  • It turned out really shiny ingame. How do i prevent that?

  • @ludvig1008 by using a custom specular map.

  • Worked for me, thank you!

  • Seems that I solved my problem by installing the 32-bit version on my 64-bit OS.. It works now!

  • thanks, i have 64bit windows7 but i use 32bit Photoshop7 & 32bit plugin worked fine... :)

  • Thanks!

How do you make the specular?

  • Thank you :)

  • Grossartig! Vielen Dank fuer dieses Tutorial! :)

  • noob question : how can i create normal maps to use them for parallax occlusion mapping (3d textures) ? for example in cryengine 3 ?

  • Thanks a bunch BelYo. I had no idea such a filter plug-in existed until I checked the vid description. Until watching this, the only way I could make normal maps was in maya via the tranfer maps method, and I'm rather new to that.

  • short video?!?!?!?!?

  • @12terabyte 6 minutes is long for you? kill yourself, seriously

  • @bezoro2008 Lol, that's funny right there, kudos to you :)

  • Hi, I am using Adobe Photosop cs2, and I keep getting an error with this plugin.

The error is "Could not complete the normalmapfilter command because of a program error"

If anyone knows how to fix this please reply. Thank you!

  • @arabujr just buy photoshop cs5 dude , it really helps !

  • Whats the song in the Begining?

  • thanks

  • plugin is only for Windows though. Should make a better tutorial for both platforms.

  • Thanks a lot...I really appreciate the link to the plug in and the excellent tutorial.

  • LOL As you can see i loaded texture to ANGRY TOURNAMENT.

Thanks for the tutorial you saved me tons of money. No need to buy crazy bump or other texture genarators.

  • LOL As you can see i loaded texture to ANGRY TOURNAMENT

  • Thank you so much, this was totally useful!

  • thanks for texture link.

Do you use any other texture site?

  • great tutorial man, keep up the good work.

  • Thanks for the help. Your English is good too

  • Your english is top notch for me :P

  • m super confused what should be added first ? should we first apply textures/diffuse map or other maps on the model before applying normal map ?

  • Good video

  • thanks :)

  • UDK :) Not unreal tournament thats a game :P

  • Nicht schlecht :) danke, dein Englisch war sehr gut zu verstehen! Großes Lob =D

    Abboniert <3

  • Thanks man

  • Very helpful

  • thank you for making this vid dude

  • thanks BeIYo for this tutorial. I'm going to make goo duse of it. :)

  • The plugin gives me loads of opacity when I do it with the same options as you. Makes me wonder if it works.. :S

  • eeeeeehhhhh......

  • i just cannot find the filter in the photoshop after i installed the thing... is it because i have a ATI card? i heared on other forums that this is not the problem... any suggestions?

  • @91Gamalex do you use a 32 or 64bit OS?

  • @BelYo a 64bit Win7

  • @91Gamalex yeah seems like the filter isnt compatib le to 64bit

  • @BelYo thanks man!

  • @BelYo There seems to be a recent update that allows support for 64-bit now =)

  • @jinmunsuen Awesome! I'm planning to upgrade to 64bit in a couple of months. Really great news!

  • @91Gamalex then you got to personalize de installation, ( C:/ program files (x86)/adobe/photshop cs"X"/plugins, then you run the 32 bits version of photoshop....hope it help to you.

  • You should not blindly create a normal map like this. Stains that in the real world would not have any depth will get depth this way. And if creases are dark and the tiles are light your normal map will look reversed.

What you do is copy your difuse, desaturate it and work that desaturated texture till you feel the bumps are in the right place.

I want to learn how i can further improve my normal map skills thats why i came acros this. Imo, don't make tutorial of things you don't understand.

  • @madmenyo I agree to some extend. This method is better for simple textures like this tile floot as the filter can easily interpret it. For the textures you mentioned your approach is obviously the better one. I should have mentioned that. Oh and I think i know my stuff juuuuust fine.

  • @BelYo

Rule of thumb, never just normal map from a photosource. If you understand how the normal map plugin works you would know that.

Either way, this tutorial shows how to use the plugin but not how to create good normal maps.

If you want to make a good normal map from a brick texture you should copy it and play around with the levels to make good selections of what you want to pop and what not.

  • Thank you Belyo. You've got good tutorials. Is that not possible to have them in German?

  • When in the preview window, you can control the light's position by holding down the CTRL-Key while holding the right mouse button and moving the mouse.

  • deadmau5?

  • @tamere216 uh, what?

  • @BelYo the song in the intro remind me of hey baby from deadmau5

  • Awesome Tutorial m8, Thanks :P

  • Excellent tutorial, and your english was better then you give yourself credit for :)

  • I downloaded the normal map filter and it's even in the photoshop plugins folder. But when I open the program it doesn't show up on the filter menu. I'm using Photoshop CS5 64 bit for windows if it matters.

