  • So, basically... you did the same thing every single otaku on YouTube does?

  • YES!! This is ssoooo helpful! The tip where learning from guys and not really from girls seems extremely helpful.

    Ssssweeet...

  • I know from experience this is very good advice indeed, although it's not easy!

  • 日本語を勉強しましたけどよく話せません。書くことはむずかしいも。i've been seriously studying japanese for about 4 months now, but i have watched nothing but anime(eng sub) and listened to practically nothing but japanese music for 2 years. sadly the game that i had been using to learn japanese got me to about the level of a not-so-smart second grader then said "you're on your own." do you know any good programs/websites/whatever else to help me with my japanese?

  • Sorry if that question was already covered in your previous comments btw!

  • Excellent advice! I've really been wanting to start to learn Japanese, I'm just not really sure where to start. Unfortunately I live in Texas (HELL YEAH) which means my exposure to Japanese culture is limited to late night subbed animes and games that allow for Japanese language. (if you even want to count that as exposure) Do you have any tips or tricks for those of us with an extremely limited amount of Japanese exposure? Any good software that you'd recommend good sir?

  • 4 years ago so why bother telling him to turn off his music even though he can't change that

  • could u turn ur music off

  • @bunnyluveable ok :)

  • @Hikosaemon all my Japanese friends just want to speak English one even refuses to speak Japanese to other Japanese people. He just ignores them until they speak to him in English. It is kind of amusing though.

  • My advice for the people who want to learn japanese is to use their smart phones and download apps for learning japanese belive me thats how i learned it

  • I learned japanese by studying off of japanese music, and english lyrics I translated into japanese. I swear it's the best way, i even made a site out of it. asiabymusic, com

  • Wow, this is a great video! thank you. Also, are those turntables in the backround? Im a DJ looking to move to japan. Maybe you could help me out... What is the scene there like? Is it easy to land a job as a DJ there?

  • i've been learning japanese just by watching anime and reading manga :)

  • @medusa172 can u speak and form sentences????

  • @BriCareful

no but i can say words one by one.well, i do know how to say "how are you today?" in japanese but i don't know how to spell it.

  • Very nice video. For people who have an iPhone, get Kanji LS. It has kanji writing test mode (a stylus helps) to help recognize and WRITE all levels of kanji.

Also every iPhone has Japanese character recognition built in. This is where you can draw a kanji and it tries to guess what kanji you wrote. There are tutorials online to switch this feature on. It also helps to have a Japanese dictionary in your iPhone to help you look up that Kanji, mine's called lol "Japanese Dictionary"

  • 私が日本からではないですので、私に家の保険を販売しようとして停止してください

  • @tsjb89 I am not from Japan. Please stop trying to sell me Japanese tests to me at my house.

Is that what you are trying to say? I don't understand well. Could you explain another way? もし英語したくなかったら、日本語でほかの道でおしえてもいい?

  • Haha "the japanese girl friend thing."

I believe jap. Is was easier than korean

  • i want to learn japanese how long did it take you to have a good conversation in japanese?

  • @jayd4ever I learned by music, check out something like languagebymusic, blogspot, com

  • @ByMay9th it dont work private message me

  • @jayd4ever kk

  • this only talks about how he learned japanese!:p

  • @MaisyLeigh7 Yeah, he is like you, an individual, but what he stated applies to all. Immersion, total immersion.

I think the only things that will stop you from learning "anything," are:

    1. Not applying yourself

    2. Doubting yourself

    3. Lack of repetition, miss a day here and there, fine. Miss a week or two reoccurring, not fine.

  • I'd Go to Japan if the disasters didnt happen. and If i knew where to start learning :/...I dont have any Japanese friends.

  • @GuitarMasterXVII The internet has tons of resources.

  • Thanks for the heads up, I have been learning Japanese on and off since 2002 when I became seriously interested in learning the language. However no Japanese people live local to my area, so I cannot utilise my new learning skill to any potential. But I am planning to visit Japan in a couple of years time as I want to visit Osaka as Japan is a great country and I have bought a text book on Osaka-ben as well so it should help me understand the dialect better, even if my Nihongo is poor >_<.

