real riders ,tomac was magic and still is there bike handling was second to none , ned overend could stomp most even in a down hill today with smooth flowing riding ,
also back then, most people rode with their seats real high. USed to squeeze them between your thighs and lean back a little bit. Really gave you amazing control. It's kind of how you had to ride downhill so that the rear of the bike would have more weight on it so it wouldn't just bounce around everywhere.
This is when I got into MTB. I stil ride a Fat Chance Yo Eddy. I remember when the first Rock Shox came out and how amazing that was that we had shocks for bikes!!!! I never did get into the full suspension thing. Give me an old steel frame any day over these new bikes.
I raced the Cross Country event that year. I placed 50th out of 350. It was brutal and raining. Amazing. I miss the olden days. No dh bikes then. CC bikes down the hill haha
They didnt show how he jumped the entire bridge on that course that year...he jumped out of camera view that year while winning it all. Cully was amazing. That was the beginning of my love affair with the sport.
What, nothing more than riding a motorbike without an engine?? What sort of comment is that dickhead!! Progression it is called, like to see them do a 15 foot drop at speed on those old bikes. Much respect them, but not you an your comment knob!

Progression??? 15 foot drops???
The name of the sport is DOWNHILL, not "high jump drops" or anything like that.
Anyway, if you´re stupid enough to pay the price to ride a "motorless motorbike" when a real dirt motorbike is a lot cheaper, go for it! It´s your money and you should spend it the way you want.

That was real downhill, on real mountain bikes.
Downhill today is nothing more than riding off-road motorcycles without an engine.
Remember when Gary Fisher put touring triple cranksets on the first klunkers in the end of the 70´s, with one purpose: pedal up the hills, because bikes are made to be ridden, not pushed.
yeah the bikes weren't entirely suited for downhill, but imagine the skill required to ride them. there's one guy riding a fully rigid bike who died around 1992 n he was like one of the best. altho i must say it a bit silly to ride with the saddle riiight up lol
The thing that sucks about this clip as just as it aired on ESPN...they didn't show Dave Cullinan FLYING over the bridge on that course...he threw a monster table top over that bridge for the win.
even cooler was that the chair lift was super close the the bridge so Cully had to time it so when he gabbed over the bridge he did run into the chair lift.
Aparently he pulled a huge table when he did it was well. Dude had style out his ass.
Yeah, he and toby henderson were of the same philosophy...do it big or don't do it...I IDOLIZED that guy when he was racing. I met him once at interbike...kind of a dick but fuck it. Leigh Donovan was there that year too and she was wearing a short skirt... :)
v-brakes weren't even out as prototypes until 1995. . . regular cantilever brakes with ceramic coated rims were hi-tech in '92. Jimmy Deaton's bike had about 2" of travel and i believe tomac still had his hardtail.
actually that looks like a verlicchi or an iron horse full suspension that cullinan was riding.
jonnyweston 1 month ago
@jonnyweston Verlicci and iron horse were the same company at that point iirc.. 1.2 inches of travel if i remember.

Just shows that modern bike racing is all about holding on and letting the sus and discs do the work and much less about technical riding skill

This track is completely flat.. don't need no suspension and could even ride it brakeless
