@grejsancoprative Exuberant greed of non-comic book fan buyers who thought they were going to make themselves rich selling multiple copies of these comics including X-Men 1. The industry crashed shortly after this and Marvel filed for bankruptcy.
@chroniclerofthe70s First, without trying to sound like a bitch, but I don't know how that's related to what I wrote. And second, I did not know that Marvel went bankrupt. Sorry that I am not that educated but thank you because now I know.
@grejsancoprative The 8.2 million sales of X-Men 1 was extraordinary. This in itself would have been something special and gave legitimacy to the writing and artwork of X-Men 1. Unfortunately, during this time a small economic bubble occurred within the comic book industry and individuals were buying multiple copies of a first book in order to quickly sell them and make a quick profit. Therefore, we will never know how many copies of X-Men 1 would have been sold without the greed factor.
@ArtPassword I agree, Jim Lee is a good artist. However, there are some extraordinary talented artists like Frank Frazetta and Boris Vallejo. Frank Frazetta sometimes rendered artwork for the comic magazine the " Savage Sword of Conan. "
Not to be a prick, but X-Men1 only sold so many because of all the variants, which people thought would be worth a ton of money in the long run, but it was this way of producing sales that brought down the value of comics so much people (generally) were turned away from comics. The stories were awful, the interior art was generally bad, but they had plenty of foil covers. Jim Lee was pretty decent back in his day, i still like his work, but today i prefer McNiven, Quitely, Lienil Yu, etc.
@TerryBogard675 comics aren't selling very well today. I'ev been told this by people who sell comics for a living. I think this is more of a testament to how much things have changed. Luckily though the glory days of comicdom may be coming back, fingers crossed. I just hope if they'er planning on making comics more adult, they actually cut down the cheese factor drastically, or else the targeted demographics lack on interest will bring another low for the industry in general like before.
@ATENakaATON I gave up on comics because it's the same sh*t over and over only dark and overpriced for the adults keeping the comic industry alive. The new stories are gimmicky crap that bring back characters from the dead. If a character dies he should stay dead. The only one that stays dead is Uncle Ben and who knows if he will be brought back in some gimmicky crap. Leave them dead and put that effort into creating a new character. Until then the comic industry is a joke.
@telewatcher89 I'm surprised it was only a couple months ago I typed that, it feels like years ago. I agree, with you. Generally speaking I only buy maybe 3 or 4 comics at the most a month which are brand new. Typically i just buy classics if i buy anything at all. Once I realized the once great current run on Daredevil and Thor sucked right after writer changes, Spiderman since the 80's has gone no where and any comic barely decent got at least 3 spin offs i gave up on the industry as a whole.
@ATENakaATON What runied comic books is comic stores. People were paying big bucks for old comics that their parents had thrown away and started seeing comics as an investment. Now a CS is the only place to get comics. But those old books were rare. Jim Lee's X-Men was good, but that multicover thing was just Marvel's way to cash in on the comic investment craze. I like X-Men vol 2, but you can find those #1's for 25 cents. I don't like how X-Men now is more like those mediocre at best movies.
@telewatcher89 you could also blame the fans, however Marvel and DC to a lesser degree, did try to cash in on the craze and produced some really awful comics just to get it done quickly since they knew they'd sell because of the craze and didn't worry about what that would cause in the long run.
@ATENakaATON That scenario would decribe the Clone Saga of the 90's and yes, some fans are part of the problem. Most fans nowdays want everything in a dark nior style like Batman, but not everything needs to be dark to be serious or somewhat realistic. Look at the Avengers, Quesada and Bendis ruined it by making in dark as well as making Scatlett Witch crazy. And they added Spider-Man and Wolverine to the team just to sell books to attract fans who only like those two characters. I just hate it.
