  • I Was Just @ EPCOT From November 14th -November 19th...And I Finally Went On Mission Space...I Asked Many Folks That Worked At Epcot If They Remembered Horizons And NONE Of Them Did...@#$*& ! I Can't Believe That ! I Created A Myspace Dedicated To Horizons...Check It Out...It Has And ALWAYS Will Be My Most Very Favorite Theme Ride EVER!

  • What side of Future World is this ride on, I can never seem to find it then I simply forget ti ride it LOL.

  • Great video! My favorite extinct attraction by far, and this video does a wonderful job of bringing back such wonderful memories. Now, if you could just insert the smell of oranges, it would be perfect! ;)

  • @WDWRadio What are these oranges you speak of? I only know of Loranges.

  • Awesome video of an awesome awe inspiring attraction!

  • God, I do miss this ride. Mission:Space is definitely a worthy replacement. But this ride was always really special to me at Epcot. I miss it.

  • WOW such a beautiful song!

  • thank you for this :) nostalgia overload indeed.

im going in August... I'll be thinking of this. agreed about The Seas With Nemo. incredibly flat.

  • At the time that I'm viewing this video there are 3 thumbs down... how is this possible? Horizons was/is one of the best rides EPCOT has ever had. I'm having a nostalgia overload right now :'-)

  • Space is the new horizon... Just wish Mission space was more of a horizons type ride with some motion scenes like star tours and not some crappy simulator.

  • This was my favorite ride at WDW. Then one time when I went to EPCOT it was closed. I was devestated.

  • you see that logo? thats the logo for trioptimum... look it up

  • Too many of the new rides lack the "soul" that Horizons and World of Motion (among others) had. Love the music too.

  • I've Never Really Went on Horizons, but I agree with everyone that Horizons looks way better than Misson Space, they need to have some old rides back in EPCOT and I would give anything to go on that ride

  • I miss the EPCOT cheesiness of it all!

  • @ 4:49 - The earliest version of Skype?

  • Horizons was amazing I was upset when they closed it.

  • for some reason the begining of this video makes me cry, i am not joking im crying

  • @PastelStudios It's the '80s soundtrack music, darling :*(

  • At least Mission: Space works as an EPCOT attraction....The Seas with Nemo and Friends is an EPIC FAIL. Blame Eisner.

  • I also blame the public. We lovers of Classic Epcot are a dying breed. Sadly the majority of people out there want roller coasters and things with a commercial appeal (Seas with Nemo) and Disney needs customers to stay open. Just the thought of 'learning' something while having fun at the same time is just too much for most people to handle. I'm just happy I was able to enjoy Horizons when I had the chance, and I hope with all my heart that the park returns to the magic it once was.

  • I wish I could have seen Horizons. I agree. The true factor is our dumbed down society. I do have optimism though. What Siemens did to Spaceship Earth is great. The new Project Tomorrow: Inventing the Wonders of the Future exhibit is fun yet educational. Very innovative. It's also the first time in years that ALL of the post ride area has been used. IBM's Smarter Planet ehanced Innoventions too. Plus Sum of All Thrills requires riders to use math. Here's hoping there's more to come!

  • I myself miss the old Spaceship Earth compared to the new one. The entire second half of the ride with the touch screen isn't close to the ending it used to have, and is only marginally fun the first time around. Once you've done it, it's nothing the second time onward. It belongs somewhere else, but not in the ride itself. I miss the futuristic landscape, the lights and lasers beaming overhead, and the entire feeling the old ending had. I also do not like the new dumbed down narration. Terrible

  • @Kai0nTheMoon Someone died...That prompts change...

  • @Legionere If they closed down everything that someone died on, there would be no airlines, subway systems, cruise lines, and countless theme park rides. Your comment is irrelevant.

  • The ending of the newest Spaceship Earth is just not epic enough. They could have just easily put this new touchscreen part of this ride at the end of the show area.

