I just started watching this episode... when I heard the voice-over, I was like "that voice sounds really familiar". Then they panned out to show his character and it clicked that he was Gambon. I literally shouted "NO NO NO NO NOOOOOOOOO" and paused this episode. I hate him that much. I'm uncertain about whether to continue, but your positive review of his performance is encouraging me to brave it...
I get the Doctor Who episodes on iTunes (we buy a season pass and can download the episode the day after it airs). And I'd noticed the sound thing too...the music and sound effects drowned out a lot of the dialogue in the last season as well. I thought it might have been the iTunes files, but I guess not. They need to hire a different sound mixing guy.
My favorite thing about the episode was the way kazdan described the doctor... manipulating peoples lives to suit his own needs. for some reason the doctors dark side is always really interesting to see :D and his overall ruthlessness towards the people who stand against him is just plain shocking... gotta love him though xD :D
I just thought I'd mention that in fact at the end in, Abigail's song, she doesn't sing 'silence is falling'. what she actually sings is 'silence is all you see'
Kayley, you always end all your videos, save this one, with a very exciting, friendly and cute "Alons-y alonso" which is great. But the one in this video seems a bit lacklustred; probably due to your wondering whether you still say it or not. But great video, as usual.
There was no actual violation of time caused. The reapers were never summoned in their episode by Rose touching baby Rose, but by her saving her dad after not saving her dad (going back on her on timeline). Once there were around, the extra timey-wimey confusion caused by her touching the baby allowed it into the church.
watching this episode was like spending an hour twirling on a ferris wheel and then getting off with your head spinning trying to get your wits about you while the odd twinge of "what just happened?" crosses your mind. there was just too many incongruencies in this christmas special for it to make any sense. the fish were unecessary so was the space ship. steven moffat could have wrote a better story than this i know i could have even on a bad day.
All my friends failed to see the value in it because there was really no epic danger happenings going on, but being the character man i am, the development of young kazran paralleling the Doctor's own development with women i thought it was genius.
The magic trick failures were hilarious and i think this episode birthed a new nerd pickup line:
Approach female police officer and say "I'll be your roman soldier"
MYYYYYY explination as to why the two Kasrans were able to hug without time going kerflumple is because its only a slight paradox. Nothing to time and space shattering. As compared to when rose basically destroyed so many timelines with her actions of saving her father and put her self and the doctor in a sort of temporal pocket that was going to get eaten away. but theeeeen she came in contact wtih her baby self which was a paradox in a timeline that shouldn't exist. so it was just exacerbated.
An anagram for his name. Kazran Sardick. It seems so different, so particular. I'm trying to figure out if it's a reference to the original Christmas Carol, or maybe a clue to something later in the season like Abigail's song about The Silence. I'm not the best with anagrams so I'm checking to see if anyone else was on the same train of thought.
I can back this up with the fact that the controls on the sky controller machine thing didn't recognize Kazran after the Doctor had changed his timeline so much. He was just too different.
You could explain that whole 'two of the same object in different times' thing with what happened in the Big Bang episode: he touched the sonic screwdrivers and they sparked. But later in the SAME EPISODE, Amy hugged her younger self. My theory: Objects are capable of fundamentally changing what they are over time, while people, who 'change' every single day, could be, quite literally, a different person in the future.
Yeah, about plot holes when it comes to Dr. Who... I really don't care at all about rules. That's the point of Dr. Who, they give you so much to play with and enjoy that all the explanations you can make up yourself.
This to me was the best Christmas Special since The Runaway Bride, but to be honest it was the best one of all of them, because it was an actual Christmas story, instead of RTD's traditional BANG, BANG, BOOM! stories that took place during Xmas, but weren't Xmas stories.
The sound was bad for me too. I blamed it on watching the whole season all night then the episode (who years marathon on BBC America) though. What was with the clothes? If they explained it I missed that part.
Anyway, I thought this was a brilliant and as you would say 'pretty' episode, I just loved it! I totally agree with you saying it sounded real. I just agree with all of your opinions, especially about ten's first episode- it was pretty amazing, I also love me some Ten. Om nom.
My favorite bit was the failure of the psychic paper ("A lie too big") HA! Plus Rory and Amy's clothes... But the reference to the silence made me think maybe Omega is behind the Silence. Hmmmm. Gotta say, the bit with Kazran only is a problem with the Doctor crossing back and changing something in his timeline--but methinks we don't know enough of what that means to understand when rules are violated. Hand-waving? Maybe.
Blimey! Sorry, Christmas Eve on a rooftop, saw a chimney, my whole brain just went "What the hell!"...Just agree with me, cause i've only got two gos and then it's your turn...two gos?...two arms!...great episode, can't wait for April.
It went crazy with Rose because of the whole I saved my dad and ran past myself and them held myself as a baby. I figure the paradox isn't as bad seeing as Kazran didn't change unchangeable events and whatnot.....