This was around the time X-MEN the Animated Series (based on Jim Lee's work) was either coming to Fox Kids or was already airing. Warranting the Malcolm "X" cap, I'd say 1992?
To me, Jim's version of X-MEN was classic. One of the best eras in comic history.
At the end of his life, the deadliest gunfighter of the Old West is given a choice: Hell or redemption. He chooses redemption and God's Archangel transports him to modern day Los Angeles to serve bloody, frontier justice on the worst dregs of society.
Jim Lee is the greatest comic book artist. for all of you comic book fans check out x men 275, the absolute best comic book ever featuring jim lee's art.
Jim to me is the best penciler of all time. I remeber being enthrawled with X-Men 1. I poured over the pages wondering how this art could exist. Hes only gotten better over the years
@JacobEliRossSC Not of all time - what about Milton Caniff, Will Eisner, Jack Kirby, Hal Foster, Gil Kane etc? But he is great. One of the very best in comics today.
@JacobEliRossSC Jim to you is the best penciler of all time? Try looking up Brian Asher from Texas, an artist who slowly and tediously pencils realistic artwork of cowboy life.
i watched a documentary tht said tht in the nineties people collected multiple copies of the same comic book cos the thought they were worth thousands so comic companies printed out multiple copies. its the greed factor
This would have been 1992, since X-Men #1 was released in late 1991. This was also right around the time Image Comics was being formed. WildC.A.T.S was released around August 1992.
i grew up watching spiderman on saturdays when stan lee would welcome the "true believers" i love stan lee, hope i can meet him one day, maybe get him to read one of my comic books lol omg i would plots lol
well my guess is tht up untill, jim lee and mckfarlin came in dc had the better artists. they already had decent to great artists on their work so they never needed him or any one. where as marvel artists were not always the best. plus at the time marvel wernt doing so well, they lost money and some stuff was getting cancelled so they needed artists and saw potential in him, liefeld and mackfarlin. those three i think realy braught marvel back up.
Kiddie comics? Have you ever been to a comic book shop? Your Werhtam-esque way of thinking makes it seem as though you'restuck in the 1950's. FYI: Watchmen, A History of Violence, V for Vendetta, From Hell, Constantine (Hellblazer),Men in Black (although the films/cartoon show were kiddiefied), Road to Perdition, Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, the Punisher, Sin City, 300, Ghost Rider and Blade for example were all comic books before they were films. I wouldn't consider them as "kiddie" at all.
so lets see,he sold over 8 million ,and thats a lot for comics, stan said 1 million was already quite much and nowadays ppl dont buy them as much as they did b4, so if i plan to get into comic bussines i cant expect much, unless maybe if i am a freaking good artist, but comics is not the same as b4, teens rather buy drugs
My goal for my Preview Issue of MockTales is to sell 100 copies next year. Definately a huge difference. Plus... I'm no Jim Lee. lol. But yeah, getting into the business isn't hard... just depends on what level you're shooting for. Good luck!
actually, I'm pretty sure that the X in Xmen is for the X in The Xavier Institute for Higher learning. wich i'm pretty sure is a school for mutants. I haven't read the comic so I'm not 100 percent positive that i'm right.
I believe "X" is used to represent the same as in methermatics- a variable; in this case, the variable genetic factors that gave the X-men their powers.
Awesome, so you fall under all three categories? If you're so against people over the age of 16 reading comics then what the hell are you doing watching this video?
Instead of being a dick why don't you leave people alone and keep your idiot thoughts to yourself.
Now now Brabon, I'll admit Stan's hogged the credit for quite a lot of things in his lifetime, The creation of the Marvel Universe for instance without very much mention of say Jack Kirby, Steve Ditko and some others, Lee turning Jack Kirby's Silver Surfer from a godlike being of pure energy into a soliloquy spouting cosmic hippy however---
