My grandparents saw them invade and annex their land to the 3rd Reich. They were forced to fight for the nazis and almost died in Russia, it was the worst part of their life. Königgrätz was a city in the Austrian Empire. In 1866, the Prussians scored a major victory against Austria near there, and this march was written to celebrate it.

@GenGeogeSPatton Königgrätz is a Czech city. In Czech it is called "Hradec Králové", meaning "Queen's Town/Castle", because it belonged to Czech/Bohemian queens. On July 3, 1866, brave Austrian and Saxon armies were defeated by more numerous Prussians there. This battle is also known as "Sadowa".

BUT in my world history classes, i cover the anicent history, and discuss the germanic runes, culture, tribes and germany in the time of Rome, middle ages Otto the Great and my favorite is Fredrick Barbarossa when i talk about him
i also love the reformation and thirty years war- to continue-

to continue,the,reormation,restoration,revolution, I talk about the military during the Napoleonic Era,industrial Europe side of it,Age of Bismark the Franco-Prussian War,and of course both World Wars,however i am given a specific timeline and have to be at the same period as the other teachers so i assign a lot of homework and teach my students to do research if i want to have them really understand a specific time in german history,i wish i had more time for it all but i dont. take care friend

just wanted to clarify that when i say i wish i had more time fdor it all i mean i wish i had the time to in greater detail for all that i cover and teach. if i fall behind other teachers, administration always talks to me about cutting more from my agenda. i do hate politics in education i am sure others do too

thank you my friend for your post.for me the path of Knowledge, started when my grandfather taught me my heritage and told me over and over to always read and study.funny i reread my other posts and found misspellings in a few places,but despite that little problem,i never forgot the teachings of my grandfather.so what i have learned and continue to learn i share with my students never forgot how shoked my students were to learned the monarchies of WWI Europe were related family.take care friend

I love History, too.
My former History Teacher was so great, he was pretty old, but had way more energy and exitement than most of the young ones.
And he kinda looked like the Old German Politicians :P

Now, I'm NOT trying to sound like a sadistic person, but you make sound as if the soldiers did that for no reason. Like they had a choice? They didn't. It fits any German military parade, but certainly not the paramilitary ones with brainwashed people wearing brownshirts and raising their arm to the worst criminal the world has ever known. My grandparents saw them invade and annex their land to the 3rd Reich. They were forced to fight for the nazis and almost died in Russia, it was the worst part of their life. They didn't see any honourable thing to what the Nazis made of their land. I share their opinion.

@tflehto I know Chile does, it's because at the start of WWI, every officer in the Cilean army was a German. Germany trained tons of Chilean soldiers, so they march to both this and Pruessens gloria.

whether or not he agreed is irelevant, if he fought in the war in any service that took it's orders from Berlin he was a part of the nazi war machine, his involvment allowed the nazis enough time to slaughter 6 million people. I am not saying he is a bad guy, I am saying it is not something to be proud of. My great grandfather was executed for being part of the commando raiders to helped save mother England from falling to Nazi tyranny.

Germany did not want war, that said, the Kaiser shouldn't have given the Hapsburg's a blank check regarding Serbia. "Germany did not want war" is far too ambiguous a judgement imho; the German people certainly did not want war ;as much as any other nation- the state and the military (almost one entity) craved for war- just like every other European power.
Witness the immense arms race of the early 1900's and the outlandish military strategems 'guaranteed' all of them virtually claimed, to grant victory in mere weeks.
War was inevitable. I'm surprised it didn't come in 1905,1911 or 1912.

I beg to differ; the Kaiser and some of the radicals in the Kaiserheer argued for a 'preventative' war against Cousin Nicky in the east as early as 1908.
The R.N admiralty saw the expansion of Scapa Flow's fleet garrison with the new dreadnought-class battleships as a means of keeping in check the Kaiserliche Nordseeflotte's expansion in the "imminent eventuality of an outbreak of naval hostilities"

@HerrFitztastic Well, i have to say ... look at the history books. The fact is, that whole europe was in political tension. Many interests, if rational or irrational, where in conflict. At the beginning nearly every power in europe was nearly glad to have a war. But as history shows us it was horrible. For every political party. You can make a connection from nearly every conflict in the 20th century to the 1st WW.
But it#s history. Let's all not argue but learn about/from it.