  • @Kai0nTheMoon I love Mission Space but would give anything to ride Horizons again. I hear ya! I absolutly HATE the look of Tomorrowland as well. Not a look of the future at all! Can't BELIEVE they took down those beautiful waterfalls at the entrance either! I think they have enough room to bring the old rides back!

  • @Kai0nTheMoon Yeah I agree with you. If anything changed society is what killed EPCOT Center. I like Epcot but in my perfect world I would have the perfect mixture of thrilling rides that represent the EPCOT theme well, like Mission Space, and the rides that teach you in a more inspirational way, like Horizons, and Spaceship Earth.

  • @rohirrim11rider No! Blame John Lasseter!! The cheif prinicipal advisor for walt disney Imagineering!

  • @rohirrim11rider Ahh, Horizons reminds me of the perfect time before people started saying "epic fail".

  • 0:34 . Amazing, inspiring artwork, awesome musical cue to accompany it!

Anyone know if it's possible to get prints of that mural? (The Prologue and the Promise, Bob McCall).

  • When did this close? This looks amazing - i hate Mission Space, makes me feel too sick to ride. Love things like this, proper Disney things, like Caroussel of Progress.

  • Horizons closed January 9, 1999.

  • i want to smell the oranges again. =[

  • Another sign that the 80's was a great decade. We keep tryin to improve on it but fail miserably...

  • can anyone tell me where to find that smell of orenges?

  • @PastelStudios Open a box of Fruit Loops and have good, long whiff. Close your eyes. Click your heels. There's no place like Horizons. There's no place like Horizons. There's no place like Horizons. Orangedy smells of the future past will come back to you. . . .

  • @onedollarphilistine ha ha !!! I miss this ride soooo much! It's what EPCOT was all about! Those grave stones at the Epcot entrance...The new Tomorrowland looks like crap... That NEMO thing in The Living Seas...The new boat ride in Mexico, SERIOUSLY????so many changes to an Epic Fail!!!!

  • mission space is gay i hate it they should of left horizons because thats what epcot was supposed 2 be about

  • Comment removed

  • very true The School World! Disney is still growing. but so many people judge epcot before going there! they're idiots and think that epcot is not for kids, just older guests! Ok, yeah... WALT DISNEY WORLD is going to create and build a park thats not for kids! i work for WDW and i hear this all the time! i like mission:space but HORIZONS was the BEST!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • what do the orenges smell like?

  • The sad truth is,,,,,The Disney organization has lost the passion that built it....They have become like any other corporation....The only thing that matters to them is the botton line........

  • I loved this ride but it was becoming dated. Something had to be done. I just think they should have remodelled it and re-imagined the future instead of tearing it down completely. These slow moving rides are far more inspiring and stay with you longer than the thrill rides.

  • This was another huge mistake by Disney, getting rid of this ride. A damn shame.

  • I can still smell the oranges as you go through the desert crops.

  • almost ten years later, and my response is still:

"WHY THE FUCK DID THEY DEMOLISH THIS RIDE?"

    ahead of its time? definitely.

  • misson space

  • that makes me sick to think that a cheap simulator ride replaced an amazing ride with amazingly huge diagrams. That ride was for everyone they could of took away 24th centry and just made it horizons. Maby the wonders of life pavilion will hold the reincarnation of horizons.

  • i love the theme song

  • I just returned from Disney World yesterday. Boy do I miss this ride. Thank you for the memorial video. Well done.

The Cool Club, Coke's little shop with tastes of Coke products from around the world was on fire when we were leaving the park, which we thought was rather ironic.

  • they should have never removed this ride. i think disney would have been better if they expanded instead of remodeled.

  • this ride along with the old Journey into Imagination are the most missed attractions probably ever, check out my channel I made Journey into Imagination and Horizons in RCT3

  • don't forget about food rocks!

  • yep

  • For example: imagine a ride that teaches a little kid about what happens inside his body when he's got the chicken pox....or a ride dedicated to the five senses.