  • there is no need to speak japanese fast.

and i know this guy's japanese is not that good.....

  • My girl friend is japanese but she cant speak japanese

  • the most important thing he says is "think in japanese"

  • That was inspiring as I'm currently in Japan trying to learn something.

You could have cut the last minute though

  • also i plan on getting a job at a manga/anime store or so but since i am not fluent enough for a very complex chat in japanese for a long time how would i go about getting it if they don't understand english.

  • also if you go to japan and have no one to explain some things, is it better or harder to learn. because i know that words will just stay in your head over time and will just be remembered easy over time, but all you need is to find out what it means which makes it easy to use. which you also remember sentences in use and such which you would try to understand and use if confident. so i think i just answered my own question didn't i for this question and the other comment.

  • hey i'm in year 12 and studied japanese at home for 1 year and know a lot of grammer and can speak quite basicely, but i have a case where if i don't get into university for any of the courses i chose (6 courses including japanese depending what they say i can get). if i wasn't accepted or if i got the japanese would it be better just to drop it and go to japan and learn? in other words would i pick it up faster.

  • well i know only about 10 words in jappenise over a month and i still cant get it right

  • I am having some issues with the pronounciations of the words so I do hope that everything gets easier as time passes.

  • @TheStoryIsOver I was just saying that cuz he wrote, "Learn to speak GOOD Japanese FAST" when it should've been something along the lines of, Learn to speak Japanese WELL and FAST. Or, Fluent Japanese Quickly. It's proper English :3 kitty face

  • Learn to speak FLUENT English QUICKLY!

  • Hikosaemon. Im 15 and British. I want to learn Japanese because i want to move to Japan, Tokyo when im older. So i subed because it has helped me understand what to do. Im not very good at launguges at school. Im in my last year and when i leave i am going to to get a job until i have enough to move to Japan. I really want to learn Japanese. I just love Japanese culture since i was little. I could not decide between China and Japan but i have made the choice of Japan. I hope i learn it...LOL.

  • @spartanwarrior46 Wowww same situation, i'm also 15 and british ;o, but trust me, once you learn japanese try not to expect much from it...

  • @crunchylisa I would expect to understand Japanese people more better and be able to be social with Japanese people. Apart from that i understand what you mean. LOL.

  • @spartanwarrior46 LOL True dat, are you studying it a the moment?

  • @crunchylisa No, but when i finish my last year of School. I wil try to learn it.

  • @spartanwarrior46 Aren't you planning to carry on with A-levels or something? If you do, then it's best to start learning now... because you'll be even more busy in those years...

  • @spartanwarrior46 if you want to learn more japanese, please watch my japanese lessons. IYou can skip lesson one its about conversation, but otherwise it starts in lesson three about sentences and from then on i teach you to speak in phrases and sentences. Please try it. :D

  • By the way, do you think it would be somehow possible to work in Tokyo even though I don't have a degree, or would I absolutely have to marry my girlfriend?

  • I managed to learn Hiragana in one week and then Katakana in one day :) But then I started with Kanji :P FUCK!

  • @arbide3 Lol, same. It's a lot harder than speaking the language. Like with any language, you can pick up phrases from listening to music, talking with native speakers, watching television and film in the language, etc. But learning how to read, especially with something as complicated as Japanese... Insanely difficult! I wouldn't give up though. :)

  • @kirby28645 I love Kanji; just a pity there are so many and the "on" & "kun" readings complicate things, but I started two days ago and managed to learn twenty; so should take a few months to learn about 1000. My girlfriend is Japanese which will help when I meet her again, and she is a Nihongo sensei :)

  • @arbide3 I think there are about 20,000 commonly-used kanji. I know of a book series that teaches about 80,000 which can be learned in about a year with patience and perseverance. A friend of mine uses it. I'd like to give it a shot myself. :D

  • @kirby28645 Yeah I read that there are some acedemic books that claim there are about 100,000 Kanji, but for Japanese only about 2000 are needed right?