Well, Stan can be a nice guy in a sort of P.T. Barnum style, He reminds me of a comicbook dealer I know who will try to sell you Central Park with a smile.
of course he is nice...you would be nice too if you became a millionaire by making sure that you got the compensation for other's work...to this day, ditko hasnt received dollar one from the spidey franchise...kirby hasnt seen dollar one from anything (at least dc has been relatively generous in regards to his 4th world creations) i cried when kirby died...i wont shed a tear for lee
I do love Stan, though. The best editor and best script-writer for comics. But not THE IDEA MAN. He got most of the ORIGINAL ideas from the artists... usually KIRBY. Stan is a hambone and lots of fun but he seriously overstates his CREATIVE ROLE in so far as the conception of NEW CHARACTERS. His style of writing was revolutionary but without the artists, he would have had nothing to write. NO JACK... NO STAN OR MARVEL. NO MARVEL... D.C. probably has a thousand more characters from Jack.
A good example would be all the early Marvel compilations such as 'Origins' only say 'BY STAN LEE'. That is an insult and a LIE. One must assume that Marvel did not want to have to pay more to other creators, LIKE JACK. Marvel is a disgrace for the way they treated Kirby. They even tried to STEAL his original art. In fact, considering how much went 'missing', 'somebody' stole quite a bit. Stan, NATURALLY, did not come to Jack's defense. Stan is a company man. A CORPORATE MAN. Jack was REAL.
ya, well, being a company man didnt stop lee from suing marvel for his share of the spidey franchise...a share that shouldve been given to ditko...fyi, at the time of the original settlement, when jack finally got his original art back, stan was just a figurehead, the company was being run by jim shooter...who finally got his own comeuppance when he was ousted from valiant
but stan lee gave ditko co creation credit on the spiderman movies, probably making him lots of cash. and remeber ditko can be a real prickly pear who rubs people up the wrong way.
i now understand your confusion...stan lee no longer runs marvel or marvel entertainment, so it was not he, but marvel entertainment that credited ditko with spidey on the movies...however, no compensation was paid to ditko...and i dont care if ditko is a recluse, it is his creation and he should receive compensation
sorry if i came on too hard for ditko, i love ditko. but even you have to admit hes a little nuts. he is a genius but hes eccentric. Plus stan lee created and co created basically all marvels back catalogue of greats.
To JRock: I'm not sure if BIGBRADY knew he was lying to you or not, but Jack Kirby is not the main figure behind DC. Jack Kirby is best known for his artwork for Marvel. I guess if DC had a "main figure," it would be it's founder, Malcolm Wheeler-Nicholson.
JACK KIRBY is the true main figure for Marvel. If you think Kirby was just drawing Stan's ideas you need to look at the facts. Kirby saved Marvel. Kirby joins Marvel and shortly after, they have a thousand new and inventive characters. Kirby leaves Marvel and creates an entire universe of characters for D.C., many of which are still huge. Stan, at this time, QUITS WRITING. Jack comes back to Marvel and creates more characters that are still quite big. The facts are undeniable.
Well I could care less about anyone else. Stan made most of the characters and/or super teams that I still like today Spiderman, Hulk, X-Men, and Ironman only to name a few.
Stan did a GREAT job of writing DIALOGUE for characters that JACK KIRBY CREATED, like THE X-MEN (including MAGNETO), IRON-MAN, THE HULK, THOR, CAPTAIN AMERICA(created BEFORE STAN LEE EVEN HAD A JOB), The Black Panther, The Fantastic Four, The Avengers and THE SILVER SURFER(INDISPUTABLY CREATED BY JACK) to name A FRACTION of the KING'S OUTPUT! You know who FIRST called JACK KIRBY 'THE KING'? IT WAS STAN LEE!!! I love Stan Lee also but the facts remain... JACK KIRBY MADE MARVEL! 'NUFF SAID!'
He's the guy who made Marvel before Stan Lee had a job with Captain America then came back and SAVED Marvel and Stan Lee in the early 60's creating, co-creating or co-designing every great character they now make billions off of. That is why Stan Lee calls him THE KING OF COMICS!