Sigh. I guess the imagineers don't take their kids to the science museum very much.

  • The thing that bugs me at Epcot is that they have strayed from the original purpose: showcasing science. I'm 26. I remember when they opened Wonders of Life.....now that attraction is shut down and sitting there when they could be making a buttload of money by stimulating the customer's MIND as well as thrilling him.

  • Bring the ride back.

  • No, my friend, don't just "bring it back". Update it and make it better and more enjoyable for today's children.

  • This was the best ride in Epcot. It embodied the true theme of Future World. Why on Earth would they get rid of this ride? They should bring it back.

  • Easier said than done. Disney will never bring an extinct attraction back. The reason for it's removal..is money, pure and simple. Disney is always lookin to cut costs, as is every company. Mission: SPACE makes Epcot more profitable because it's a popular thrill ride..Horizons lacked thrill. However, it seems these days they really don't care about holding onto true classics and nostalgia. Its unfortunate for the die hard fans and the ones who will never experience such a great ride as Horizons.

  • You are right. It is all about the profit, and there is no way they will bring it back. But I do remember going to Epcot back in the day, and there was rarely a line for Horizons. Mission Space is definitely more popular. So although us die hard Disney fans know that Horizons was a much better attraction, the general Epcot visitor probably likes a thrill ride like Mission Space better unfortunately.

  • Sadly, Disney doesn't seahorse around when it comes to profits and staying in the black. just look at the raping of animated disney classics via terrible straight-to-DVD sequals. Horizons, Epcot, etc was part of Walt's dream and serious plans for the future. Now, it's all about surviving the present.

  • Amazing! I love the beginning! In one of the Innovetions buildings (maybe one of the buildings that leads you to the Land, they had a museum and it had the robot at 1:36 in it... it was a tribute to all the Disney rides that are no longer....

  • The good thing is that there are people who record this stuff and share it on Youtube then post it. This makes us look back what was lost and makes us remember it again.

  • iT'S VERY SAD. ALL THE PEOPLE WHO DIED THINKING THIS WAS TO BE THE FUTURE. G W BUSH RUINED ALL.

  • thanks just got back from epcot, missed horizons, world of motion and the old journey into imagination, missed the smell of the oranges in horizons, either im getting old or the stuff they are replacing these great rides with is boring

  • couldn't agree more!!

  • As a 16yearold, I thoroughly miss this attraction.

  • I remember this ride from when I was little. I thought it was so cool that I could smell the oranges in the field. I loved this, I wish they would bring it back.

  • I LOVE Mission Space, but we really need to bring back Horizons! My kids never got to see it and I miss it soo much! Getting rid of Horizons is like getting rid of the Carousel of Progress:-(

  • Awesome ride. It will be missed!!

  • Reportedly, one of the reasons they closed it was that a sink hole formed underneath the building and there was huge structural damage. In order to keep the ride, the whole building would have to be demolished and rebuilt. I'm not sure if this is true or not but Florida is known for it's sink holes from time to time.

  • It wasnt this ride that has that problem Universe of energy has one I know I see where they control the water levels underneath it. And there was a restaurant next to test track (cant member the name) that has that problem thats why its nto used and only for special events.

  • favorite that shit!

  • My teacher went to Epcot in 1994 and it was closed.

  • Wow, I love the cooking robot. Would be great to have one of those.

  • fabulous!!!!! Very loved and very missed.

  • Great vid - the remark about the oranges made me laugh - oh the good old days

  • Arent some of the props at Walt Disney Disney Studios Paris ? And isnt the old Horizons Logo in Mission:Space ?

  • where was this?

  • Horizons was to Epcot like Back to the Future the Ride was to Universal Studios

  • It seems as though Disney doesn't create detailed and elaborate attractions very often, if at all anymore.

  • I never got to ride it, but i wish it was there still so i could. It looks like an awesome attraction.

