  • @Mousehhh I was being sarcastic, not that you could tell.

  • barry is a good player, but indeed, his intonation isn't always 100%, he blows up some notes here and there, and he's just not completely my style... I know that he made a lot of difference in the world of the French Horn, a lot of pieces were written because of him, etc.. but I prefer Radek :D

  • this solo=lip killer im doing the first part of it for my high school recital

  • playing this on tuba.

  • He might make it...

  • @Jackbryant1997 Did you not know he is a virtuoso on the horn i.e. one of the best horn players alive, he has already made it lol.

  • Ecxelente

  • i loike his mustache =]

  • I'm learning how to play this on french horn. I just started so it's gonna take a while but I have a pretty good grasp on it already and this helps alot! Tuckwell's amazing! :D Wish me luck playing it

  • the orchestra could have been better....

  • Why is Lupe Fiasco's The Show Goes On in the related videos column? No.

  • You won't hear a better opening to this concerto live, courageous and full of bravado! I have much admiration for Barry, he has always been true to himself and played the way he feels. Not always appreciated he has never been outdone. Kudos to Thompson, Watkins and Pyatt who all have spectacular techniques and musicianship, but for me Tuckwell has always encapsulated the esprit de corp of the horn fraternity worldwide. Love to buy him a beer! :-)

  • At the Houghton horn shop in Ft. Worth, Texas, we've worked on several of Tuckwell's horns. Truly an amazing player.

  • his horn almost looks like the ones with detachable bells. interesting.

  • @empresspasta It is haha. I know the look of the ring, which means the bell comes off. Have a model like that myself.

  • total trumpet fail at 2:31, other than that i thought the beginning could be slightly faster....but respect to Barry Tuckwell, Great Performance!

  • sometime, in orchestra you should play D with 3, not 12...it depends by the orchestra... and when you have a faster passage you have to play D with 3 , if not you will be late(ritmically) ... and it also depends by the F Horn what are you playing on...

  • He plays D with T3 because its more in tune than T12. T12 is a sharp fingering, T3 is a little flatter, and the D (concert G) is the 3rd of the E flat major chord so it needs to be flatter.

  • who dislike this is a man who don`t know what means the F Horn!

  • I wonder why he plays the D with T3.

  • Whatever horn I happen to be playing will be the loudest! Honestly, volume has more to do with the skills of the person playing than the horn itself.

  • Can some1 tell me which horn sounds most loudly ?

  • @iopzzza

Loudness typically comes from the horn player and not the horn.

Every person is unique and has a unique horn that he or she plays well with.

  • Can anyone identify the make and model of this horn? I would guess an Alex 103 or a Hans Hoyer Kruspe? Can't see any valve below the main three, but only one above, slightly offset.

  • @oratodasczardas around 2:ish I saw a third under... so I don't know if that helps you distiguish the model any better but yeah.

  • Whoever says Barry Tuckwell has a bad sound obviously needs to have their ears checked. It's such a dark tone, and the consistency of airflow in this performance is pretty amazing.

  • @Roxxee010 His tone isn't gross, its different. You probably play on a Conn or Yamaha or other big horn. This is the sound of a European horn like an Alex or a Shmidt.

  • most likely it's a Holton Tuckwell...

  • @hombar I was just giving some examples, but thank you :)

  • @dmcoulter182 He is playing a Holton

  • @dmcoulter182 He is playing a Holton,

  • Played this on tuba. Very fun piece

  • One of the greatest players of all time, Tuckwell inspired several generations of horn players in his playing career and continues to do so through his recordings and coaching/conducting. A true genius.

  • No comments....Magnifico !!!!

  • get to play this for a solo and ensamble! so exited!

  • The French Horn is one of the most beautiful instruments. It looks good, it sounds, good, it even FEELS good to play... :)

  • YES!

  • YES! I agree completly!

  • Explendido, muito bom, bela apresentação.

  • A real virtuoso!! The best interpretation of the opening phrase I have had the pleasure of hearing!