  • @arbide3 There about. The most common kanji can probably be found being used on forms and simple books. The fun part about Japanese kanji is that more often than not, you can 'create' a word using two individual kanji. Sometimes this isn't the case, but if you're a newbie in Japanese like me, it works, and most of my Japanese friends can still understand me (although I definitely don't type fluently, lol). Japanese is really fun to learn though, if you can get past the confusing bits! xD

  • @arbide3 To be honest, there are only about 2,136 that are very commonly used. You can learn them the same way Japanese students do. Look up 'Joyo kanji' for a list. You can also find some sweet 'flash card'-type games for studying those kanji too. You might find it useful to just study words in hiragana and katakana first though (katakana IS for foreign words, but they can sound confusing when pronounced at first, so worth studying too).

  • @kirby28645 Boku wa hiragana to katakana to chotto kanji ga wakaru demo kanji ga muzukashii desu ne.

  • @arbide3 Hai, hajime no uchi wa muzukashii. Demo man-ichi shippai shite mo kujikeru na. :)

  • @kirby28645 Hai, hai :( Demo kanji ga suki desu, totemo omoshiroi ne. Ima boku ni china town sundeiru, kanji ga chotto wakatteiru.

  • @arbide3 Watashi-tachi wa mina keiken kara manabu monodesu. 1-Kyu no kanji o oboete imasu ka! :D Gaikoku go o manabu koto wa tanoshii!

  • ringo wa oishii desu!

  • Where do I start? My brain hurts and I didn't even do anything yet,

  • I would like a favor from you. Which alphabet do you think is better for french/english speaker to learn. Can you please give me a website where i can find these alphabets. Arigatougozaimasu☺

  • I'm really interested in learning Japanese. I started about one month ago and already learned more than 500 vocabs. But I still can only form some simple sentences. Well, gotta keep going I guess ;)

  • greta help thanks

  • If you get tired of Japanese just watch ANIME and it will all be better!

  • I like the bit of advice about not trying to speak in a way that's too advanced...just express yourself simply, the best you can, like a kid...good advice, b/c vocabulary does expand in time.

  • It is "speak well" not "speak good" lol

  • Can you read Japanese script aswell?

  • @StarMangledAstronaut Yes - I worked in Japanese companies a long time, so I function more or less like an ordinary Japanese at work.

  • @Hikosaemon

Hi, I saw your video. Very interesting and useful. I live in Germany. Is there a way (link) to watch Japanese tv and listen to the radio online?

  • Working and socialising exclusively with Japanese people, getting a Japanese girlfriend and submerging yourself in Japanese media having already studied Japanese at university for two years works, no doubt, but it isn't a process I would descibe as "FAST", personally.

  • Hey should I use watashi Wa or boku to say I? Watashi Wa skoshi hanashimas nihongo and don't know how to get hiragana char's on my computer lol

  • Ok thanks

  • Would it be wrong of me for using Google Translate to learn Japanese? Haha, because that's what I've been doing... = /

  • You said something about boys and girls speaking differently does that mean they pronounce it differently?

  • @dajon220 Both, pronouncation, but they also use a lot of very different words, which is why even if you speak in a manly voice, if you copy the words a woman uses, you will still come across as effeminate if you are a guy (or vice versa)

  • I know the alphabet and some common phrases but I dont get it. Do I have to learn every word or sentence sepertly or is there something that I'm missing.

  • crap

  • @Robinbanks2008 I have that dvd too

  • @Adeirah99 me to

  • 早く話してもわかりズラいと意味ないっす。

    この人の日本語別にそんなにうまくないっす。

  • Public libraries let you rent language cd's. You can listen to a lot of different versions and get a strong basic. This is gonna sound very retarded but Kidswebjapan lets you learn Japanese audibly. Just click a lesson or learning style. It's good for just starting.

