  • I had a 45rpm of Sonny James' Running Bear and I believe the "B" side was this song funny how both were big hits of his.

  • GOOD ONE WISH I COULD FIND ONE OF GOODBYE MAGGIE GOODBYE

  • Another #1 hit for The Southern Gentleman on the Country & Western charts. It was the 158th #1 C&W song of the Rock Era. On a personal note, I have Sonny James' version of My Love on 45. And something was in the works that would shoot country music into the stratosphere.

  • Oh yes Rock Island Line by Sonny James. a great one. wish I could hear again, too.

  • Thanks--I like Sonny's version. I sure wish you could/would post more Sonny James. Use the same ole pictures I don't mind. I can scan some of my old LP coverrs and send you too. I am looking for the following songs by Sonny since I have no way of playing my LPs anymore. IAsk Marie, Going through the motions, True Emotions, Heaven on Earth, True Love's a blessing, That's why I love you, Innocent Lies, For Rent, Here comes Honey again, Come on in, That's me without you

  • Thanks for posting. I love the old music and sure does bring back some wonderful memories of a much kinder times. Thanks, again.

  • Not only I am listening to Only The Lonely, I can hear The Eagles' New Kids In Town too ... wooohoooo...(I m not on drug!!!!!)

  • He is still great.

  • I never knew that this version existed. It is a very fine version, very romantic. Nice! I like it very much.

  • He puts so much feeling into this version.

  • Wow.. i didn't know about this singer, such a great voice he has..dam

  • I was Sonny James and the Southern Gentlemen in concert at the Astrodome prior to a baseball game. The concert was released on an album and there were some really great selections -- some of his most famous songs. I was a wonderful collection. The Southern Gentlemen really rocked on Rock Island Line. I'd love to hear it again.

  • SONNY JAMES one of the all time great voices of music thanks for all the hits Sonny.

  • Great version!

  • Thanks tarquin,I had not heard this. Please listen to my version and let me know what you think. Dan Dell

  • First time that I have heard this version. Actually, it is quite good. However, once you have heard Roy everything else is a distant 2nd.

  • We have certainly lived in an era that afforded us fine music second to none.

  • Wow this guy realy has a great voice.

  • i admire him for taking a many songs and putting his spin on them.

  • In the last ten years, didn't someone in the pop industry do another cover of this song, a more fast paced version?

  • Ya Roy Orbison and about every body else that thinks they can sing.

  • Is Sonny James still alive? I always thought he had a great voice

  • @jadegreenkaty He was alive last year in May, celebrating his 80th birthday in Hackleburg, Alabama.

  • SONNY JAMES AN ALL TIME GREAT +++

  • Sonny is OK on his own but he should have left this one to Roy. He can't even come close to hitting the highs the way Roy does.

  • 0h ! sorry I didn't know this cover of a great song.

i'ts wonderful to listen this cool version !

    thanks ! *****

  • I had forgotten what I had called his band, but you are right, If I think of more , I'll leave you another note. Thanks for your reply=Hoyt

  • First time I ever heard Sonny James do this. This is a Roy Orbison song, Sonny would make him proud. Back in the 50's, I used to go down to WFAA Radio station on Jackson st. in Dallasand watch his radio show . He went to church on edgefield in the Oak Cliff section of Dallas. He could really Play a Guitar, I think his band was the Country Gentlemen, or maybe that was what they called him. the Country Gentleman ,Great song

  • I believe his band were called the Southern Gentlemen. Interesting comment olwhistler.

  • Is this the original version that Sonny recorded? As I remember there were no background singers in the original.

  • Grew up listening to Sonny and all the backseat songs that aired during that generation. That style music, a drive in or parked with one you were in love with, that night, will never be again.

  • What I like is that he has not just copied a true Orbison classic, but he has produced a record that could stand comfortably along side Roy's original.

  • He made it his own..

  • Gr eat song from a great entertainer..thanks

  • Never heard this version. it's lovely!

  • how tall was sonny ? seemed very tall when he was on tV

  • I remember reading somewhere that Sonny was 6'4" tall. I saw him at one of his shows in the 70s and I'd say that figure's pretty accurate.

  • Very pretty!Thank you tarquin45 for posting .

    5*****s and thank you J.T. for sending.Shirley

  • The reason I prefer this version is #1 because I'm a HUGE Sonny James fan, and #2, he doesn't do that annoying little half-measure that Roy Orbison does that to me just destroys the song.

  • good rendition ...but...he just isn't Roy Orbison... need i say more

  • He's better

  • Wonderful performer and a great song .

  • awesome music, brings back fond memories thank you for putting it on

  • I could put more of Sonny's music on, but there doesn't seem to be a whole lot of photos on Google.

  • @tarquin45 please put on anything you have of his! Sonny James (James Loden) is my distant (3rd) cousin.

  • I love Sonny James!! It's hard to find a lot of his songs on YouTube!! This is a great song sung by Roy and Sonny.

  • Never heard this version, but an excellent one. Thanks for posting.

  • What I like about Sonny's version is that he does it without copying Roy Orbison's classic recording and his is a very worthy version of a great song.

  • Only did know this one from Roy Orbison...

  • I really don't know rainpowers. I liked the record very much and it was a country hit for Sonny spending 3 weeks at the number 1 spot. It's different from the Roy Orbison version, but still a very good record.