  • Best ride ever. Im so sad it's gone! I cried the first time i watched this video. Mission Space will never compare to this attraction. It had a great message and a timeless theme to it. It will be well missed

"New Horizons for you and for me..."

  • I agree...Mission Space will never be as good as Horizons. I miss this ride. :(

  • I just checked out this video as I was telling someone about the robots I had built for the art deco scene. Maybe they are on E bay now?

  • I remember this ride sorta, I was really young when I rode this. It closed whe I was 5

  • I LOVED this ride! That part with the teacher and the students in the underwater colony will be burned into my brain forever.

I always wished the world would turn into something like the vision of the future it presented.

  • I always remembered Brava Centauri, it'd be cool if life was like Horizons...

  • i miss the old epcot, now disney ruined it all with test track, mission space, and remodelating some other atractions, i miss horizons, world of motion and the original journey to imagination! :(

  • me too

  • me also!

  • Where'd you get the great audio?

  • This is the one ride I was most excited about when I was in Epcot at 4 years old...but it was closed that day...v_v

I didn't know there was a Metropolis clip shown on the ride! That's my favorite movie!

  • They could of kept it going if they wanted to but they gotten people in the company who became greedy and I know Walt would of fire them for being greedy and not doing their job in keeping families that visit the theme parks happy.

  • I think Disney can do thrill rides well. I love Test Track, personally. But Mission: Space is nothing but a flop. Hardly a thrill ride, I find Mission: Space dull and unimaginative. It's "cool" when you lift off, but that's about it.

Disney does their animatronics rides the best, it's true. I love Spaceship Earth now, but I barely remember Horizons.

"It's always fun looking back on tomorrow." I love that!

  • Man, bring back Horizons. "thrill seekers" can go to Universal........

  • Dido that!

  • Make that Islands of Adventure

  • What a pity my Grandaughters will never experience this ride. They have also ruind Energy, restore the original . Ellen OUT !!!!

  • The whole point of horizons was looking back on tomorrow!!!. They just had to add another bit, not trash the whole thing!!!!

The history was accurate so far, so why ditch it all? I was sad to hear that Horizons had gone, as it was one of the main reasons for me wanting to take my daughter to see EPCOT.

Thank god i found this youtube glimpse... i showed my daughter, and she loved it.

  • Thank you for sharing this! I hadn't been to EPCOT for 14 years... and was in 2nd grade when I had been last. I vaguely remembered this ride, but it had been so long ago that I had no idea what happened to it, only remembering small scenes. I got shivers down my back watching this and KNEW this is the ride I missed, sad to see it is knocked down.

I love Mission:Space and wish that Universe of Energy was gutted instead of this classic Disney attraction!

  • Does anyone know what disney did with all the things from this ride? The scenes and the audioanimatronic people?

  • they say some of the props were transfered to be on display at disneyland paris and tokyo disney. some imagineers took some props too. i think in the backlot resturant at MGM there are a few things on display even.

  • What year was this video shot?

  • Thanks for taking us back to the future. Great memories. *sniff*

  • like many have said - this was the very best ride at epcot back in the beginning - I used to live in Orlando and must have been on this ride several hundered times - I remember it clearly and miss it. Mission Space isn't half of what this was. Thanks for posting the video.

  • When disney changes stuff it makes me so sad :-(

  • 7:58 = best part of the ride.

    R.I.P.

    Horizons

  • i just got back from disney today, that was my first visit to disney since i was 6 and the only thing i remembered was a ride that you could smell the orange on, i looked all over for this ride, only to discover its gone forever. its sad, i lost a part of my childhood.

  • Why does Disney have to ruin a good thing...they should listen to their fans and bring this back ASAP! and also bring back the original Journey to Imagination! Don't tamper with a great thing.

  • I so agree about imagination! They ruined it!! its boring now! But you have to admit Mission Space is a cool ride!!