  • Best advice EVEEERRRR !!!

  • Hey I'm from London UK and I'm a complete newb, I'm 18 and my friends have just got me into anime by 1st giving me a copy of final fantasy 13 to which I loved the anime side of it and decided to start watching anime films and programmes. I now wanna learn the language coz I've got a new love for japanese and I really wanna learn it. I have no idea where to start, no money and I'm kinda very lazy lol. Any help you could gimme would be much appreciated! Thanks alot :)

  • @robinbanks2008 no money LOL

  • 私のこたえはエミリー

  • great video! I'm glad you decided to keep making them.

  • Question, how old were you when you started learning?

  • Most of the japanese people I know speak english. SO i just watch NHK instead. and j pop. I know a few basics, Which I learned from various translator softwares, but its not really that useful. To chat to japanese in japanese would be more benficial. Than just learning basics. Is there a guide or a study pack? also is there a good translation program that doesnt give the wrong translation?

  • あなたは イギリス人ですか Sorry my Japanese isn't very good :P

  • My girlfriend said she hate Japan and now I'm single.

  • Could You please answer this? How long did it take you to learn japanese? I myself try to learn japanese from watching anime ;3 Although its not coming along greatly... Im trying to use study cards and might use rosetta stone in the future... possibly on my birthday XD Are there any other suggestions?

  • @jonrskitlez Please check my favorites on my channel page, I did a video exactly on this topic. I hope it helps :)

  • @jonrskitlez Tofugu will tell you that learning japanese threw anime is a NO NO.

  • @jonrskitlez I'm learning Japanese threw many ways I'll tell you what i use. I use to use Rosetta stone but it not very helpful when it comes to grammar I find it good for learning nouns and some verbs but participles no. Look up Pimselur Japanese Mp3's they are very helpful. Also try smart.fm(or now iknow.jp) that will help with reading characters. Watch Japanese kids shows not anime they help because anime is to advanve for starter.

  • @jonrskitlez omg me 2

  • @jonrskitlez rosetta stone is a waste of money... ^-^

  • Japanese girlfriend = Sleeping Dictionary

  • @oak415 except how many japanese women look like jessica alba?... lol ;)

  • @oak415 sorry for being ignorant, but can you explain me Why a sleeping dictionary? please

  • @lopezluch0 Sorry, my fault for assuming everyone's seen Jessica Alba's 2003 Film. Kind of a inside joke for those who have seen it. Pretty good flick. Worth a rental or download.

  • @oak415 I´ll buy the film right now lol.

  • @lopezluch0 Hold on.. you can actually watch Sleeping Dictionary directly here on Youtube watch?v=nvToTRlwHJk It comes in 11 parts. If you like it then buy it.

  • You remind me of Jason Statham

  • I have never attended a single Japanese class so far since I started studying Japanese in late 2007. Now, I just say something as simple as "konnichiwa" and Japanese people immediately say I have good Japanese. (which is weird but well) Native speakers are EXTREMELY HAPPY even if its ONLY stock phrases because they love the effort. So, don't be afraid to just say only what you know. Make the frustration of not being able to say what you want be your motivation. It was mine and still is (:

  • inspiring! ありがとうございます。

  • I agree. It takes total immersion. Now, I'll admit that your Japanese is better than mine, although I have very few problems, but the way I did it was similar to you. After my first year here I dropped out of the Eikaiwa system and go got a job in a Japanese company.

  • I found a legit tutor back in high school and I studied Japanese for a few years. Unfortunately she has to stop our lessons, and that was about 3 years ago. I can read hiragana just fine though my vocab is limited, and I was just learning katakana when we stopped. After my lessons were done, I was hoping my business college would have Japanese...they don't. I had a female Japanese music teacher who is famous in Japan who was gonna teach me...but she got cancer. I am at a loss...what can I do?

