Another #1 hit for The Southern Gentleman on the Country & Western charts. It was the 158th #1 C&W song of the Rock Era. On a personal note, I have Sonny James' version of My Love on 45. And something was in the works that would shoot country music into the stratosphere.
Thanks--I like Sonny's version. I sure wish you could/would post more Sonny James. Use the same ole pictures I don't mind. I can scan some of my old LP coverrs and send you too. I am looking for the following songs by Sonny since I have no way of playing my LPs anymore. IAsk Marie, Going through the motions, True Emotions, Heaven on Earth, True Love's a blessing, That's why I love you, Innocent Lies, For Rent, Here comes Honey again, Come on in, That's me without you
I was Sonny James and the Southern Gentlemen in concert at the Astrodome prior to a baseball game. The concert was released on an album and there were some really great selections -- some of his most famous songs. I was a wonderful collection. The Southern Gentlemen really rocked on Rock Island Line. I'd love to hear it again.
First time I ever heard Sonny James do this. This is a Roy Orbison song, Sonny would make him proud. Back in the 50's, I used to go down to WFAA Radio station on Jackson st. in Dallasand watch his radio show . He went to church on edgefield in the Oak Cliff section of Dallas. He could really Play a Guitar, I think his band was the Country Gentlemen, or maybe that was what they called him. the Country Gentleman ,Great song
Grew up listening to Sonny and all the backseat songs that aired during that generation. That style music, a drive in or parked with one you were in love with, that night, will never be again.
What I like is that he has not just copied a true Orbison classic, but he has produced a record that could stand comfortably along side Roy's original.
The reason I prefer this version is #1 because I'm a HUGE Sonny James fan, and #2, he doesn't do that annoying little half-measure that Roy Orbison does that to me just destroys the song.
What I like about Sonny's version is that he does it without copying Roy Orbison's classic recording and his is a very worthy version of a great song.
I really don't know rainpowers. I liked the record very much and it was a country hit for Sonny spending 3 weeks at the number 1 spot. It's different from the Roy Orbison version, but still a very good record.
I had a 45rpm of Sonny James' Running Bear and I believe the "B" side was this song funny how both were big hits of his.

In the last ten years, didn't someone in the pop industry do another cover of this song, a more fast paced version?

SONNY JAMES AN ALL TIME GREAT +++

Sonny is OK on his own but he should have left this one to Roy. He can't even come close to hitting the highs the way Roy does.

Is this the original version that Sonny recorded? As I remember there were no background singers in the original.

how tall was sonny ? seemed very tall when he was on tV
potluck42 3 years ago
I remember reading somewhere that Sonny was 6'4" tall. I saw him at one of his shows in the 70s and I'd say that figure's pretty accurate.
