The way I interpret it, in the very end when he says "God is everything" he is stating in a way, the transcendentalist belief that a sort of divine presence can be found throughout all the earth. I think some think he saying though that if everyone is saying god is this and god is that then god is all of those things and must not exist. I don't know Voltaire's religious beliefs, but I know this song is musically and philosophically phenomenal, as is Voltaire.

It's not about how God isn't real and religion is evil, or anything like that. It's about how people shouldn't use God or religion as an excuse to support their own prejudices and bigotries. If you listen carefully he never sings that religion is wrong or that religious people are bad, he just dismisses the bad things people do in the name of religion.
