  • man i wish my neon had a timing chain, or at least my water pump wasn't driven by the timing belt. if any of those two things go your whole car is toast

  • but yea defiantly this vid is timing chain not to hard on that big motor u should feel lucky

  • its possible to bend valves yes if u have a close tolerance motor that why a lot of cars have cut outs on the pistons (wink) valves can be hard but with some ingenuity it can be done "safely" watch out tho them springs are like a loaded gun be careful :D there is a tool to take the keepers off the valve while depressing springs but u CAN do it with a socket and some wrenches and some one to catch the spring in case it shoots thru ur neighbors window or hits ur buddy in the eye LOL

  • timimg chain tensioner make noise click ,but still new or old same thing ,,for sure recall tensioner

  • hahaha! eco tec.

  • @GeorgeC1992 A lot of modern cars do utilize timing chains. The reason all other cars are manufactured with belts is because they're easier to change than a chain, although maintenance might cost you more in the long run because of how often it must be done. Timing chains require more precise manufacturing and engineering of the timing parts, which adds cost to the maker's R&D budget. It all depends on how the manufacturer wants to present the vehicle to the customer or consumer demographics.

  • i have a 3800 series 1 and im currently replacing my chain, well im trying to its my 1st time doing it. And my tensioner has grooves that were from the chain when it got loose it was cutting into it not much but visable also if u see the video response u can see how much slack there is. Any advice would be appreciated ! and Keep up these GM videos n comments! LIKE

  • uno de los mejores motores y caros del mercado

  • I havw an 02 sunbird ans the chain went at 60000. The problem is the OEM oil nozzle that oils the chain, has too small of an opening. They pulled the old ones off shelves,so now everyone stocks the new. I got lucky...only had to replace the head and valves...no piston damage. Sucks that they didnt even issue a technical service bulletin. Also sucks that GM uses plastic guides on a metal chain. No wonder they are going broke. No more GM products for my house...unless its made before the mid 80s.

  • @theindianahoosier im replacing a Toyota timing chain and the guides on it are allso plastic

  • You sir are wrong. The point behind a timing chain is so it never breaks. Hell gm claims on the ecotec the only thing you should change is the fluids.

  • You do realize that the timing chain is one of several items you are supposed to service WAY before 220k miles? This applies to pretty much every vehicle made...ever...

Timing belts will fail even sooner.

  • its a fucking ecotec thats your problem.

  • @sexiigirl14677 Please show me where I said that "belts last longer than metal chains".

  • my gf had a 98 cavalier same setup but a guide broke made some slapping noise messed up idle then boom well sent a couple valves through the head and it was junk........ she had the terrible 2.4 quad

  • Good chain, most likely bad tensioner

  • @dgl1962 if the tensioner is bad then the chains bad

  • @robby844 why?

  • @dgl1962 wow you actually had to ask that?

  • Comment removed

  • @dgl1962 so by what you are saying is that if a car has over 100,000 miles and the tensioner goes out then the chain is perfectly fine? cuz thats what you just said.btw i spent 5 years in the corps as well.but i guess that why so many of the helos i was in almost went down as well.thanks for keeping me safe asshole

  • Comment removed

  • @dgl1962 no asshole they didnt heal themselves the pilot was able to autogyro down.it was only 6 of the helos i was in.and yes dipshit 100k will wear a chain out.just like brakes and tires.my guess is that you think you dont need to change the oil because it never wears or breaks down.and you are stupid to think that belts and chains are the same thing.chains are metal belts are rubber and are forgiving.surely they at least taught you that?

  • @robby844 Sure, you were in 6 different autorotations due to some failure while I logged 350 hrs in hueys in the mid 80's and NEVER had to go through one...

I don't believe that for one second you filthy liar!

The video mentions having 220K miles, not 100K which is highly unlikely to wear a chain out.

My last set of Michelines had 135K (they are rated for a heavier vehicle, ride rough but wear extra long).

  • @dgl1962 wtf are micehlines? you are so retarded.all the vehicles i have worked on that have over 100k need a new timing chain.oh i didnt know you were that old asshole.hahaha you must be what in your 60's.i have a set of bridgestones on my landcruiser that have 140k on them.but thats only cuz they are 10 ply truck tires.your still a retard for comparing a belt and a chain

  • @robby844 I'm 48 numbnuts, by the way, the comparison of belts to chains was to illustrate how tough belts are and that chains are way tougher than that, but I guess that sailed over your pea brain.

You were never in the Marines, you're a pussy liar

  • @dgl1962 really i was never in the marines? and dick wad i would rather take a belt over a chain anyday.so what youre telling all of youtube is that a chain that stretches is better than a belt that doesnt stretch? chains will fail before a belt ever will. motorcycles are proof enough of that.btw everything i drive has gears for timing.so i can really care less.

  • @robby844 :"Chains will fail before a belt ever will"?

You're so stupid that I'm embarassed for you.

Stop sending your barely literate crap.

  • @dgl1962 how is that barely literate? oh wait i forgot you cant read.

  • @robby844 I guess you can't be that bad, I like the train avatar.

I've always loved diesel electric engines.

