@defiantBlaze The game does not have a smooth intro which I largely blame on a bit of a complex and twisted UI, and I disagree that the graphics have anything to do with it - they are easy to learn. More importantly, it's insulting to compare 6 years of dedication to a simple concept, which had been already done prior, that got lucky. As a programmer, I have more respect than I can put into words for Toady, and absolutely none for Notch. The levels of effort made by each are on opposite poles.

It's an init setting.

Go to your DF folder. Go into the data files.

Find your init folder. Inside should be d_init.txt

There should be something in it that says "Show flow amounts"

Change the "NO" to "YES". Without quotes, obviously.

You need to farm underground at first, wait for a caravan of elves or humans and check for a bag of seeds, they usually have overground plants, which is still rather dangerous and pointless really, since dwarves are content eating mushrooms.

@warpigsheals you're not really selecting what dwarves you bring, you're selecting the skills that the dwarves have. make sure you are selecting "prepare for journey carefully" or one of the saved profiles, highlight a dwarf, use the arrow keys to move over the the list on the right and use the plus and minus keys to add or subtract skill points.

Hey, how do i find water (while playing, not while creating the map) when there is no watersource aside from ice and ice lakes? (i know they will turn into water during summer but that was unfortunally not enough...)

Several of my dwarves already died because they couldnt drink water or ale, so

I tried to build a well but that didn't work either (missing mechanic). Also, how do I command dwarves, can I command them directly ? How does the "manager" function work ? Please help a new player :(

@Thambark Dig down. There's guaranteed water in the caves, and thats always drinkable. Just make sure no nasty cave monsters can get in.

@Thambark The way i do it is to make a 3x3x3 room under the Main Gathering hall and then i use a flood gate to fill parts of it and then i make a Channel in the main room and BOM you have a place for a well.

Remember you do not have to fill the entire 3x3x3 Room with water only the lower LVL.

@malibuhiegts Thats normal. That means a cavern underground collapses, which sometimes happen depending on which zone you chose. But then your computer has to process where all the bricks fall and that can be quite big. So give the game like 15 minutes to handle it, and afterwards everything will be fine.

Now, I know that a race being listed means that it is present or has access to the area. To the right of the race listings, there is a column that sometimes has red text in it. I assume 'War' means that race is at war with Dwarves, but what does the absence of text or a dashed red line mean?

@Seldanas - Actually the basics aren't too complicated, it's just a little daunting at the start.  Like, you might have to start over a few times before you get the basic idea of what you're doing. And these tutes will really help you when you're in a bind! You should also check out the Dwarf Fortress wiki and keep it open when you play ;) Once you get a hold of the basics of the game the freedoms and challenges unfold at your fingertips!

Also i prefer the new version now. The underground adds a lot to forts, and guaranteed magma is definitely a plus.
