank you!!! I love knowing this now!

  • haha, yeah it's one of my favorites too, i had never heard anyone other than me play phrygian dominant on harp before you, and granted you blew me out of the water with it, but i've now got incentive to keep working it. just try over the five chord in a 12 bar sometime. it's an interesting way to incoporate the major 7th (as the third on the five chord)

  • Oh yeah I never tried that before...I often use the 2 bend half step and the 5 over blow in third but i never thought of going all Spanish Phrigian in Cross on the 5 chord before or of even using that mode in 3rd! Great advice I'll try it next time I hit the road! thanks!

    J

  • Great Work Jason masterfull, I know now what it reminds me of, some Egyptian Tune 8-)

  • Thanks kenneth!!!!

  • Dear Johnnie I primarily a Lip Purser...But I'm really an advocate for both because they both have advantages and weekneses,,,When I am t.b.ing I play out of the right side most all the time...

    Thanks!

    j

  • Very interesting. Great lesson, Jason! Clearly described and demonstrated. Thank you. Do you primarily use tongue block when playing rather than lip pursing and when tongue blocking, do you usually play single notes from the left side of your mouth rather than the right? Thanks. JH

  • Dude! That's impressive! I saw Carlos del Junco doing that type of octave playing here in Boise and it blew me away then. Still does.

Reminds me a lot of Lee Oscar's minor scale work on his first solo album. (Self titled?) However, he used alternate tuned harps!

Fantastic tonal control - Simply amazing!

    -Thanks for sharing and...

    Jam On!

    -BB

  • Fantastic,Jason.I will have to watch this many times to digest it...Mike Hardy.,Pat Ramsey Fan Club..