  • Hahaha omg!! So awesome

  • I agree that was my favorite ride of all time I couldent believe when it was gone

  • Great vid - the remark about the oranges made me laugh - oh the good old days

  • Oh yeah! I'm sad I'll never experience that again.

  • Just came back from disney and little by little there ruining it they changed spaceship earth, they changed the mexico ride, and a few other rides they changed for the worse

  • Ha Ha! I MISS the oranges!!!! AND choosing my own ending! (Not like that new Spaceship Earrth....that one is not as cool)

  • Check out the difference of land near Mission: SPACE and Horizons on this photo fading by.

    HORIZONS 1983 - 1999

  • Horizons' theme song is definely impressive and wonderful!!!!

  • The beginning is 100% wonderful!

  • Awesome!!

  • This ride is legend! Amazing job with the video, great sound quality and video.

    Nobody died on Horizons >_>

  • yea! Mission Space is just a cheap budget!

  • There is a Horizons' omnimover vehicle on Ebay right now. The sight of it brings back fierce memories.

Great job on this video. I think I've watched it about 15 times already!

  • I dont like all the changes Disney has made to Epcot. First was Horizons, now it's the wand, next thing we know they'll replace Soarin. If they replace Soarin' I'll go sue Disney!

  • lol not! but i will get mad!

  • The wand was awful, glad to see it go! Now just gut the wonders of life and rebuild Horizons inside! There is plenty of room!

    Bring back the REAL EPCOT!

  • oh ok.

  • what was Horizons?

  • Horizons is probably the single attraction I miss the most at Disney World. Mission: Space really cannot compare.

  • What a great feeling ride of optimism! Easily

one of the classic Disney rides. Truth is sinkholes were doing the building in, so they

had to knock the whole building down and do

    the test track.

  • um world of motion got replaced by test track. horizons got replaced by mission space

  • This is also making me cry =[ It talks about taking a trip into the 21st century and what it could've been - but wasn't.

  • constant war is the future. and right now is nothing compared to whats coming. there will be no massive space or ocean exploration and colonization. sons and daughters will be fighting wars, not exploring the universe.

  • Well, there will be ocean exploring and colonization, but it will be to the benefit of corporations; not to all of mankind.

  • I agree Bring Back Horizens good ride.

  • Mission:Space is nothing more than a big budget "cheap" thrill ride. BRING BACK HORIZONS!

  • Prior to every Disney trip my family takes I pull out an old cassette tape I have titled "The Official Album of Disneyland and Walt Disney World" and listen to all of the "retired" sounds of the theme parks (not all are retired but those are the ones that mean the most). And when "New Horizons" starts playing I get misty..."have you ever dreamed the dreams of the chilldrreen?"

  • I used to have that tape. My brother and I would listen to it constantly. We even had a routine while we sang along with "Makin' Memories". I wish I knew where that tape is now.

  • Fantastic. Thanks for bringing back a great memory.

  • Horizons was a great atraction in the best of Disney classic tradition. I miss it a lot every time I go to Epcot. Boooooooh for Mission:Space!

Thanks a lot for posting it.

  • Horizons was the best Epcot attraction ever. I miss it SO much.

  • i am crying watching this vid!

  • Wow, this edit is much better than the raw footage I've seen. Really brings the wonder of this attraction back to life.

  • i enjoy mission space but these parks have no identity , nor tradition . its a sad fact of how things have become

  • Horizons was definitely one of my favorite rides in all of Disney World..I still can't believe those jerks did away with it. As I watch this video, I'm both happy and sad..happy because I get to relive the ride in a way, but sad because watching a video is not the same as being there and going on the ride, which I'll never be able to do again. The beginning of the video where they show Mission Space and it then transforms into Horizons with the music almost makes me wanna cry.

  • I wish I could have gone on this. It was already closed by the time I finally went to Disney World in 2001. Oh well. At least I got to go on the old version of the Living Seas.