I know it would have made for a sappy ending...but it didn't make much sense to me why the doctor didn't just cure her, it should have been pretty easy for him with his technology.
But other than that, it was a fantastic episode, I really liked it.
Since the series 5 finalle the doctor was looking for a new fez. There was a quick shot of him wearing a fez so I wonder what happened to that one. It must have been destroyed or lost otherwise he would have continued wearing it. As you can tell I'm one of the many fans who are obsessed with the bowtie and fez and soon stetson. Happy new year everyone!
I love watching your videos, kayley. It is so nice to have another person who feels the same way about things that are important to me, AHEM, doctor who... I also love me some ten...
liked the episode, not all the action and none of the doctorwhoness like some episodes.Michael Gambon is a beast, I think he makes an awesome Dumbledore.Hmmfh
Nice little explanation for the two Kazran's hugthatshouldhavecausedatimeexplosion: remember, because of the Doctor's meddling, Kazran's cloud machine didn't recognise his touch. Maybe time didn't either.
I don't really agree with "adapting it [the story] and making it more interesting." I think Dickens' original A Christmas Carol was still the better story between it and this Christmas special, but I think I get what you mean about it.
Kazran hugging his childhood self not being allowed wasn't something that RTD set up, it was written back in 1983, in the classic series episode 'Mawdryn Undead', in the Fifth Doctor Era. So yeah, I don't know how to end.....
@Myenkeiify it's logical that it was set up anyway, because it's a paradox to change the life of a version of your past self without changing your present self.
Did I sense some tension from Rori when he asked if the Doctor knew any Honeymoon spots, and then slamed the door to the Tardis and left Amy and the Doctor alone outside?
I wonder if the Doctor is going to send them off for their own little vacation? hmmm?
Sure, different Doctor Who writers aren't consistent with their predecessors, Moffat being no exception, but I reckon RTD is probably the only one who was inconsistent with himself, so...yeah.
I wasn't sure about the episode at first because it wasn't action packed, but the more I look back on it the more my fondness grows. Overally very good.
I would describe the costumes as Charles Dickens, since it is A Christmas Carol after all.
Over all the Christmas episode is what is ti, a christmas episode, and even though I enjoyed it, I will probable not watch it again, like I do with the rest of the series. I still find it strange what every year there is a christmas episode, when years ago, if a show did a christmas episode it was the last show of the series.
I honestly did not like the special all that much, there was way too much CGI in the episode which made it seem more than unreal. And then the fact that i did not care for the story as you would need to connect with the characters and i still have not been able to connect with Matt Smith in the slightest. Honest to say the only thing i actually enjoyed about the episode was Katherine Jenkins when she sang.
I loved the Christmas Special so much. I don't care if Steven Moffat has dumped the thing about changing history and stuff. I think that's really the whole point of Eleven- he doesn't care :)
"I wear the bow tie and I don't care... that's why it's cool."- Eleven (A Christmas Carol)
@008wombatable Agreed, I am seeing something along the lines of a greenscreen, the opening of doctor who, the tardis flying through space, and Rosiana and Kayley jumping around... too cheesy? :P
Insinuated Roleplay was kinda hot! Agreed xD I would have loved to see more Amy/Rory in the episode however, the christmas specials always tend to get rid of the companions for that episode (most of the time the doctor finds someone and takes them along) so I consider it lucky that we got to see as much as we did of Amy and Rory!
I just sort of consider the 11 regeneration as an entirely new re-imagination of Doctor Who, and there are thematic references to that in The Eleventh Hour, and also in the emphasis on the Doctor's "death" at the end of the series 4 specials. Also, new screwdriver, new tardis, new Doctor, new head writer - all of the ways that series 5 cordoned itself off from the previous series sort of made it ok for me that the Kazrans hugged.
@TashaChoudhury Please do tell, the new "season" is rollin around, and I can't wait to get a jump start on it instead of waiting a week for it to roll around
I was so excited when Rory and Amy came on in the beginning. It felt like I hadn't seen them in forever. The Doctor was great as always. I had loved David Tennants quick intelligent babble that he would do and I liked how Matt had some of that. I really like Matt Smith but I don't get the same feeling watching him as I did with David. I think it was Davids energy. A very good episode though and I can't wait for easter.
I think not being able to hear dialogue because of background noise has to do with the change from England to America because I've found the same thing when I watch it on T.V.
For the two Kazran's touching, I like to think that only happens when time is kind of messed up because that's only ever happened when a) the Reapers were causing havoc (Rose holding baby Rose) and b) time was falling apart (two sonic screwdrivers) Unless I'm missing another time it happened.
I'm really sad that Amy and Rory wasn't in it that much. Rory was my favourite character last season because you got to see him change and grow up through out it but from the moments that Rory was in it he was kind of annoying and clingy and needy again. I really hope that changes.
I absolutely loved teenaged Kazran, he was soo adorable! I have a new Doctor Who crush now! <3
The whole episode was so funny! I really prefer Moffat's writing over RTD, soo I'm really excited for season 6! :D
@Lindsquee Moffat did write some of the best episodes for Davies' era, much to the arguement of Davies fanboys, Moffats episodes were considered THE best.
He is both a worthy successor and unique showrunner and writer in his own right.
