@daschus lol true but where do we all really originate from ? i guess there is just one source thats developed like a musical fugue we are all variations on a theme the human race is a living fugue just as all nature is a living fugue you can see this in the structure of a tree or in dna both bach in western music and indian classical both show this fugue like nature because nature is their teacher this understanding has allowed my soul to embrace the whole of human culture with ease and joy
yes, you are listening to it wrong if you're droning on about droning on tonics. It's like reading Shakespeare and then boring everybody with alternate theories of grammar.
If you can judge a people by their music, Indians rank among the best! I am a Euro-American and a big fan of Indian art. They are great musicans, dancers and film makers. I do however prefer Italian food any day! (HAHAHAHAH)
@glassbreaker5791: The tambura is usually tuned to two different droning notes. Typically it will be the tonic and the dominant, but it can also be the tonic and the subdominant, or the tonic and the leading note.
theory question (though i know the theory of this music isn't related to western theory, it can be compared): it sounds as though the tambura is droning on the dominant rather than the tonic. i was under the impression that it usually drones on the tonic. am i hearing this wrong or is this just a special case?
@glassbreaker5791 Hey! I'm not sure what instrument you play or how well versed you are in music theory but here's my uninformed response to you. ;) The drone note in this song is a D natural. I'm not an expert in Indian music or its relevant theory, but it is important to keep in mind that Indian music is comprised of not only the various notes of the chromatic scale but also the various microtones of each note. That said, many Indian melodies have a lot in common with the Phrygian mode.
@glassbreaker5791 You might try the following scale which is an altered E phrygian dominant scale. E F Gb G A Bb Db E. It is basically the phrygian dom. scale with an augmented 7th (sharped 7th). Although this isn't a perfect example of Indian scales or the music in general, you'll find that if you play that scale over this song (or over other classical Indian songs with the scale adjusted for the song's key) you'll get that exotic Indian sound; the scale fits nicely with the music!
@TheRol3n whoops! I totally had 2 scales in mind when i wrote that! The correct scale (or at least the one i had in mind) is D Eb Gb G A Bb Db E. sorry for the mixup. :)
@TheRol3n Ok... so now I have fully accepted the fact that many of you will make fun of me for making a similar mistake twice. LOL. For better or worse: D Eb Gb G A Bb Db D. (I quadruple-checked it this time, I promise it's right!)
I hate these bekardar dhorias. Appreciate the music to yourself. NO one cares what you have to say, and your sarcasm is not funny, no one smiles back at you.
Mann du hast keine Ahnung, was Sitar ist! Guitar is much smaller version of Sitar. Seems to be ur poor knowledge. Sitar has traditionally 18 to 21 strings. In exceptional case it can have more.....
What is that instrument she is playing, and how is it played, that it is not strummed or plucked??? I would like to know what it's called so I can look up more about it... Thanks for posting this!
