The point was not to be practical but to show that you should do techniques with your body weight. If you can manage to improve your skill on that level you will be much better and your skill will be much better when doing practical things. Doing "real" situations it's not possible on training and it can be done only on street. The point of the training is to prepare you for that. It's like boxers skipping rope. You won't skip rope in the ring but that will prepare your movement.
