He has a VERY light voice. I don't see any reason for comparing him with Pavarotti, who had a definitely lyric timbre. IMO Grigolo is more of a lyric eggero tenor. No offense intended (of course it's no offense at all), but I think he should be singing the likes of Ernesto, Nemorino, Lindoro. His timbre is very beautiful and soft and he has good musicality. But, in vocal fach, he's much more similar to a Schipa or Calleja than to Pavarotti or Gedda. But his singing is very good, indeed!
No honey, Juan Diego has a VERY light voice. I don't if you just overdose on Wagnerian tenors all day or what, but he's singing the right repertoire. His voice is healthy, young, and fresh. He's a lyric tenor, and Calleja is lighter than he is. A lyric tenor is not a spinto tenor.
Ops, who said his voice isn't healthy, young and fresh? I meant he has a VERY light voice in comparison to Pavarotti or Kraus. It's definitely not a lyric voice as those tenors had. Just compare Grigolo with some lyric tenors like Gedda, Bergonzi or Villazón. Spinto voices are Corelli's or Martinelli's. If I must make any correction, it's that he's ALSO a lyric tenor, but a LIGHT one. Grigolo's reminds me of Schipa or Valletti: light lyric voices, ideal to Nemorino, Elvino or Fritz, for example.
Grigolo has a warmth that is appropiate for this role. He's a basic lyric tenor, and beyond this repertoire wouldn't be good for him. The roles you listed would be good, besides the high bel canto roles for tenor. It doesn't seem the Grigolo has the comfort in the higher register. Also, Kraus was a light lyric tenor.
oh man how could you make unproportional comparasion.. vittorio an pavarotti??
Pavarotti was a great tenor, obvious no doubt about that, but He need almost almost 20 years before gain fame in opera world since His debut in 68 with joan sutherland, Vittrio si young and still has a long journey to get through.. but His future is bright due to his talent, if you want to compare pavarotti comapre it with nicolai Gedda, He is much more better than pav, sorry Imho
I hate the comparisons but i can only say one think, pavarotti was no the best, he was very good but there were other better tenors like corelli o del monaco o di stefano o kraus etc
Why were Gedda and Corelli better? We don't need comparisons, but Pavarotti had one of the most beautiful male voices in recorded history. Corelli was a shouter, and had horrible nerves. Gedda in his later years wasn't anything fantastic at all. I love all three, but Pavarotti mantained his voice, and grew vocally and artistically as he aged.
That's not the Maestro. But Grigolo admired the Maestro and in my opinion emulates him and that is a wondeful thing. When his matures and gets darker he will be the sound that we worry we will never hear again.
Sorry, I have to DISAGREE that Vittorio "pales in comparison to Pavarotti", or in fact, to many other highly regarded operatic tenors. I loved Pavarotti's voice too, but Vittorio has his own unique and splendid voice and IMHO, can do something that The Pav could NOT do quite as well - sing pop songs (as Vittorio's album demonstrates) in a very NATURAL and sweet voice (non-operatically), equally as good as his operatic singing. Also, he has the "whole package" in other ways as well!
i agree with you, although i have not hear him sing opera live... he really is indeed unique and has a very bright future ahead of him given the proper tools and guidance
Not bad....but NO Pavarotti........too bad we lost him...I am afraid there will not be another like him....the current crop including Grigolo are capable but absolutely PALE in comparison....
Very very good ! (and big technical singing). I think we gonna see him in many more operas.

I appreciate many tenors, and Vittorio is on the very top of my list - he is perfect!

Vittorio's voice is quite close to a nice tenor from the past : Antonio Galiè, who used to sing a lot in Roma.

he is certainly not lyric. i would love to hear him on some rossini, but puccini might be beyond his vocal weight

did you hear calleja in the last two years? It is a much darker and bigger voice now than it was.
A friend of mine sang with grigolo and she appreciated to work with him a lot.... unfortunately I have never attended any performance of grigolo....