  • Wow, amazing video - thanks for bring back some cherished memories of my childhood!! This ride was absolutely amazing and was the only ride at Epcot that explored every aspect of the park's original theme and intention. Sadly, most of that original Epcot spirit has been lost in favor of thrills and adding things that are more marketable and accessable to families. Thrills are great, but there never will be anything like Horizons again.

  • This is beautifully shot. I really loved this ride. "great big beautiful tomorrow...", the orange grove scent...

  • Amazing how some of these old rides about the future come true over time. I remember in May 1979 in Space Montain they where talking about something like today's DVDs

  • I used to take my son on this ride, we would immediately go back up to the front and ride again, about 10 times. You can still buy the orange scent spray at Trader Joe's and it brings back memories.

  • Where is Trader Joe's and how can I get some of that orange scented spray? I would love to bring that memory to life again. Any help from anyone would be greatly appreciated.

  • They have a website, maybe one of the stores listed can send you some.

  • i can only say thank you, so much changes in this world and its a shame this did, i saw this ride on my first visit to orlando in 89 and it just made my trip so magical, just make me smile to see it again, i can almost feel the warm air outside as we go up the ramp into the ride :)

  • Thank You

  • wow. i always remembered that sayin even after they replaced the ride.

i fet liek i was 6 yrs old again watching this

  • i miss this ride so much... childhood memories.... thanks for the vid

  • Thank you so much for this.

  • I like the little nod to "Carousel of Progress" with the girl talking to the holographic friend.

  • thx for this grat video! I was just 4 years old when i was on this ride and i couldn't remember it. I thank you very much I loved this ride at that time.(5*)

  • Thanks so much for this! Was just in Disney last week and never have gotten over them taking this ride out of Epcot! I always loved it! You made my day!

  • OMG! i've been looking for this ride forever like the name of it and everything. i finally found it. omg i loved this ride, i loved at the end you could pick where you wanted to go. great memories. i hate mission space. why did they have to replace this wonderful ride with something so awful?

  • Cost. It was simply too awesome. Once it lost sponsorship, it went into a transient existence of being open and closed until finally Disney made up some mess about a sink-hole and the roof and demo'd it.

  • Disney doesn't go running to the Orlando Sentential unless its for their positive PR. Demolitions are almost never announced. The demo of Horizons was so unpopular that they had to come up with a reason that didn't make them out to be greedy villains. Fact is, Mission:Space is cheap compared to Horizons. It's an industrial metal barn with a fancy facade. Throw in some spinning arms, a neat video...DONE.

Horizons was massive and the upkeep was staggering.

  • Mission Space was one of the most expensive rides in Disney History. It was a little less than double what Expedition Everest costed. I don't think you can say Mission Space was cheap.

  • Both Mission Space and Expedition Everest costs were around 100 million. They are very equal in cost! At the end of the video, that's how they got Mission Space out of this ride. You travel in space? So, Mission Space is born out of Horizons.

  • Mission: Space is faaaaaaaaaaar from cheap. The fact is, Disney tried appealing to a younger audience with rides like Test Track and Mission: Space. They sacrificed wholesome quality attractions with short thrill fixes. But Mission: Space is saving Disney money? Yea right...

  • I just wish you included the part where the family gathers together---in hologram form, because of distance---to celebrate a birthday.

  • Funny, WDW always brags about the blessing of size but they couldn't find room to keep this amazing, innovative and inspiring attraction. How very sad that Disney can double their prices in the last decade but they can afford to maintain these grand attractions. The only vision Disney has anymore is seeing your wallet empty, how very, very sad.

  • Great trip down memory lane. Thanks!

  • Beautiful--this video stirred up memories of Horizons that I didn't even consciously know I had anymore. I've been watching it over and over again. Boy, did EPCOT lose something spectacular when it lost this.

And the fade-out/fade-in of Mission: Space is a nice touch, as well. I wasn't so sure about it when I first saw it, but once I saw the fade-in at the end matched with that particular audio clip, the whole thing was...well, kind of poignant. Love it, great job.