  • @shikamaru5608 The plugin doesn't exist for 64 bit. Only 32 bit.

  • Yo man, I've downloaded and installed the plug-in but its not showing up in my filters within photoshop, any ideas?

  • @DigitalDilettante I have the same problem... But the plugin is in the plugin folder... don`t works

  • @niklas1723 I figured it out, it doesn't work in 64 bit version, had to load up the normal 32 bit and it works fine.

  • @DigitalDilettante sorry for not answering. had been on board my unit hundreds of miles away from my computer :(. Yeah 64 vs 32 bits often leads to conflicts, nice that you found a solution!

  • @DigitalDilettante Yup, I have a 64bit system but I run the plugin in normal 32bit, works like a charm!

  • Nevermind, you cannot have layers present when generating the map.

  • Comment removed

  • Also pass auf. Ich hab ein riesen Problem mit dem Animate light, die Alpha map muss zu krass sein wenn ich es auf DXT5 abspeicher. Kannst du dazu mal was machen?

  • @Weintraubeheld221

This was exactly my first impression. ^^

But its still interesting... strange, that the GIMP(i hate that prog) plugin seems to work more efficiently than the NVIDIA one. :S

  • you should do voice acting dude :D

    also thanx real helpful

  • 3:10 this normal map may not have enough death :D

  • @veryfuck That's right! it's a frikkin killer normalmap! Don't f*ck with it.

  • If you save a dds and select the normal map settings you can find additional options for normal maps including the much important tangent space option. I don't know why they don't have tangent space option in the normal map generator. It's important for skinned meshes and terrain tilesets that get distorted by height maps.

  • Thanks a lot BeIYo! Really needed this.

  • DO NOT use nvidia plugin it's just and overpraised emboss filter that will give you a crap load of artifacts. ATI standalone normal map maker is much better or if you know how make them manually.

  • @shangynexiii I agree to some extend : the standard output is pretty weak but you can achieve some nice results by using several passes, blur etc. sure its not as powerful as crazy bump or spending a shitload of time creating them by hand or even better, creating a highres 3d mesh and baking the normalmap into a texture. But for simple textures its easy and fast.

  • @BelYo Sure it can be used for a simple texture like concrete, wher the texture itself is pretty grainy. I use ShaderMap pro and man the results are fantastic, you can't tweak the output much but considering the quality of the ending product you rarely feel a need for more tweaks. If you want i think i still have a link to the ...erm..."special" version.

  • with what format do you use to save this document?

  • @mcspank718 well, that depends where you want to use the normal map. Try .tga as it is lossless and quite popular as a texture format. But you can really use any format you like as long as it isn't too compressed (will give you artifacts) and supported by your application.

  • @BelYo k thanks. video is great, helped me a lot!

  • Ah, very cool, I did not know about that plug-in. Thanks for the tips.

  • I could understand you just fine..Oh and great tutorial, I'm using this to make texture mods for the game Just cause 2. Thanks!

  • haha sorry buddy, i was just trying to say something that sounded german

  • @huwgojones ' is cool mate. Unfortunately I simply cant get rid of that stupid accent! It's funny the German accent is the only one that sounds stupid in English. All the others like Spanish, Italian etc. sound way cooler...

  • @BelYo haha german sounds okay... chinese talking english is much worse

  • 'UNDEN SCHLAFFEN!!! xoxoxox

  • @huwgojones huh. you lost me there. I have no idea what that means. I could mean "Unten schlafen" which means to sleep below. Are you referring to your home county or mine? You know, because they are on the opposite side of the planet? ;-)

  • i dot get it, how does this plugin know were to put the height and were to put the depth of your textuture?

  • Well, afaik it is based on the color variation, that is why it sometimes creates wrong bumps and dents. If you experience this, you can draw a black and white image based on your texture and then run the NVidia filter over that.

  • It ranges from black to white... If you have a black canvas and draw white lines on it then you'll see indentations.. The darker you go, the less bumpy it will be.

  • cool thx

  • Big Thanks 500/5*

  • you're welcome :)

  • please put a link with the texture...in the clip.

  • @Zac89nG I updated the description

  • Thanks! Your steps were easy to follow, you've been a great help. :)

  • glad to have helped! :)

  • Well Done Sir. Yes Unreal Engine 3 just always looks good. until you get a guy who is a novice at working with materials and the like (I talking about me here) and then it just doesn't look good at all.

Well that is until today, Been taking materials and textures a lot more seriously now.

well I can't wait to see more tutorials from you. Thank you for the help BTW...
