Many people like to criticize Heifetz and say how many others where better, but the only thing they prove by mentioning him in every comment is that his playing is the highest goal any violinist can reach.
I don't think Heifetz was perfect, there are examples of pierces have nicer versions then his, but that doesn't change the fact that he was brilliant.
@wambui37 Normally, I agree, but listen to Menuhin's recording of this piece. His tone is actually a little sweeter than Heifetz's, which is saying a lot!
I agree with you, Heifetz's sound is not so sweet, but just the tone it is which I like with Heifetz so well. If one hears playing him, one knows immediately - this is Heifetz!! - Certainly Menuhin is also a very good violinist and there some are still other (e.g., Hilary Hahn)
Arent we so lucky to listen to this? Beethoven should have listened to this, but unfortunately Beethoven and Heifetz werent contemporaries. Oops....Beethoven also was deaf the greater part of his life. Arent we so lucky to be able to get Beethoven and Heifetz together? This performance is beyond what mankind can produce: its a miracle.
That's a very good point. Oftentimes the performances that we call classic were performed years after the piece was composed. It seems a shame that Beethoven (an a lot of other composers for that matter) never got the chance to hear the seminal performance of this work (whether that's Heifetz or Menuhin, i'm still not sure...)
dabigshow there is a story of a woman telling Heifietz that his violin sounded wonderful at the concert. Heifietz held the violin to his ear and said " thats funny ,I don't hear anything"
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
you know, violin is important, too. part of good playing relies on a good violin. if you tell heifetz to play on a real bad violin, it might even sound worse than a beginner playing on a real good violin.
It most certainly would not happen, give me a stradivarius and surely you will not recognize it. There is another story from a friend of Mr. Heifetz, they used to play quartets and such together and one day Mr. Heifetz smashes his violin and his friends were shocked. They were afraid they would never hear the sound of his Guarnerius again. Basically Heifetz played a $5 violin (back then) like a Guarnerius.
I just analysed its structure in my prog notes. It's rondo form, ABACA coda. Then I just described the characteristics of each section. Knowing what key each section is in could also help, although there's no guarantee you'll get asked about anything for definite. Good luck, it's a hard exam!
yeah im trying 2 find out on how he got influenced into writing this piece but prob is theres not much sources on da net man n btw when ya taking ur exam?
I think this is the greatest performance of this piece of all time. every note is perfectly in tune and played with the utmost sensitivity and tenderness. I'm sure i am exaggerating but every tone from his beautiful violin made the hair stand up on my head.
You are absolutely right, IMHO! One important thing is that here the quality of the sound does justice to Heifetz´s beautiful sound, which certainly deserves your rave comments! KRegards
Yeah, I hear you, I have thought before that Heifetz is just a technically-accomplished robot. But this is wonderful, I am so glad to be a human and be able to listen and appreciate such beautiful music!
Who could hear this and claim the same? Frye, why do you post two different romances (op. 40 and 50), marking them both as "favorite romance"? :) Great piece nevertheless.
When I watch this all I see is a picture of Heifetz holding a violin under his arm whilst smiling! But I can't dispute that he plays this piece with plenty of emotion.
Does anyone else find it slightly distracting that the orchestra play slightly behind him at the beginning? It gets much more together as it progresses though.
The series The Heiftz-Piatgorsky Concerts, available in the days of vinyl, has the most expressive-musical version of the quintet of Cesar Franck. In this recording, you really don´t care about vistuosism...What impressed me was the interpretation...
its not bad. just practice a lot, slowly, and the fast parts won't be too hard. i played this in sixth grade, and by NYSSMA (the state music test in NY) it was really easy xP cuz my fingers just remembered it
the tone/vibrato/interpretation are the things that really set people apart with this piece
This sounds like the 1951 recording with William Steinberg and the RCA Symphony. It and the Romance in F were both recorded at Republic Studios in Hollywood on June 15, 1951.

Yiddish rubbish.
Ruggiero Ricci was better than Stern and Menuhin combined.
Salvatore Accardo is a Paganini specialist and technically, timbrally and bravuri far superior to Itzhak Perlman, Shlomo Milstein etc.

It was Heifietz, not his violin

Of course he did have two of the greatest Strads on Earth. But lets not let that interfere with a good story.

matter which one, it is a beautiful piece, played by the master.
