I'd like this better as instrumental. For me, the lyrics in this song is trying to be deeper meaningful then it needs to be. The enjoyment gets slightly blurred by this nagging urban philosophy. :/
I heard this review before I got the album, and well, I love the album. Really difficult to see how this got so little love from Mr. Fantano. Maybe it's growing on him :)
Why am I still even subscribed to this channel? Fantano is the most bias reviewer on youtube. Such inconsistant scorings. I'm just slowly loosing respect for his opinion. I appreciate him bringing light to artists but the irrational judgments & statements in comparison to his other reviews based purely on bias to favorites is annoying. Could of been alot of great albums reviewed but they were pushed aside because he doesn't think they deserve time, even when influential to the art and times. smh
" Raconte-Moi Histoire" (Tell me a story) is about the high from drugs (LSD) but its ironic the way a innocent child i describing the high, not about a frog
You're fucking retarded..... this album is amazing.....and i wouldnt even call this pop music. M83 is always changing and their sound is very layered and complex. not simple at all. It's supposed to be about childhood dreams and nightmares. It's supposed to be a trip that you follow not anything that you listen to for singles. you cant think of it as singles but as a larger whole album. this is by far one of the best albums of 2011. I give it atleast a 9 to be honest. This is Indie not pop. smh
Love it, but I wish they had one more anthem in the vein of Midnight City and Steve McQueen. Also, the voice on the outro kind of ruins the track for me.
The fact that Pitchfork gave "Midnight City" song of the year is kind of depressing for me. 80s nostalgia has driven a lot of critics to pure ignorance in terms of reviewing a song or album.
DUDE YOU REALLY NEED A GET A LIFE..I HEARD OF M83 SINCE LIKE THEIR FIRST ALBUM AND MANY BANDS LIKE IT..AND I FOUND THAT MUSIC ON MY OWN BECAUSE JST THE WAY I FELT THATS WHY ITS SO DIFFERENT FROM OTHER MUSIC YOULL FEEL BETTER ND DIFERENT FROM OTHERS..AND SO I WONDER WHY ARE THEIR SO MANY PEOPLE ALL THE SUDDEN IN TO THIS KNOW WEN THIS GENRE WAS LIKE..FEWWW..A COUPLE YRS AGO
I personally was knocked out by this collection, and felt very connected to the joutney it takes. I think it takes some of the "best" of the eighties and amplifies it — I hear The Fixx, Tears For Fears, Peter Gabriel in here, mixed with a modern sensibility of production and restraint (ok, not always on the restraint). But, as always, I love your reviews and respect them!
sorry, this album is sublime and i love it! you really shouldn't take it too seriously, though (or any music for that matter) - just zone out and enjoy the sounds.
I have to say that you are way off on this one. I don't care if you are not a fan of this band, or if "you can't hang with this album". As the title suggests, there is no room for enjoyment if you do not enter the dream. Take your 'Frog Dialogue' comments for instance - maybe try listening without over-thinking it too much. You seem to enjoy darker music (i.e. Fever Ray which actually has some darker toned similarities). Epic or not, its the emotional honesty that makes this a great record!
@theneedledrop WOW! Finally someone who DISLIKES this album! Most critics out there are praising this album but I just couldn't get into this at all. I agree it's just bleh 80s through back dance trying to pass off as new wave indie histper shit.
I agree with you on this one. It does sound like they took one good idea and milked the same song out of it three or four times (Midnight City, Claudia Lewis, New Map). And after listening through the first CD a few times, the second one just sounded like the same thing all over again, making it a boring listen. Plus, having been listening loads to () and Agaetis Byrjun by Sigur Ros these days, M83's attempts at "epic" sound sort of pathetic
disagreeing with a BNM from pitchfork is certainly a way to distinguish yourself from pitchfork. not saying that's your motivation ...but still - that's just my opinion
You are usually absolutely on point with your review. but this is wrong. perception is one thing but this album is simply amazing. it is absolutely nothing like generic indie pop. This to me, is way beyond pop/dance generics. its an AOTY contender.
fuck you nerd, i want to see you riding with your friends joint on and ready to rock the fuck in ny with this song, guy youll shit your pants the culprit of your nerderness comes from you father giving you internet access.
funny that ever since anthony's got more attention from youtubers he gets more whiny comments on his negative videos. His fans used to be way more chill about that sort of thing... and this is coming from a big M83 fan.
I swear people on here take Pitchfork's opinion to be gospel.
When I heard Midnight City, I thought "one of the songs of the year" I hadn't given M83 much of a listen previously, I didn't like the old album you cite in the video but Before The Dawn Heals Us, when I heard that, I was like "FUCK!" overawed by it.
The first half, I feel like I'm listening to the 80s stuff all over again, two songs majorly sound like Duran Duran while the woah's in Reunion are either that or Toto.
Thanks for another excellent review. I agree about what the salient features of the album are (although you revealed some new things about it to me), but I liked them: for me, this is as close to indie dance as I can get, but I enjoy this comfort zone just before it, especially when dressed up in dreamy/space/whatever themes.
Sorry but first Kanye West, Then Neon Indian, and now M83??! That's three strikes against you! I'm this close to calling you OUT. I will say it's 3 strikes but you reached first base on a swing and miss. You've got 1 more strike buddy, 1 more! lol
Do you know what? These videos are pointless. They only give you a (very descriptive) subjective opinion that can alter your own personal opinion on the matter, then only to be bombarded with comments that disagree with his own opinion. IT'S CHILDISH.
@darthkrueger Yea you have a point. I was just ranting because it bothered me how it completely brainwashes me whenever I go back and listen to what he judges. Entertainment though is the primary point and you have made that clear.