All this mumbo jumbo about breaking the rules Davies had set is bull**** because there are no rules when it comes to this show, that much has been said by Davies himself, that each showrunner makes their own who.
It was my first TV DW, too! But I didn't like how it was less action-y. I like the episodes more when the Doctor has more of life-threatning experiences. Not that I want him to die, or anything, but I just find those episodes are more interesting. The ones that make me jump with scary monsters are also some of my favorites, and this one lacked monsters (unless you count the shark, which I don't). But I do like how Kazran was seeing his childhood happen, through the pictures, as it was happening.
I totally missed the roleplay insiuation the first time round. Probably because I kept trying to understand what they were saying! Seriously. You aren't alone, I couldn't hear a thing, I had to rewatch it the other day to catch half the dialogue.
I'm excited for next season! Can we get a *mini* review on the trailer, possibly?
I think the dialogue being lost was a problem with your broadcast, or something, because I didn't have that problem, and I watched it on BBCA as well.
Also, I think that them touching was only a problem in Father's Day was because the Reapers were already there. I just rewatched Father's Day yesterday, and it seemed to me like that was only a serious problem because it caused just a bit more weakness that allowed the Reapers to get through the church, but I could be completely wrong.
Well I think there is a way around that wibblily wabbaly time thingy by stating that when Rose saved her father's life caused a paradox that the Doctor didn't prepare for. So when Rose held herself it made the paradox even worse. Without the TARDIS the Doctor couldn't fix it like he did in the Christmas episode. Also keep in mind that DT's Doctor bumped into his earlier self during Time Crash. I thought it was a fantastic Doctor Who story and I am a sucker for a good Christmas Story.
The dialogue thing plagued me all series, until I went HD. I remember first time I saw Eleventh Hour, I was so confused because I couldn't hear so much.
I didn't catch the part where she sings "Silence is falling." Was it in the song she sings at the end? I only heard her singing something like "Silence is all around" or "Silence is all you know," I couldn't quite tell...
Don't see what everyone's problem with the hugging is, it's pretty simple: The cracks in the universe have basically cleared the decks, wiping out a lot of RTD lore, giving Moffat freedom to write. OR, when the time lords came back at the end of time maybe this altered the barriers between the universes. Or something. Or a giant invisible duck ate them all. I dunno. I didn't get hung up on it.
If we are going to go all paradoxical then what about when Amy is trying to figure out the year at the beginning of The Big Bang and touches Amelia's head and hair. Besides Fathers Day I don't really care about paradoxes.
"insinuated roleplaying" Oh my god I'm so glad you mentioned that. When they first came out I was like mmm yes. unf. I'm so so excited for the new season.
i agree, this is probably my favorite eleven episode as well. it was so creative and acted superbly. I really feel like matt smith came into his own in this episode. and i also loved being able to watch it ON CHRISTMAS! hooray bbcamerica!
Also I think sound issues were just you/BBC America. I obviously can't speak for everyone but the sound was good on BBC One here in the UK! It was good on iPlayer too, I thought.
interesting most people think Abigail was singing "Silence is falling". It was actually "Silence is all you see/you'll be". Theres a clip of just the song and also the lyrics taken from the episodes subtitles on Life, Doctor Who & Combom (search for Abigail's song and the article will pop up).
Also I don't see the hugging as inconsistent. Time was broken in FD, and we saw Amy touch Amelia in the Big Bang. I think its because the kids never grow up to be the older versions. If that makes sense.
@andythehouseelf The whole hugging thing had been bugging me and your explanation makes me get how it could work. Now that won't be all I see when I watch. *squee*
@andythehouseelf But if you remember in Father's Day neither did Rose, becouse her father was alive so that means she would grow up to be a diferent person.
Doctor Whom. I mean Who. I know you've probably not watched it yet, but I won't divulge anything important to the storyline. Dumbledore was good. The concept for the episode was good, and was carried out very well. Could have been a bit better. I'm still on the hedge about Matt maybe the next series will be good with him. Karen Gillan was alright I suppose, no Billie. The "Next time" looked absolutely amazing. They've set the tone quite dark again I think. River Song looks amazing but I love her
I thought the episode was fantastic. Definitely one of my favourite xmas specials - probably beating xmas invasion, but still not quite as utterly brilliant as Voyage of the Damned.
I said it after The Big Bang, and now having another episode to kind of reiterate I can finally confirm it: I think 11 may actually have overtaken 10 in my head. There. I said it. *hides*
I liked how the episode wasn't explosive or action-packed like the previous ones have been. It was quieter, under-stated and beautiful, I thought. Which totally suits Smith's Doctor who is very witty, verbal and intellectual. Tennant's Doctor was much more dynamic.
One thing that bothered me was that it seemed that all the places they took Abigail were on Earth... Just a little thing though!
@JordiekinsxxReal Series 6 is gonna be divided into two, with a break for summer in between. So, it starts around Easter, goes for seven weeks, breaks until the fall and starts back up.
Also, in the centre-season break, we'll learn who River is :O
@TheNicoleMarion can we finally found out who River is and then get rid of her? I find her so irritating, although her character is rather intriguing :)