  • tuckwell is good but the orchestral interpretation is really monotone... probably the conductors fault!

  • I like playing too but its too hard :(

  • I like playing french horn!! =)

  • @xaustinx15 i love it!!!

  • @xaustinx15

    SO DO I!!

  • Fantastic performance by Barry, despite the tempo.

  • Man, I can barely hit high Gs, and Mr. Tuckwell can play high B flats like they're nothing.

  • Barry I love you Come Te Nessuno Al Mondo

  • It's scored that way.

  • ..... extraordinary...... I really like horns.... pity my horn doesn't sound like that!

  • @Wowy4991 dawg, the way Mr. Tuckwell sounds, is the characteristic sound of the horn... More or less. I mean, the different brands are usually either lighter or darker in sound that others.. It just depends on the horn, but IN GENERAL it's all about the player. As the old saying goes, "A man is only as good as his horn playing." Its all up to u man, don't blame the horn.

  • is he flat at the end of the intro in the begining?

  • Eh... it's not centered for sure, but don't discount the difficulty. It IS an octave and the overall tone quality is the same as the one above it. And that's one minor flaw in a live performance...

  • @Othello1019 yeah true, I can hit it pretty good, dennis brain had the same problem to.

  • @Othello1019

I agree. I think Barry has a wonderful tone. What is a little flaw in such a wonderful performance. We all can have little mishaps while playing, no matter how good or experienced. He's the best.

  • @bauerinxyz do u think is it a wonderful tone ? :D he isn't the best :D DEAR GOD

  • @BlackBurnHUN Yes, caus hes playing with the old school.

  • Try playing standing up in front of an audience that big and see how your breathing goes. I have had lessons with him and he is such an inspiration and legend.

  • @ymousguyanon That's how the score was written. It was rumored that Strauss had breathing problems.

  • I'm partial to the con 10D myself.

  • The NHK had an INCREDIBLE wind section at that time...........

  • is this how they play down under ?!?! geeez mannnn...talk about shifting to another gear :(( dont like it

  • You realize Tuckwell is a world class horn player, yeah?

  • @Othello1019 No, Stefan Dohr is the Best :)

  • @MichelTrompista calssifical barry tuckwell the best hermann baumann 2 donato inglese3 dennis brain 4 allessioallegrini radovan valtkovic!!!

  • @MichelTrompista NO, Alessio Allegrini is the best horn player in the world! Dohr is close second =]

  • @shib340 @shib340 classifica best player hornist in the world : barry tuckwell hermann baumann dale clevenger donato inglese radovan valtkovic alessio allegrini simone baroncini luca benucci pasquale pierri (detto lino) e poi buoni rincalzi......

  • Comment removed

  • kindergardener sound ... i like tuckwell but he's plays like a woodcutter :S

  • i agree

  • awesome!

  • Asians are HOTTT!!!!!

  • does anyone know what horn he uses?

  • holton

  • i thought so, but he has more horns. does anyone know which one he prefers? i know i use the horn from school (A holton) and i hate it, now i used an olds brand before for about a year or so and that was the best horn i ever played on. (the school's holton is alot like his)

  • you should get a conn 8D, they are the best for students

  • I cannot agree to that.

Id say Yamaha 668/567 are the best for students.

  • well, what kind of student are we talking about? A high school player who might become professional later, are a student in middle school just getting his first horn?

  • Only 8D's produced before their management change a long time ago. I hate the new ones.

  • @happiness1sawarmgun Not a chance. The quality of today's 8D's are crap. The Elkhart models were the best. If you can get your hand on one of those then get one. If you want something similar to a Conn get a Hoyer. They're vastly superior.

  • @cpthornman

i dont think tuckwell is playing an 8D here..

  • @PROIMZ He's not. He was a Holton person. IIRC someone mentioned the Conn 8D.

  • Simply awesome! What a genius...

  • Barry Tuckwell is a beast

  • barry tuckwell the best!