  • i learnt japanese for about 3 years, but i'm still not good in it :(

  • Will it be hard for me to learn Japanese with Czech being my first language and English being my second language? I am still pretty young if that matters, and i'd like to know how long does it take to speak fluidly japanese. (Considering the fact that I WANT to learn it)

  • @TheCrazyTom Oh, sorry for the double post, but I just wanted to add that I don't have any Japanese class in my school or anywhere around my city, so if there are any alternative ways of learning Japanese BEFORE high school. Thanks!

  • @TheCrazyTom I don't know if I'm in the position to say this since you're asking the person in the video HAHA, but anyway, different people learn at different speeds. Just make sure you don't lose the fire of WANTING to learn Japanese. Trust me, just STUDY and one day, you'll just realize that you understood alot more than you did in the past, and in a much shorter time that you expected. Don't put too high an expectation on yourself. Just enjoy learning. Japanese is my 3rd language too (:

  • @sixsibs Thanks! I appreciate your reply!

  • Did you use any books, or dis you just use flashcards to build a vocabulary?

  • @elvein1 I studied in school for a number of years and so had a certain base of vocab from formal education. Of course, my base wasn't that strong, given than I dropped out...

I would say that on top of the basic foundation of vocab from 2 years at university, I pretty much picked up most vocabulary through use, and listening to friends and television, and always having a dictionary handy.

The key thing is that when you listen to and use Japanese, phrases are more important than words.

  • yeap man you got that rigth sourround your self with Everything Japanese

  • Men and women speak differently? What do you mean by "differently?" Like the way they pronounce things...Or..... yeah. :>

  • Thinking of English as ice cream makes me appreciate my native language so much more.

  • Did it take you 10 years to learn jap or just ten years to do speak it perfect?

  • i am doing the rosetta stone software and need help understanding japanese setence structure how dose it work

  • The part about the Japanese girlfriend being a trap - ABSOLUTELY TRUE!!! People always tell me I speak like a girl in Japanese!

  • ai shi te ru

  • @tAYlORtANUVASA lol, ta-loooo-faaaaaa! :)

  • @tAYlORtANUVASA WHAT does it mean?

  • man i cant believe im even watching this. Ive been studying Japanese for 6 years, its just now that i can speak it, and i just dropped my japanese class.

  • awww mean ur from nz

  • First off thanks for taking the time to make these videos, it really helps to see what paths others taking in their language learning endeavour!

I was just curious on two things, 1) What was the JLPT1 test like? (or do you have a video of your comments on it?)

and 2) Do you have any good online resources for japanese videos? (dramas, tv shows, movies...etc?)

Oh,and your experience with kanji is just flash cards? I tried with chinese, but had 100's of cards in no time lol

    cheers again mate!

  • When I watch anime, should I read the subs or just listen to they are saying to help me learn?

  • @kimiko141 both. I'm dutch so reading english is already an accomplishment for me lol but after watching for so long I recognize some japanese words here and there. And off course you can't just listen to what they are saying, you need the subtitles to actually translate what you hear

  • everything this guy says is correct. listen to this man.

  • Wow...my uncle teachs Japanese at Auckland Uni!!!! You might know him!!! How surprise ;) i've been to NZ for 6 months ago. There was really awesome! Love there :D

  • Hi there, I just visted the white rabbit webiste in your link box. There are lots of different Kanji sets to buy, which one specifically do you recommend? Thanks a lot.

  • I really want to learn japanese, something tells me I wont be able to though

  • hey dude, really nice channel, i am also learning Japanese, I hit Japan 5 months ago and I am looking forward to improve it, so far I live in Yokohama.... take care!!

  • @tokyoraver83 you live in Yokohama ? may i ask, what do you do for living ?

  • @FatemahAliZainab well I am studying here as many of international people...

  • i usally go to anime to learn jap

  • oh my god i love new zealand

  • Hey NZ!! im learning Jap in auckland uni at the moment... im really hating the Kanji :(

  • @KennyParkz haha, I did Japanese at Auckland Uni too. Are Chako sensei and Prof Lawrence still there?