I just sort of consider the 11 regeneration as an entirely new re-imagination of Doctor Who, and there are thematic references to that in The Eleventh Hour, and also in the emphasis on the Doctor's "death" at the end of the series 4 specials. Also, new screwdriver, new tardis, new Doctor, new head writer - all of the ways that series 5 cordoned itself off from the previous series sort of made it ok for me that the Kazrans hugged.

mandyontopoftheworld 1 year ago
@mandyontopoftheworld Not to worry, with both of them set to be mains for the next series, we really can expect a lot more out of them.
ESPECIALLY judging from that trailer, it seems to concentrate heavily on Amy and Rory's involvement in the events to come.
CAN'T WAIT FOR APRIL! D=

A very good episode though and I can't wait for easter.
unsignedletters 1 year ago
@unsignedletters Too much running through corridors with Tennant.
He WAS my favourite Doctor up until Smith though.
Everyone does say that you have your OWN Doctor and Smith is mine.
He is well suited to the role.
Thing is, Eccleston was gone by the end of his first series, so no one really grew to care for him as much.
When Tennant came in, I was VERY uncertain but over the next 3 series and the Specials I grew to love him.
You see, you need to let them grow on you.
Smith has grown on me. =D

of course it's going to be revisited, Moffet is all about repetition. He's only had like 2 or 3 new ideas so far