  • @sunshyne276 Gm made these motors a interference motor. Meaning if the chain breaks 9 times out of 10 you will bend valves. I didn't check my old motor yet but it has 220k mikes on it and started showing signs of getting wore out so I decided it was time. But I was driving at 3300 to 4000 rpm when my chain broke so I bet some valves were bent.

  • You had to replace the motor?

  • On a ecotec as far as I know is the chain tentioner most likely reaches it's limit and can't put more pressure on the chain. The older the chain gets it's going to stretch so once it does that and the tentioner can't press more on the chain it will eventually break.

  • well my 240 sounds like the chain is loose or something so what part is causing the chain to go bad so I dont have to repeat the repair

  • It sounds like a timing chain "click" is about 1/2 the rate of what you would expect to hear from a valve lifter or loose rocker arm or valve. I've got a 4.6 liter Ford V8 with 114,000 miles and it's developed a ticking sound that I can only hear inside the car. I can't hear it listening under the hood. It increases and decreases with engine rpm.

  • i fucking hate chevy timing chains in the cavs there a bitch to get right i rebuilt my z24 and the fucking timing chain was making a whining noise

  • Are there other noises a bad timing chain can make? It cost almost 600 dollars to repair mine. After that, the engine was smooth running. but now it is making a noise again. It's not a tick like this one, its more of a rattle. I will try to get a video of it this weekend when I try to fix my glove box.

  • yeah I guess timing chains stretch. I never woulda thought that.

  • thats a lot of miles

  • im only 16 and i got the car form my stepmoms sister so... i dont know much about cars like its turning but wont start its getting spark and getting fuel so

  • check your timing

  • hey man, be happy it made it to 220k....american shitters usually only last to about 200k lol

  • @coandcaiv

That always depends on how well it's taken care of.

  • neato because my AMERICAN ford ranger still has original engine apart from alternator and its got over 300k miles... i just took good care and made sure oil and shit was changed on time

  • thats nice....dont really care though

  • @coandcaiv

haha your full of shit. my pontiac gran am with the ecotec 2.2 has 435k miles on it and still going. i drive the piss out of if. It all goes to the maintenace. i did proper maintenace. never missed a oil change every 3k miles. use castrol gtx. 5W-30 and well it beats honda civics and last longer so your wrong there buddy.

  • @IsicanA7X

Thats completely wrong. I change my oil ever 5,000 miles. I own a Honda civic. I currently have 162k. The thing with hondas= Timing belt. You need to get it replaced every 100k miles. That's what I did with mine, and if you do replace it, it's 40 bucks as opposed to fishing out the k's

Honda civics are way better than pontiacs, trust me I've got a friend who owns an autoshop, he see's way more pontiacs than civics. He only had one person that was honda, and that was for timingbelt

  • @akaRavenwolf

thats bad on your engine did you know that. it doesnt matter what kind of car it is. if you do late oil changes your allowing sludge to build up and clog your oil passages. they you sieze your engine. and no your wrong. my uncle owns a independent auto repair we see way more import cars than domestic. hondas are not NOT better than pontiacs. may i ask what you have been smoking?? it sounds really good.

  • @IsicanA7X Maybe so but not Honda Civics. The only thing that ever goes wrong with civics is most likely the timing belt. Repair shops have you go in every 3000 because they make more money that way. Believe it or not, that may be what your uncle is trying. Every 5000 still ensures a healthy engine. Also, I check my oil every gas fill when I'm home. You can check if there is sludge if there's a white milky white/brown buildup in the oil tank. It's easy to fine. I'm not wasting money.

  • @akaRavenwolf

I change the oil myself. 5000 miles is pushing to the limits. Every night when you turn you car off condensation occurs in your oil sump. Just like the windows fog up, the oil sump pan does the same. moisture builds up and starts contaminating your oil. if you want to push it to the limits go ahead and change it at 5000 miles. 20$ is not so much unless your poor or something. and you cant check for sludge with the oil dip stick it sticks to your oil pan.

  • i have a 2003 chevy cavalier and the motor was making that noise and yesterday wen i started it to go to work it kept shutting of then it finally went and after work it would turn but wouldnt start my dady and i were working on it today and we think its the timing chain...

  • yeah i know. ah well it had 220,800 miles on her and starting to loose power and stuff so i thought it was time to change it out. i had a motor laying around that i bought a year ago just incase so ah well live and learn....

  • @slocavky we replaced the timing chain and were putting the moter back together.... and were hoping itll start

  • @slocavky mine was balance shaft bearings

  • you that would be your timing chain or balancer shaft chain is loose. could of saved you some money if ya replaced it instead of continuing to drive on it

  • Well we figured out what the noise was! My timing chain snapped on me. But we just finished swapping in a lower mileage ecotec in this weekend and ages back. Thankfully!

  • @slocavky so i take it the ecotec 2.2 is an interference engine?

  • @gmdude91 yes sir it is.... thats why i didnt bother putting a new chain on....

  • @slocavky yeah but i want to repair the chain instead of the whole engine but i only wqaqnt to do it once. therefore i would like to know what part is actually making the chain bad in the first place....help

  • @slocavky If your timing chain snapped then how was it running off the crankshaft?