As if Comic companies don't produce multiple covers to sell more copies to the SAME people.
That is just ridickiliss!

i watched a documentary tht said tht in the nineties people collected multiple copies of the same comic book cos the thought they were worth thousands so comic companies printed out multiple copies. its the greed factor

what year was this made? it feels like it was made in the 80s
chatanwarrior 2 years ago
This would have been 1992, since X-Men #1 was released in late 1991. This was also right around the time Image Comics was being formed. WildC.A.T.S was released around August 1992.

Is X-Men #1 the first series that had Storm in the all series that spawned the kickass cartoon?
GBallaJ 2 years ago
No. Storm is from the 80s and the cartoon has stores from the 60-90s.
Jim's book mae the cartoon big, and vise-versa.

wow he got rejected by dc comics?
dudeyy399 2 years ago
well my guess is tht up untill, jim lee and mckfarlin came in dc had the better artists. they already had decent to great artists on their work so they never needed him or any one. where as marvel artists were not always the best. plus at the time marvel wernt doing so well, they lost money and some stuff was getting cancelled so they needed artists and saw potential in him, liefeld and mackfarlin. those three i think realy braught marvel back up.

The funniest thing in the world is when grown men read comic books about superhero's in tights (which in itself is wierd and a bit homosexual)..
Then they feel they need to justify their love of kiddies comics so they start calling the comic books "graphic novels" its sooo funny
blumetatron 2 years ago
There is a difference in comic and graphic novel
OrigamiPaper 2 years ago

I haven't read the comic so I'm not 100 percent positive that i'm right.
connormac1234567 3 years ago
The X in X men originaly stood for extra ability. But the meaning has changed over the years
camkcam 3 years ago
I believe "X" is used to represent the same as in methermatics- a variable; in this case, the variable genetic factors that gave the X-men their powers.

why? did you kick the old geezer in the ass?
brabon 3 years ago
Now now Brabon, I'll admit Stan's hogged the credit for quite a lot of things in his lifetime, The creation of the Marvel Universe for instance without very much mention of say Jack Kirby, Steve Ditko and some others, Lee turning Jack Kirby's Silver Surfer from a godlike being of pure energy into a soliloquy spouting cosmic hippy however---
Well, Stan can be a nice guy in a sort of P.T. Barnum style, He reminds me of a comicbook dealer I know who will try to sell you Central Park with a smile.
cha5 3 years ago
of course he is nice...you would be nice too if you became a millionaire by making sure that you got the compensation for other's work...to this day, ditko hasnt received dollar one from the spidey franchise...kirby hasnt seen dollar one from anything (at least dc has been relatively generous in regards to his 4th world creations) i cried when kirby died...i wont shed a tear for lee

D.C. probably has a thousand more characters from Jack.
itzjoeymac 3 years ago
how do you know he overstates his role
BradLad56 3 years ago
A good example would be all the early Marvel compilations such as 'Origins' only say 'BY STAN LEE'. That is an insult and a LIE. One must assume that Marvel did not want to have to pay more to other creators, LIKE JACK. Marvel is a disgrace for the way they treated Kirby. They even tried to STEAL his original art. In fact, considering how much went 'missing', 'somebody' stole quite a bit. Stan, NATURALLY, did not come to Jack's defense. Stan is a company man. A CORPORATE MAN. Jack was REAL.
itzjoeymac 3 years ago
ya, well, being a company man didnt stop lee from suing marvel for his share of the spidey franchise...a share that shouldve been given to ditko...fyi, at the time of the original settlement, when jack finally got his original art back, stan was just a figurehead, the company was being run by jim shooter...who finally got his own comeuppance when he was ousted from valiant
brabon 3 years ago
but stan lee gave ditko co creation credit on the spiderman movies, probably making him lots of cash. and remeber ditko can be a real prickly pear who rubs people up the wrong way.
loveupskirts 3 years ago
i now understand your confusion...stan lee no longer runs marvel or marvel entertainment, so it was not he, but marvel entertainment that credited ditko with spidey on the movies...however, no compensation was paid to ditko...and i dont care if ditko is a recluse, it is his creation and he should receive compensation
brabon 3 years ago
sorry if i came on too hard for ditko, i love ditko. but even you have to admit hes a little nuts. he is a genius but hes eccentric. Plus stan lee created and co created basically all marvels back catalogue of greats.
loveupskirts 3 years ago
stan lee still denies ditko he wants all the credit for spidey wen actually all he basically did was the basic story and ditko did the rest

if Stan Lee is to Marvel, who is the main figure behind D.C. Comics?
JRock0085 4 years ago
jack kirby
BIGBRADY169 3 years ago
Thanks
JRock0085 3 years ago
To JRock: I'm not sure if BIGBRADY knew he was lying to you or not, but Jack Kirby is not the main figure behind DC. Jack Kirby is best known for his artwork for Marvel. I guess if DC had a "main figure," it would be it's founder, Malcolm Wheeler-Nicholson.
AnonSoldier01 3 years ago
Come to think of it, all my life I haven't heard of one single central figure for D.C. Comics. No one like Stan [A.K.A. Mr. Marvel]
JRock0085 3 years ago
JACK KIRBY is the true main figure for Marvel. If you think Kirby was just drawing Stan's ideas you need to look at the facts. Kirby saved Marvel. Kirby joins Marvel and shortly after, they have a thousand new and inventive characters. Kirby leaves Marvel and creates an entire universe of characters for D.C., many of which are still huge. Stan, at this time, QUITS WRITING. Jack comes back to Marvel and creates more characters that are still quite big. The facts are undeniable.
itzjoeymac 3 years ago
Well I could care less about anyone else. Stan made most of the characters and/or super teams that I still like today Spiderman, Hulk, X-Men, and Ironman only to name a few.
JRock0085 3 years ago
'NUFF SAID!'
itzjoeymac 3 years ago
who is jack kirby?
Halo2isgay87 3 years ago
He's the guy who made Marvel before Stan Lee had a job with Captain America then came back and SAVED Marvel and Stan Lee in the early 60's creating, co-creating or co-designing every great character they now make billions off of. That is why Stan Lee calls him THE KING OF COMICS!