Amy touched herself as well. Doctor Who is meant to be consistent, and its not. Steven Moffat doesn't even understand time travel properly.
DONOTWANTplease 1 year ago
@DONOTWANTplease Actually, you've got it wrong.
Had you seen some of the older series' and all of the RTD era and now Moffat's, there's one thing you can deduce, WHO was NEVER consistent.
They were ALWAYS throwing around different theories of time travel.
Just because Davies brought back who, that doesn't mean he set the rules.
There are NO RULES when it comes to time travel and the Doctor himself.
The Doctor might say there is rules but really, no one pays much notice to them, not even himself.
andyot7777 1 year ago
@andyot7777 If Doctor Who was a good show, it would keep some consistency.
DONOTWANTplease 1 year ago
@DONOTWANTplease Time travel is never consistent. All theories are relevant.
The only consistent thing in the show is the Doctor himself, always having a companion, aliens and time travel.
The theories used may not be consistent but none of them are incorrect and none are used moreso than another.
Besides, you said IF it was a good show.
If it were bad, it'd get cancelled like the rest of the shows that only last a few seasons.
1963-1989, a break, a movie in 1998, new series in 2005 to current.
andyot7777 1 year ago
@andyot7777 hmm. Red Dwarf had a better understanding of time travel than Doctor Who does now. Lol.

I think not being able to hear dialogue because of background noise has to do with the change from England to America because I've found the same thing when I watch it on T.V.
For the two Kazran's touching, I like to think that only happens when time is kind of messed up because that's only ever happened when a) the Reapers were causing havoc (Rose holding baby Rose) and b) time was falling apart (two sonic screwdrivers) Unless I'm missing another time it happened.
idefine777 1 year ago
@idefine777 It only happened because Rose changed something fixed in time.
The Reapers appeared because she saved Pete when he wasn't supposed to.
The further act of touching her younger self only made the barrier weaker, allowing them in.
With Kazdan, he retained the memories of both his "timelines", the original and tnew one the Doctor caused.
YOUNGER Kazdan wasn't technically touching HIS older self so much as he was touching ONE possibly future he had.
Cause that future wasn't set just yet.

Lindsquee 1 year ago
@Lindsquee Moffat did write some of the best episodes for Davies' era, much to the arguement of Davies fanboys, Moffats episodes were considered THE best.
He is both a worthy successor and unique showrunner and writer in his own right.
All this mumbo jumbo about breaking the rules Davies had set is bull**** because there are no rules when it comes to this show, that much has been said by Davies himself, that each showrunner makes their own who.
And each fan has their own Who and "rules".
andyot7777 1 year ago 3
It was my first TV DW, too! But I didn't like how it was less action-y. I like the episodes more when the Doctor has more of life-threatning experiences. Not that I want him to die, or anything, but I just find those episodes are more interesting. The ones that make me jump with scary monsters are also some of my favorites, and this one lacked monsters (unless you count the shark, which I don't). But I do like how Kazran was seeing his childhood happen, through the pictures, as it was happening.

Very very accurate review.

I just rewatched Father's Day yesterday, and it seemed to me like that was only a serious problem because it caused just a bit more weakness that allowed the Reapers to get through the church, but I could be completely wrong.
pythonfan001 1 year ago
Well I think there is a way around that wibblily wabbaly time thingy by stating that when Rose saved her father's life caused a paradox that the Doctor didn't prepare for. So when Rose held herself it made the paradox even worse. Without the TARDIS the Doctor couldn't fix it like he did in the Christmas episode. Also keep in mind that DT's Doctor bumped into his earlier self during Time Crash. I thought it was a fantastic Doctor Who story and I am a sucker for a good Christmas Story.

whitefluffyhat 1 year ago
Don't see what everyone's problem with the hugging is, it's pretty simple: The cracks in the universe have basically cleared the decks, wiping out a lot of RTD lore, giving Moffat freedom to write. OR, when the time lords came back at the end of time maybe this altered the barriers between the universes. Or something. Or a giant invisible duck ate them all. I dunno. I didn't get hung up on it.
playingonmypeachtree 1 year ago 2
:0 I've had Abigail's Song stuck in my head since christmas day, but my brain just didn't make the 'silence' connection. *BRAINCHAOS*

If we are going to go all paradoxical then what about when Amy is trying to figure out the year at the beginning of The Big Bang and touches Amelia's head and hair. Besides Fathers Day I don't really care about paradoxes.

interesting most people think Abigail was singing "Silence is falling".
If that makes sense.
andythehouseelf 1 year ago
@andythehouseelf The whole hugging thing had been bugging me and your explanation makes me get how it could work. Now that won't be all I see when I watch. *squee*

@andythehouseelf But if you remember in Father's Day neither did Rose, becouse her father was alive so that means she would grow up to be a diferent person.

I agree. There really needed to be more Amy and Rory ^^ I loved when the Doctor was like "Why are you wearing that?"
Moffatt's inconsistency was definitely annoying.