Everytime there's an unknown album, first of all I listen to your review, and when the review is bad (under 5 usually) I hear the album, but when you give scores like 8 I know the album is a bounch of crap.. I'd like to hear you review the most famous and successful albums from the decade like X&Y, Graduation, American Idiot, Only by the night, Speakerboxxx/The Love Below and others...
Hate that part during the review when your like fuck, he's right... Lol istill love m83. But i will say some of thebothervsongscare a liitle over hyped and glossy
i think the biggest disappointment was the fact that Anthony Gonzalez said he wanted to make this new album a lot like "Before the Dawn Heals Us" and capture it's glory.
but it didn't at all. some tracks did, "Intro", "Midnight City", "Where the Boats Go", "Wait" and "My Tears Are Becoming a Sea" all did a great job of that...but a lot of the tracks were pretty subpar. i'd rather have long epic ambient soundscapes from "Dead Cities" than this.
I just watched the Tom Waits review....Did you not like Orphans???I thought that was a GREAT album!! Bottom of the world and you can never hold back spring were awesome....I know The new one is not all that..but orphans was great
I'm glad to see you also dislike this album, people seem to be drooling over this album just because of its ridiculous Pitchfork rating. And Reconte-Moi Une Histoire is one of the most pretentious songs I've ever heard in my life. I mean a child talking about frogs over some 'epic' synths, give me a fucking break!
@211Anon oh please, you and your elitist thinking. people have been drooling over this album ever since the leak came out. it was only amplified when p4k rated it with bnm. you really seem to hate this album from the start and just felt validated when anthony didn't like it either.
@quartzalibi Well feel free to like the album as much as you wish, but you're right that just from the first few songs I could smell a turd of an album. The fact that Fantano also wasn't too fond of it just confirms his impeccable taste #kissingass
I have to say you are way off the mark here. Based on the way you described it in your review, you made it sound like some generic dance pop album. While it contains elements of dance pop, it's way too diverse an album in sound to pigeonhole it the way you did. I think this album has a pretty unique sound.
Frankly, I am already loving this album after one listen. The sound is just too big and heavenly to not like, and the melodies and beats really do a good job driving the music.
What's the point of even giving it a "strong" four? Sort of like saying, okay, this album is bad, but it could be worse? Why not just get rid of the numbers altogether and have your critique speak for itself.
Ironically, I thought your least favorite song on the album was one of the best, along with "Midnight City" of course.
I really liked this, but I loved the previous album. I sat and listened to it on vinyl first and the production really impressed me, the synth is so rich. Some songs are a little silly but I think I'm able to see past the forced-profound vocals. There were tracks like that on Saturdays = Youth (example being the line from Graveyard Girl "I'm fifteen years old and I feel it's already too late to live") and his lyrics in general are pretty cookie-cutter faux epic. Still, I'm really enjoying this.
"Wait" is really good (which you said), but I also think "Raconte-Moi Une Histoire" is really good (which you said was bad). I agree though that it tries to be super epic at times where its not good enough to be epic.
I have loved m83 and each of their records has a place in my heart, so I am excited to listen to this next one. Hopefully I disagree with your assessment.. I feel like, listening to your explanation, this music was more disliked on a 'personal-taste' level than an actual critical level. Any who, keep on posting these terrific videos.
I couldn't disagree more. I think this takes the sound they made great on Dawn - which kind of got lost on S=Y - and finds new life in it. Dead Cities is still M83's best album and an all-time favorite of mine, but this is a wonderful album! The narrative pieces work really well for me, and I can see how they wouldn't work for everyone, though.
man, really have to disagree on this. i think its a great album. even if most of its an 80's throw back, the production is great. And yes some of the stories are contribed but the other songs mway make up for it.. I didnt really like it at all due to the vocals the first few listens now i love it. Maybe you should give it another try. I give it a low/mid 7.
That's tight as hell homie...Dead End Hip Hop shirt. Officially the coolest white dude I know...hold on, you're Italian or something like that though right. Lol! Either way, appreciate that love man.
You NEVER like any of the narrative in any of their songs?!?! I happen to find the narrative on Car Chase Terror to be quite enjoyable. Adds an extra eerie element to the song
I'd like this better as instrumental. For me, the lyrics in this song is trying to be deeper meaningful then it needs to be. The enjoyment gets slightly blurred by this nagging urban philosophy. :/

Ouch. I am totally loving this album right now. This may be the most I've ever disagreed with you. That's cool though. I can dig it.

which ones did you think sounded like Animal Collective?

"Wait" is really good (which you said), but I also think "Raconte-Moi Une Histoire" is really good (which you said was bad). I agree though that it tries to be super epic at times where its not good enough to be epic.

I turned this album on and then suddenly I wasn't listening to this album.
Couldn't agree with you anymore.

Motion Sickness of Time Travel - Luminaries and Synastry
Raspberry Bulbs - Nature Tries Again
Both were released earlier in the year, but the former has easily won my personal AOTY recommendation and the latter is just a damn good listen.

I bet a bike messenger gave you that cut on your wrist....we all know you're spider-man Anthony.

man, really have to disagree on this. i think its a great album. even if most of its an 80's throw back, the production is great. And yes some of the stories are contribed but the other songs mway make up for it.. I didnt really like it at all due to the vocals the first few listens now i love it. Maybe you should give it another try. I give it a low/mid 7.

You NEVER like any of the narrative in any of their songs?!?! I happen to find the narrative on Car Chase Terror to be quite enjoyable. Adds an extra eerie element to the song
