barry is a good player, but indeed, his intonation isn't always 100%, he blows up some notes here and there, and he's just not completely my style... I know that he made a lot of difference in the world of the French Horn, a lot of pieces were written because of him, etc.. but I prefer Radek :D
I'm learning how to play this on french horn. I just started so it's gonna take a while but I have a pretty good grasp on it already and this helps alot! Tuckwell's amazing! :D Wish me luck playing it
You won't hear a better opening to this concerto live, courageous and full of bravado! I have much admiration for Barry, he has always been true to himself and played the way he feels. Not always appreciated he has never been outdone. Kudos to Thompson, Watkins and Pyatt who all have spectacular techniques and musicianship, but for me Tuckwell has always encapsulated the esprit de corp of the horn fraternity worldwide. Love to buy him a beer! :-)
sometime, in orchestra you should play D with 3, not 12...it depends by the orchestra... and when you have a faster passage you have to play D with 3 , if not you will be late(ritmically) ... and it also depends by the F Horn what are you playing on...
He plays D with T3 because its more in tune than T12. T12 is a sharp fingering, T3 is a little flatter, and the D (concert G) is the 3rd of the E flat major chord so it needs to be flatter.

Can anyone identify the make and model of this horn? I would guess an Alex 103 or a Hans Hoyer Kruspe? Can't see any valve below the main three, but only one above, slightly offset.
Whoever says Barry Tuckwell has a bad sound obviously needs to have their ears checked. It's such a dark tone, and the consistency of airflow in this performance is pretty amazing.
@Roxxee010 His tone isn't gross, its different. You probably play on a Conn or Yamaha or other big horn. This is the sound of a European horn like an Alex or a Shmidt.
One of the greatest players of all time, Tuckwell inspired several generations of horn players in his playing career and continues to do so through his recordings and coaching/conducting. A true genius.
@Wowy4991 dawg, the way Mr. Tuckwell sounds, is the characteristic sound of the horn... More or less. I mean, the different brands are usually either lighter or darker in sound that others.. It just depends on the horn, but IN GENERAL it's all about the player. As the old saying goes, "A man is only as good as his horn playing." Its all up to u man, don't blame the horn.
Eh... it's not centered for sure, but don't discount the difficulty. It IS an octave and the overall tone quality is the same as the one above it. And that's one minor flaw in a live performance...
I agree. I think Barry has a wonderful tone. What is a little flaw in such a wonderful performance. We all can have little mishaps while playing, no matter how good or experienced. He's the best.
Try playing standing up in front of an audience that big and see how your breathing goes. I have had lessons with him and he is such an inspiration and legend.

@happiness1sawarmgun Not a chance. The quality of today's 8D's are crap. The Elkhart models were the best. If you can get your hand on one of those then get one. If you want something similar to a Conn get a Hoyer. They're vastly superior.

At the Houghton horn shop in Ft. Worth, Texas, we've worked on several of Tuckwell's horns. Truly an amazing player.

his horn almost looks like the ones with detachable bells. interesting.

@empresspasta It is haha. I know the look of the ring, which means the bell comes off. Have a model like that myself.

Whatever horn I happen to be playing will be the loudest! Honestly, volume has more to do with the skills of the person playing than the horn itself.

Can some1 tell me which horn sounds most loudly ?
iopzzza 10 months ago
@iopzzza
Loudness typically comes from the horn player and not the horn.
Every person is unique and has a unique horn that he or she plays well with.