  • @Hikosaemon haha no.. all the tutoras and lectureres are japanese.. (one Chinese) how long ago did you go to uni?

  • ovguide.com has a asian movie section to learn move of these movies come with subtitles

  • how do i remember the words they r sayin im forgetful

  • im moving over there next year an i want learn it i have no japanese friend wat kinda shows did you watch i will watch them on my ps3

  • @saiahznightz Dramas are the absolute best. They all run for 12 episodes, there are many different kinds, some typical love stories but others are comedies or based on manga. Point is that dramas show 12 hours of everyday life and conversation of the characters in them - it is the absolute best way to familiarize yourself with Japanese through tv.

    Peace

  • @Hikosaemon smart learning japanese when i look on manga:D

  • @saiahznightz Also watching Anime is really good..... my friend watches a ton of it.. and now he speaks fluently haha.. but he cant write... we're Korean so i guess it's easier for us...

  • I am not learning Japanese but your video was very helpful to me. I think what you are saying is true of most language learning. I know that is what is stalling me in my Arabic right now, not keeping the English influence out of my life. And when I do get tired, I give myself a break. Now I know not to do that! Thanks for the video!

  • Have your own Japanese teacher that will teach you the language, virtually "on call" 24 hours a day! See the video - youtube.com/watch?v=wfseANZtMNg

  • a new zealander :) im a new zelander,, going to japan for a year on student exchange,, learning japanese is really difficult.. but im getting there :)

  • Can you also write in japanese?

  • Great video.. very decent man!

  • great advice :)

    tnx

  • arg

i REALLY want to learn japanese but i cant

  • Japan isnt a racist country, it's definitely a country where being nice is almost a sort of, but of course, ANYWHERE you go, you'll eventually meet up with racism of some sort. When I was a kid, my friend and I went to a fair, we offered to pay for him, but each time he insisted he payed. When his mom came and picked him up, she gave us a cake. and not a cheap cake. It was a pretty epic cake, one of those fancy but still delicious cakes. I remember this after so many years :P

  • Nice vids. I am going to Japan for the first time in October. Can't wait. Of course, my Japanese is not very good. Will it be hard, in your opinion, for me to get around? I have been using pimsleur to learn and it is working, but it is slow going. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

  • Hi, really nice vid I really admire you :).

Can you please recommend some really good text books for self studying?

    ありがとう. :)

  • @ZuziFox mina no nihongo is very good

  • this is my way:watch anime!no seriously ive been watching two animes for lil under a year and im pretty good myself anyways, arigato for putting dis up!(im 11 yr old mexican who speaks japanese 8D)

  • @punkrose51 konnichiwa. that's cool. i'm learning to speak slowly. i'm usually a fast learner but with languages? not really. sayonara.

  • *chuckles* I wished someone told me this when I started learning English. Okay, maybe our teacher did so (because he was awesome as that). So basically you recommend to try to get a partner for "tandem language learning"? How did you cope with the accent? I had a brief holiday in Australia and after I was back a friend from the UK asked me if I had recently been in Australia, because it seemed I picked up a bit of an accent. Did you experience something like that too?

  • So how do you actually learn from surrounding yourself from Japanese people?

  • @Relesy if youre forced to speak every single day, you automatically learn out of necessity. if you want to maintain your independance and communicate with your peers, you must learn. coupled with studying you will learn very fast.

  • I understand and heard Japan is strict with forieners. How did you go about filling out you citizenship application and where did you go from there.

  • is their any shows like dora the explorer that teach you japanese?

  • @fullmetalshakespear yea its called ni hao kai lan lol it teaches you stuff like hi and bye and other important stuff

  • @Existifying thats chinese!

  • @MyHugestFan It is? i would have never guessed...

  • @Existifying well the man asked for something to learn japanese and you suggested a show to learn chinese.

  • @MyHugestFan Well i did not know it was chinese

  • @Existifying lol, no... nihao kai lan is chinese.
