It was actually President Washington who declared a day of Thanksgiving but the story that always get told is the Pilgrims and Indians having a brunch together

blumenthol: Actually Christmas and Easter were pagan holidays. I think it was the Catholic church who decided to celebrate Christ's birth on Christmas and the Resurrection on Easter. So basically the Christians butted into "their day" and are now trying to tell them it's "suppose to be about Christ." It's silly to complain because they had 363 other days to pick from. Then we wouldn't have the "mixture" of christian and pagan traditions that we do today..

@iamjustinmew In Ireland and other places it was the Harvest Festival or the equivilent. The Puritans were all directly from the UK - a year off the boat - they brought the idea with them.
