Talk about taking you back. I was there, me, the writer of this post. This is Duke Cable TV Project , 3/4 inch tape hand threaded on a reel to reel video deck. Switcher was in the band uniform closet backstage. See those fades in and out - that's about all the fancy effects we had. I was on camera #3, right under Bob Weir. The football team provided security, things got a little crowded up under the stage as the might went on. Dead at Duke, the best.
The real cool part of this video for a fan of this song is at about 0:24 when Bobby shows the band 12 fingers to make it a "starting" 12 beat "BIODTL", as you "experts" probably know.... they started it on many different counts and the "count" is rarely "seen" communicated... Let's not get caught up on the "technical" anomolies of a 32 1/2 year old recording, appreciate what we have been given, goofs!
where do all these killer videos come from????????? i see sooo many on youtube all the time! this is a great web site wish it was around when i was a kid
(I love the dead but I will humbly say this is not per say their best performance...maybe jerry could not hear himself...I think maybe his guitar was really out of tune...then again maybe he was uuuuuuuuu, medicated, yes, that Dr. just prescribed a bit too heavy of a dose)
Third tune of the set, microphones now working just exactly perfect for all three.....not much video of Jerry on this one (see him on Bertha!) and his solo is a bit subdued. But great to see....
hey now davecainf, It never ceased to amaze me how many times their equipment just did'nt work "exactly perfect". Sometimes I used to think that the roadies were real fuckups for that reason. Anyway just my opinion..........
@TheWilliamville , You are absolutely right! The difference is how many times can someone be fucked up before they turn into actual fuckups? This is no excuse for them not to do their job properly! Do you see my point?
I rather seem them play here than the duke basketball team

Ouch, Jerry's guitar was WAY off. The ending was painful to the ear.

Well actually the bands lost focus on this take during Garcias solo..... and ended on a rather tentative note .
